Here's my take as an ancient guy who started reading the books before the Dr No came out in the theaters: James Bond wore a Rolex Explorer, no question. I was a little shocked in the films when he was wearing Submariners but I came around however that little Explorer stayed stuck in my mind. Many years later, after many Bond movies and many Bonds, many watches, I finally got to the point in life where I could afford luxury watches. What did I choose? A pre-owned Rolex Explorer circa 2001. This was at about the point where new Rolexes became unattainable and also where Daniel Craig proved himself a worthy Bond. I didn't like what Rolex the company had become. I started looking at Omegas. Fortunately as a US Military veteran I could shop at the online Military Exchange. They wore having periodic sales on Omegas with huge discounts. I purchased both a Seamaster professional 300 and a Planet Ocean. I love all three of my "Bond" watches. They connect my whole Bond experience from the early books to the latest films.

Hey David, I believe you’re overlooking that the first gadget watch worn by James Bond was a Breitling Top Time in the 1965 film Thunderball, which featured a built-in Geiger counter to detect radiation. This unique timepiece was specially modified by the film’s art department and was the only one produced for the movie. Interestingly, after filming, the watch disappeared and resurfaced decades later at a car boot sale in England, where it was purchased for £25. It was later auctioned by Christie’s in 2013, fetching over £100,000.

If you really want a Rolex to connect to Bond then buying a new one makes no sense. Go vintage and you can avoid all the pretentiousness and condescension of the official Rolex boutique. I even went into the Omega store at the King of Prussia Mall, with no ambitions of buying a watch and was honest to sales clerk and I still couldn't have been treated better. The salesman showed me several watches and even brought out the Seamaster Planet Ocean 6000M Ultra Deep, because I told him I was a scuba diver. We had a great conversation and left feeling like I almost made a friend. So you're not kidding about the amazing customer experience when it comes to Omega.

I’ve got a couple thoughts on it. 1. I think people generally identify with the Bond watch they first saw. The first Bond I saw in the theater was Brosnin, so Omega 300m is my go to. 2. With Rolex’s current image, a real spy wouldn’t wear them. They’d probably wear a g shock or something. 3. The British navy, which Bond is a commander of, issued Omega seamasters to its officers in the 1960s.

Another thing to note is that Omega becoming a sponsor of the Bond franchise saved Omega and perhaps Swatch as a whole from demise. This saved a huge segment of the watch industry. ETA (Swatch owned), supplies movements to so many brands.

Enjoyable way to start my Saturday. Right on time if I may quip too. Being about the “experience” I knew you would pick Omega because of what I heard about customer experience on the two brands outside of your channel. My one time venturing into an Omega store was a nice experience for myself too. I enjoyed all of this video. As most Bond fans we all noticed the Live and Let Die Rolex. It’s one of our favs. My personal fave watch is the No Time To Die Omega. Totally enjoyed this video. I didn’t know your fav actor who played Bond until this video…. Great reveal! I think the Omega vs Rolex debate for James Bond comes down to when you were introduced to the character and what resonates with you personally. For me, I first saw GoldenEye around 2001 when I was 8 years old. Pierce Brosnan was my first Bond, and the blue Omega Seamaster was the Bond watch in my eyes. Later, seeing Daniel Craig wear the updated Seamaster Co-Axial in Casino Royale only solidified that connection. Now, I completely understand why people are drawn to Rolex. Ian Fleming wrote Bond wearing a Rolex, and in the 50s and 60s, Rolex was a natural choice for Bond a rugged, reliable tool watch that fit the character perfectly. The Submariner in Dr. No is iconic and represents the early essence of Bond. That said, I think Omega’s partnership, starting in the 90s with GoldenEye, made perfect sense for the time. Yes, Omega is a paid sponsor of the Bond franchise, but that’s not unique, so are Tom Ford, Crockett & Jones, and many other brands associated with Bond’s wardrobe. The fact that Omega stepped into this role and managed to integrate its watches into the character’s persona without feeling forced speaks volumes about the brand. Bond is a character that has to evolve with the times while still staying true to his roots. Omega strikes a perfect balance between innovation and heritage. The Seamaster, especially the 90s version with its blue wave-patterned dial, felt like a nod to Bond’s Royal Navy background while bringing something fresh to his style. It’s a small detail, but the waves on the dial felt symbolic of Bond’s connection to the sea, his naval history, and his overall adventurous persona. Combined with Omega’s more modern bracelet design and contemporary styling, the Seamaster brought Bond into the 90s and beyond without losing that classic, refined feel. It was a natural evolution that respected the “recipe” of Bond’s character: stylish, functional, and sophisticated, but never over the top or impractical. Rolex has heritage, no doubt about it, but Omega does too. The brand’s long-standing connection with exploration and precision (think of the Moonwatch, for example) aligns perfectly with Bond’s adventurous and resourceful nature. And while Rolex is iconic, Omega offers a level of accessibility and attainability that feels more in line with what Bond would realistically wear. For me, Omega isn’t just a sponsor it’s a watch brand that fits Bond’s character in the modern era. While Rolex is part of the franchise’s history, Omega represents the Bond that I grew up with and the era that resonates with me most. It keeps Bond stylish and contemporary while still honoring the character’s timeless essence. At the end of the day, I think it depends on which Bond you grew up with and how you connect to the character. For the classic fans, Rolex will always be king. But for me and many others: ”Rolex?” ”-Omega.”

