Here the stress and deformation induced in an I-beam are computed when the beam experiences an inelastic collision of soft material. This computation is completed using equivalent spring constant and equivalent mass estimations in a single degree-of-freedom model. The formula for equivalent mass of a cantilevered beam is derived using an equivalent energy approach. The contact force between the soft material and the beam is estimated at maximum beam deflection.

Dear sir, thank you very much for the lesson, I am a mechanical engineering student, I wanted to ask you if this simplification is valid for the case that instead of soil a ball is used, which has enough energy to deflect the cantilever beam enough to pass downwards, but considering that it does not deform plastically.

Sir, you are really great. May I have your Linked-in ID to have a discussion about more detailed topics? I have an issue about finding acting loads on a shaft in the real world. I mean suppose that you have a centrifugal pump in front of you and you want to design its shaft, now the question is that, how would you know what is the load magnitude applied by the impeller and other components? because as far as you know in most engineering books the author has been given you some knowns and ask you to find unknowns, but in the real world condition there are no knowns how can I find forces and design an engineering problem? thanks in advance for your kind notice dear.

Thanks for the compliments! Here is my linked-in profile: www.linkedin.com/in/mswanbom/ I apologize if I'm a little unresponsive, I'm pretty buried with work right now. But I'll try to help if I can here and there!
