More low IQ Hollywood 'go woke, go broke' comes up with. What they don't understand is that James Bond is supposed to be debonair, a rough diamond, somewhat brazen, an adventurer and, yes, an expert seducer. Since such hollyweirdos only have a vocabulary of about 4 adjectives, it is hardly surprising that this has been labelled 'sexist' 'not current' etc, but let me explain why this is predictable drivel 1) It is merely a fact that some spies, past and present, male and female were adventurers, had to be brazen and were expert seducers. This was in order to gain information, set honeytraps and so on. 2)There is nothing immature about a man being a rogue loner with wry wit. There is nothing inherently sexist about a man seducing a woman, or multiple women in the context of the story or generally, depending on context. We live in an era where women quite casually gloat about having 10 boyfriends who believe they are wild ass kickers. Should there be a show where women go around conquering in some manner, for example? There already have been many shows of such nature. Context is everything. 3) If Bond is just a guy who goes around punching people then talking about War and Peace with his granny, or having a cup of hot milk before bed we are in a different film all together. That film might be good, or it might be horrible. It might look like a crude and lacklustre version of Jason Bourne. Most people who support a woke Bond wouldn't understand an intellectual film either. Why not keep tastes separate so you can appreciate each one? 4) Audiences are smart enough to know what fiction is. No human can fend off 200 henchmen weilding machine guns with an ankle pistol, anyway. They can certainly build themselves to be formidable warriors, but they can't do that. Therefore, you might as well accept that these are archetypes. They have some basis in reality but take the audience into a sense of extraordinary. 5)Not everyone lives a boring life. Yes most woke people live with their moms till 50. However there, amazingly enough, really still exists people who know that having 50 genders will not make you interesting, impressive, worldly nor will it give you stories to tell your grandkids. Some people really do travel the world, drink exotic drinks, meet many unique people and, yes, do many more of the things Bond does. There are even people who have a 'settled' life, who still exist within a paridigm of adventure and actually achieve things. So there we have it. Although you will not want to hear this final, slightly conspiritoral point. There will always be someone who benefits from humans being bland, dull, weak and dumb. You may think it can't be so, but history proves otherwise. By following the woke hollyweird films and giving them your money, you support this dilution of culture into something akin to dishwater mixed in with days old sink froth. Luckily most people don't watch woke Hollyweird films and seek out the good ones. Just requires these barely conscious film producers to figure this out.

I guess I'm old-school in this, but I'd love to see a Pierce Brosnan kinda type who enjoys the job, travels the world and gets the girl. Modernized in Hollywood terms means - more emotional, more vulnerable and I'm less sure that's the road we should take the franchise. They've done that with Daniel Craig to an extreme degree, something different would be welcomed if you ask me. I'd also love to see a return of high-tech gadgets which was always a huge differentiator between Bond and all other spy/agent movies.

Brilliant answer. Although some of the character's behavior has been adjusted slightly through the decades. The essence is still the same. Part of the appeal is the contrast between Bond's outward appearance; suave, longe lizard, debonair and what he does; a government assassin with licence to kill. You try to change that core idea and you destabilize the recipe. It's no longer James Bond. Which more of less solves the answer to "should James Bond be modernized?" The correct answer is indeed "why?".

If you modernize Bond and the setting, you get yet another superhero movie. If you modernize one or the other, the whole thing starts to resemble Austin Powers. I think the most interesting option is to go back to the 50s and 60s, if not remaking Fleming's stories then new "historical fiction" Bond adventures with a personality somewhere between Dalton and Craig
@jamesatkinsonja2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the 60's be more 'Austin Powers' especially if it was light hearted? Daniel Craig said in 2012 that going more serious and modernising was partly a reaction to Powers mockery of Bond tropes [saying bluntly 'Mike Myers F-Ked us']. I can't see a 50/'60's setting really being viable due to losing product placement/increased costs etc. I think other media [such as the novels] is where you can do that setting with original stories [like many of the recent books].

Barbara Broccoli has ALWAYS been uncomfortable with who James Bond is and has sought to tailor the character to her own personal satisfaction. When called out on her declaration that Bond's treatment of women would reflect the Me-Too era, she said that "Bond needs to evolve." I don't think she's in touch with the fanbase at all. She's jacked up on her ego and from her recent statement in Variety, she'll be doubling down on "evolving" Bond. I believe that the next era of Bond will be the last and it will be a short one.