I now have a one watch collection consisting of the current model No Date Sub. All of these watches allow me to add a Bondian flair to my daily grind. With that said, I couldn’t be happier with my current state as the Sub allows me to channel Dalton (fave), Connery and Moore with only a single piece. Helps me to connect with the Fleming Books better too as I read them. PS: still hoping to add a pristine condition 2220 SMP300m (Casino Royale) to my collection in the future.

Exactly, Flemming wore a Rolex Explorer 1, therefore it's the penultimate Bond watch. The, "platonic ideal of a sports watch" Explorer 1 also happens to be the perfect "GADA" watch for a character who goes from adventure to a tuxedo in Monte Carlo. Which is not at all critical of the Omega watches which have been featured as Bond watches, as those are certainly all beautiful and great watches in their own right as well.

The Rolex of the 50s and 60s is not the Rolex of today. A man of Bonds means may have a vintage Rolex, passed down from Dad, but even with supplementing his income with gambling would struggle to purchase a new one in the 21st century. Omega, in many but not all, ways fills the market gap that Rolex dominated in the 50s. If only choosing between the two, due to pubic service income and a distain for the snobbishness of the average Rolex dealership, the Bond of today would buy a Omega.

Well Sean Connery's Submariner reference 6538, in Dr.No ,its the most iconic watch in bond movies. It's speculated that the watch was actually the personal timepiece of producer Albert Broccoli, who lent it to Connery when they filmed Dr. No. Nothing beats the Rolex submariner slim case. Rolex submariner with maxi case, it's too big. Make it small and classy.

I also thought it’d be the one Seiko 5 Ian Fleming would’ve given a thumbs up to. 😂

You hit it on the head David! Bond chose Rolex and that’s how it all started … BUT it honestly seems as Rolex somewhere along the line became too cool for Bond and Bond fans. They don’t see the benefit of embracing the Bond Lifestyle! Their customer non-service is solid proof of it! Omega was wise and grabbed the market and RAN with it! Brilliant! Did Rolex ever make ANYTHING with any Bond references? Honestly I haven’t been into fine timepieces long enough to know so I’m honestly just asking, but we see how Omega has taken to heart and recognizes Bond fans and how immense the fan base is! So why would we want to fork over our money to a company who honestly could care less! When I do get ready and go for a Rolex be sure it’ll be a vintage one that harkens back to Roger Moore and Connery! But for now I love the pieces Omega has been putting out! Especially the back of the 60th with the gun barrel scene! GENIUS! Just my two cents worth… great video David!!! Always enjoy your takes!

Having said that, I just acquired the Goldeneye 2541. Despite it being a quartz watch, I’m absolutely in love. I love it even more than my old 2531. In the espionage trade, a watch does one thing - it keeps time. And being on time can be a life and death issue. Fleming understood this and decided Rolex was the right answer for his character. Truthfully, in the 1950s Rolex and Omega both created “working man’s watches” that you could buy for less than a month’s pay. Specialized units of the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Commandos were issued Rolex Submariners. Royal Air Force pilots were often issued Omegas (among other quality Swiss watches). That has changed today. CWC and other British manufacturers like Elliot Brown are the issued watches for special operations and G-shocks are ubiquitous “down range.” Rolex and Omega divers keep terrific time, but they are now luxury timepieces. Luxury is part of both the literary Bond and the cinema Bond so either would fit into the story. The short answer (too late, JR) is that it doesn’t matter. Both are superior timepieces and I can imagine Bond saving up £ after some dangerous TDY and buying either of these luxury watches. Sorry, no controversy on my part. BTW, I don’t own either brand. Cheers, JR Seeger Old warrior, even older novelist

Flemming choose a Bently as the characters car. That doesn't work so well now. Later on, this was switched to Aston Martin. This is the Bond car. Goes to show you can have evolution that improves the character. However, undecided I own both a neo vintage submariner as worn in the movies, and the NTTD. I can kill assassins wearing either. Most likely the Exploreror Omega Aqua Terra are better fits for the role. Working for UK, with our investment in military, most likely Bond would have been issued a Timex Snoopy watch. On the watch front, if you own either an Omega or Rolex, you own a beautiful watch.