No need to modernize something that’s timeless. Bond was modern in the 50’s when Fleming introduced him to the world. He was modern in the 60s when he made his cinema debut. He was modern in the 90s with the video game reaching new fans. He was modern in 06 when the series was rebooted. 007 is timeless! The superfluous elements should evolve but the core components should never change! Just listen to her telling Bond her backstory. She's a woman who can stand up for herself, which she symbolically does when she stands up in the boat at the end of the film. She is a very tough and independent character. And whether the character is a Bond ally or not, strong women have always been apart of the Bond films.

Spot on answers to a present day line of questioning. Something to consider is Ms. Broccoli's half brother, Michael G. Wilson, is also part of the mix. I'm sure he will have significant influence as to the direction of the franchise. If they go woke, they'll only be pandering to people who do not care about the origin and story of the movies. I'm hopeful Ms. Broccoli and Mr. Wilson will be a good balance for the future of 007 and come to the realization what the vast majority of Bond fans want to see. That is, keep Bond the character Ian Fleming and Albert "Cubby" Broccoli worked so hard to create. Therefore, Broccoli and Wilson's storyline decisions based off of Fleming's books are warranted. I do like the idea as some other commenters have mentioned to stress impressive high-tech gadgets and vehicles as well as punchy, memorable one liners.

Throughout the Craig era, James Bond has been deconstructed, riddled with bullets, filled with deadly nano bots, and finally blown to bits. The desire to "modernize" Bond makes little sense because the character has already been "modernized" out of existence.
@calebfuller47132 жыл бұрын
No, in fact, let's go back and make it a period piece, set in the 1950/60s cold war era of the original books. And seeing as Craig's Bond is dead, and we're onto a second reboot, we can go back to the original novels and remake them (preferably in a more faithful way).
@stevemeyer47652 жыл бұрын
James Bond has already been modernized. The differences between Craig and Connery are massive. They’re basically not even the same character. However, there is a way to do this respectfully while still retaining Bond’s main character traits. Henry Cavill is a 1 in a trillion perfect fit for the role. If they don’t use him they are squandering an opportunity that may never again come along.

I think you can change some elements of the character, but not the core elements that make up who he is, that would fundamentally change the character into someone else completely and thus having to fundamentally change the overall story. You can change hair color for instance, accent or even race. Ultimately that doesn't change anything or radically change the character or the story. But imo some of his core elements are he is British, he is a spy for MI6, he is a person of action who can handle himself, and is a very masculine character. He is arguably the most famous symbol of masculinity in pop culture. Imo to change that would alter a core trait of the character that would alter who fundamentally that person is and thus story and also have to change aspects of all the other characters around them. Would like to see more women and personalities that are spies for MI6. Like the ones in the book Double or Nothing.

Given the recent 'DC' news with Cavil I think he can be taken out of the running given he's going to be tied up with another franchise for a while and hence can't do that and Bond [Daniel Craig turned down Thor for this reason]. Nolan is certainly more plausible [given he's worked in franchises before] but given he usually produces himself I'm still a bit doubtful but wouldn't rule it out after he's done with Oppenheimer. The fascination with changing Bond comes from people who do not watch the movies to begin with. James Bond is an established character, love him or hate him, Fleming has given us the biography for the character. Hopefully the producers never bow the knee to outsider influence who know nothing about the character of James Bond. If a group wants to make a movie about a spy that checks all the "modern" boxes then I say, have at it. But leave Bond alone.

I agree with you David. Everything you said makes sense. One of the reasons the Bond franchise has endured I believe is because it has kept up with the times. Modernized so to speak. That doesn’t mean Bond himself needs to change that much. Even as a woman, I also think Bond should never be female. That is not the character Fleming created. He is a cold blooded assassin who loves the ladies, too much booze and well prepared eggs. I just really hope the producers go back to making movies that are fun. I just rewatched all 4 Brosnan films (yes, even DAD) and even with the horrible dialogue and stupid plot in DAD I had a great time. I didn’t come away feeling depressed. I also just recently rewatched all of the Connery films (except the atrocious DAF) and those were so much fun too. Connery was top notch in his first four but I think Pierce will always hold a special place in my heart since he is the Bond I grew up with (first saw in theater). Casino Royale is also my favorite movie and I love the Thunderball theme too. My very favorite theme would be between “You Know My Name” or “The World Is Not Enough” though. Also really like the Skyfall and Live and Let Die themes. Oh and besides the theme song and Connery, Luciana Paluzzi and Claudine Auger are the best parts of Thunderball. I think Fiona Volpe is one of the very best henchmen (well, henchwoman in her case) in the entire franchise.