Omega isn’t out of place on Bond’s wrist, but from my perspective, Rolex makes the most sense. Rolex is a brand that historically straddles both elegance and adventure (more so than Omega). That said, I don’t think the right Rolex for Bond has ever been portrayed on film. There are two Rolex models that make the most sense, with a slight preference toward one specifically. Those two models are the Explorer and the Explorer-dial Submariner. Many make the case that Bond should wear an Explorer because Fleming did - I don’t see that as a strong argument. Bond should wear an Explorer because it’s the perfect model in the Rolex catalogue that balances between robustness/adventure and understated elegance (like Bond himself). The Explorer is a field watch and Bond is a field agent. I can also see people making a solid argument for the Explorer-dial Submariner over the Explorer itself - given that Bond is a naval officer. However, before Bond was a naval officer, he was an alpine climber - and the Explorer is the most appropriate watch for mountaineering. The Explorer has plenty of water resistance, has a classic and conservative look, can take a beating, doesn’t draw too much attention, and is made for field work but is also right at home on the wrist when wearing a suit - the Explorer screams Bond.

I was first introduced to Bond watching Sean Connery's movies on TV as a kid, so I am in the Rolex camp. However, as opposed to an Explorer, a Submariner makes more sense for Bond since he served in the navy and would have to conduct deep sea diving during his missions. Therefore, the Submariner is more in line with being able to endure the elements Bond would encounter.

Why have you not talked about this? In the time where we don't get a new Bondmovie, Why not talk about what we are actually getting? Btw what about an interview with conposer Eric Serra? Bonds watch is a money deal not a romance. Rolex doesn't care about Bond unless Roger Federer became Bond. Omega has used it's Bond connection well but are now overpriced. I'd like to see Bond move on from both. I'd love if Tudor or Chrostpher Ward swoop in and take on that Sponsorship with the Bond films. But there are like 10 different Omega's I want, some I have desired long before becoming a Bond fan, like the Speedmaster(s) worn by Armstrong & Buzz, I still rate that as the greatest watch ever made and the Omega RAF Double Crown Spitfire watch from the 1940s, probably the first ever watch I looked at and said Wow, thats a really nice watch (Which they should reissue, up the size from 33 to 40mm and call the Airmaster)

I enjoyed this debate. And though the ultimate judge may very be "me"; there are factors that can not be in dispute. You mentioned what the literary Bond, wore. And that is fair and has "some" weight to decision. But there is another accessory that the literary Bond has that the theatrical Bond doesn't have. The Bond in the novels drives a Bentley Continental. In the movies, The classic Bond (Sean) drove an Aston Martin. And him driving it has cemented that iconic item. Pierce drove a BMW for a few movies. He did drive an Aston Martin, or returned to driving one an embraced his "style". Bond drives an Aston not a BMW. And no one cries about him not driving a Bently per novels. I watched a video some time back about "What does wearing a Rolex, Omega, Speedmaster say about you" from a watch expert. (I forget his name) but in a nutshell he mentioned if you wear a speedmaster, you are into history. If you wear an Omega, youre into Bond. If you wear a Rolex, its about symbol of achievement or status. He said if you wear a rolex, you are in sales. Or bought it causeyou got promoted, maybe as a midtier manager. His opinion about the 2 watches should really settle it. Lol. Bond would not be concerned with status. Vesper in Casino Royale, notices the watch and makes fhe comment about "SAS Type, with easy smiles and fancy watches." And before she makes the observation of Bond going to "Oxford or wherever" and dressing the type. If there is some truth in that, Bond would want to "style" himself differently. Cause he does not like those from Oxford or the SAS type. And the final video reference is that of Luke from @bondsapartment who made a video and summed up the debate with "if you see someone wearing a Rolex, you dont ask is that Bond's watch?" As no one asks or associate Bently Continental with Bond as they do with Aston Martin. Another thing people associate Bond with "styling" is a Tuxedo. Aston Martin, martini shaken not stirred, tuxedo with a Walther, and Omega (gadeget) watch. His image is one of "Man of Mystery". Aston martin has gadgets. His tux has hidden pockets. His watch is a gadet. It may be all gimmicks. But all something special. And Bond would think he is special. And the fact he has a license to kill, 007, would empower his thought of not being like everyone else.

I think they are both relevant for their time. Rolex was Fleming/Connery and reflective of the original Bond. Omega is no Rolex but talks to modern day advertising consumerism and marketing. So I think both work for their time. Omega pay what Rolex never will so as it will never have the brand prestige or desirability. Similar to Samsung against Apple.

British officers secured obtaining a Rolex, post WWII, if they could afford to do so. They were considerably superior as rugged time pieces for field work. This was long before a Rplex became a status symbol. Fleming most likely came from that lineage during the war. The Explorer became legend when Hillary and Norgay summited Everest with a prototype in 1953. Of course the Explorer found a place on both Flemings and Bond's wrist. In an interview some years ago, Fleming's daughter confirmed the Rolex Explorer as Bond's likely watch of choice. Rolex does not do product placement in films or otherwise. Omega does. I can say this comfortably, since I own both an Explorer and a Seamaster. No offense to anyone, but the Rolex wins as the Bond watch.

As a Bond fan and a watch collector - I have zero interest in Rolex. If you have the money, and the watch is available - you should be able to buy it brand new from the AD or boutique. If its not immediately available, you should able to pay a deposit and acquire the watch when it's in. I have purchased pieces from brands such as JLC directly from the boutiques with no buy history and received wonderful customer service as well as continued invitations to events. Rolex presents a very disrespectful and gross client experience, and I'll never advertise them on my wrist for that reason. Which is a shame, because the watches are fantastic - but the manufactured scarcity and lack of respect ruins the appeal completely. Also Quantum is the best Bond movie ever made. Come at me!!!! 🤣

Nothing to do with Bond, but growing up in the 70s and 80s, Rolex got a reputation for being the go to watch for the nouveau riche, gaudy and loud wide boys who were showing off their wealth with brand names, when that didn't really exist, like it does today. That soured me on Rolex, I am neutral on the Omega, so I'd probably go for the Omega. It is the same with Tag Heuer, it was a great brand, but got tarnished due to the advertising and being worn by the "wrong" people, it went from being the time piece for the motor sport enthusiast to being a gaudy "look at me, I'm rich" accessory. Breitling has a much more sober, refined reputation... Watches are difficult.

Omega is just business. Rolex was chosen by Fleming for a reason which had nothing to do with marketing. Rolex was/is therefore a natural part of Bond's style and personality according to the author. His opinion on that matter is the measure because it laid out the foundation of everything afterwards and without this measure the Bond universe and everything linked with it wouldn't even exist. Omega is Bond's choice according to ads. This isn't even a debate. If you are a true & traditional Bond lover, you'll respect the ideas of the man whose creativity is the reason why we're even following the whole Bond franchise and its extensions such as this channel.

Dear David As a watch expert and a Bond fan I will write some facts: A) The Rolex Submariner was the first diver's watch that reached and exceeded 100 meters in 1953. The Omega Seamaster diver was made 4 years later (1957). B) The Rolex Submariner was the official watch for SAS/SBS, Seals, frogmen and Navy Officers from 1957 till 1967 and again from 1971 till 1977. The Omega Seamaster also became the official watch of the above but just from 1968 to 1971. Then it was rejected again in favor of the Rolex Submariner. C) Fleming didn't wrote that Bond is wearing the Rolex Explorer. He wrote only that it was a Rolex. People are assuming he meant the Explorer just because he wore one. D) Bond is a Navy Officer and ex SAS/SAS member. So in the 50's, 60's and 70's the only watch he could officially have from the Navy and MI6 was the Rolex Submariner. As you see the choice of the Rolex Submariner for 007 was not just because of the Ian Fleming novels. It was because a Navy Commander and ex SAS/SBS member would only wear the Submariner. So the Rolex is the only accurate watch for Bond to wear not only because Fleming wrote it but also in terms of historical military accuracy. In 1995 Omega just paid to be 007 s watch. Just like BMW paid then to replace Aston Martin. Seeing Bond wear an Omega instead of the Rolex is like seeing him driving a BMW instead of an Aston Martin

Also, Omega Marine my friend was not a divers watch by the way that a diver watch is emitted. It was just a patent of a simple watch inside another silled case. This cannot by any means can be considered a divers watch. The diver watch must have the next elements. 1. A case that can be sealed as a submarine. 2. A crown guard that can lock without water. 3. A bezel counter that counts the minutes of you oxygen underwater. 4. A dial with luminous markers for clear reading underwater. The first real diver watches were made in 1953. They were the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and the Rolex Submariner. The Omega Seamaster followed them some 4 years later. End of story. My best regards

@ALL-il1sw First of all, I am speaking as a watch historian and expert with 35 years of experience. I am not a fan boy of anything. You seem to be by the way you are altering the watch history to the measure of your favorite brand. I have had more than 15 vintage Omegas and Rolexes in my life. I am not a fan boy of any of the brands, I just know watch history. As for the Omega Marine, no, it is not considered a divers watch by any watch historian. It was a simple watch, not even a waterproof one. And it was just sealed in a separate waterproof case. To call this a... diver's watch is comical, at the least. But even so, from 1926, Rolex invented the Oyster, which was the first real waterproof watch, and in 1929, it made the Rolex Submarine (not Submariner) which had elements of a real diver, without using... a case inside a case. All my best