A key part of Bond is being modern- Every Bond has brought about modern fashion, flashy cars, futuristic technology, and going to more exotic locations with better representation of race, gender and culture.

I think your should try to write a script for bond. I would like to encourage you to try to get a foot in the door with that! Our beloved franchise might be in good hands then. Agreeing btw 100% the points your making there.. keep up the good work!

9:06 You suggest that Bond has had the world 'modernize' around him, but your insinuation seems to be that he's stayed the same. I'd argue that Bond has modernized as well though. He's no longer blatantly and uncomfortably sexist, he no longer smokes, he no longer hits women for the fun of it, he's tolerant of gay people, etc etc. Bond has evolved and modernized to represent a modern gentleman - as he should. But for some reason, people (and do 'people' actually think this? I've never heard anyone outside of Twitter actually think this is a good idea) think that 'modernizing' means 'switching gender', which totally ignores the fact that Bond as a character HAS modernized, and always has.

David makes a brilliant observation about Bond. There's a great history of Anti-Hero's, that are not Angels. Characters shouldn't be who we should be. We watch films for Lord Byron, because we don't want to be him. Bond is a professional spy, he does duplicitous things to save the day. Love it and be thankful it's not your life.

The question/statement from Lucy of "Phoebe Waller Bridge gave lines that are more empowering to women" is almost insulting. It dismisses the decades of wonderful, powerful, strong female characters. Camille, Vesper, Jinx, Elektra, Wai Lin, Natalya, Pam Bouvier, Octopussy, Melina, XXX, Judi Dench's M - all wonderful strong empowered women. To dismiss them shows right off the bat that someone doesn't know what they're talking about.

Walter Bridge's contribution was a butch feminist character only there to put Bond in his place Butch women don't belongs in the Bond franchise

The last two have been awful- Just write a script as follows- Pre title sequence which has little or no connection to what follows. Banger of a title song Bond is given a mission pamphlet. Bond visits Q for a gadget/car. Off he goes to an exotic location for a lead. Gorgeous girl/car chase/mission unfolds Crash bang, a few moments of peril with no personal backstory. Kill the villain/bang the girl. Banger of a title song reappears/James Bond Will Return and The End. IT'S REALLY THAT SIMPLE . .

Couldn’t say it in any better way my self you handled it very well and gave a great answer and the (why) exactly what we all think I mean if people want to see a female spy movie maybe they should make a new movie for that and it’s not like it’s never been done before (Alice) was a great tv serious Among a lot more, so we already have that so why come after bond 🤷🏻♂️

My dad was a big bond fan, naturally watching the films with my dad I to become a big fan of Bond. All in all I am huge fan of the spy thriller shows, but Bond is my all time favorite. As a black man I can watch Bond and say that is cool, I admire this character. Often times I would imagine myself as Bond in sleek suit, with my very own Aston Martin.The first time I got a tailored suit, as soon as I got home I had some bond music on, while wearing it the whole day lol My entire wardrobe is pretty much suits and polo's and I don't have a Aston Martin yet but hey I'm still alive and able to work towards it. He doesn't need to be modernized at all he is loved all around the world by various and diff. types of people! I am not a fan of the notion that a character has to be gender or race swapped to inspire or relate to the character. It competely ignores history of film and iconic people throughout time. Who have proven this not the case. Very rarely do we see new original characters of diversity. So to me it sounds like slickk talk from most of the hollywood types. Gives me the vibes of people at a party and everyone wants to appear good so they say certain things but the actions they take don't reflect what they say. At the end day any kind of race/gender swaps is just flat lazy and shows low effort and lack of creativity and risk taking.

12:37 I don't even think you need to say "for the time". Wai Lin was a more empowered character than anything we got in the Craig Era. She wasn't just empowered for 1997, she was empowered full stop.
