As I recall, every form of stopgap armour directly after the Mk IV Maximus (as in battlfield repair and innovation) but before the Corvus was broadly categorised as the Mk V Heresy, despite its near complete lack of conformity. The Corvus was given to the Raven Guard first (hence the name) and re-designated the Mk VI. Edit: Also, the studded pads found throughout the Heresy pattern were an innovation directly made to counter the advanced ammunition the traitor legions got their hands on; designed to shear off in layers as they took damage rather than a single solid plate fracturing entirely.

MK5 was never really a standard design it was just what could be cobbled together from the armour they had laying around from what I read.

MKV was never actually "in production", it's basically a hodge-podge of armor parts from previous marks cobbled together to replace broken pieces in the supply droughts of the heresy. It's essentially only called MKV as a sort of archival thing, it's not actually its own definitive thing. Then the MKVI was given to the Raven Guard (because there weren't many suits of it, but there also weren't many Raven Guard at the time, probably only a little more than a thousand marines), and later (as of Horus Heresy 2.0) rolled out to other legions.

Not gonna lie, Terminator Armour is pretty awesome. I mean, in Terminator armour, you are a fucking wall of armour. In a Space Hulk, you _become_ the end of any corridor you're walking down. A Genestealer pokes his head out, and you're like, "dead end motherfucker! Have some overwatch!" But even on an open battlefield, Terminators are still pretty awesome. They are the only thing that can surround a Greater Daemon, and the Daemon stops laughing and bothers to actually try.

Ceramite may be a "super fantastical sci fi metal", but the idea is actually based on tank armour from the 20th century, specifically the ceramic Chobham armour of the Challenger and Abrams tanks. The name 'ceramite' is obviously based on the 'ceramic' composite, but given a more sci-fi sounding name. As with most things in 40k, there's basis in the real world. Boltguns are another example of such.

I honestly really like the concept art of the Thunder Armor. The one shown at 2:44 is mostly what I mean, it does look really fucking cool, like stylized auramite Aquila armor. The no powered leg thing is supremely stupid, you'd think it would be the other way around to let you carry the armor's weight better, but on a purely aesthetic basis this one gets me. As for the actually good sets of armor? Crusade, Iron, and mandatory beaky helmet. Aquila is nice enough, pretty good as a baseline standard armor for the 41st Millennium. Oh, and FUCK anything to do with Primaris, that shit can pop a nut and fuck off.

Thirdly, both traitors and loyalists had access to it at the same time, thus it is standard and I like it. The Mk5 is ridiculous in my opinion, the Corvus pattern should have been a specialization, Mk7 should have been introduced as like a Mk3, and Mk8 is an afterthought. The neckguard doesnt limit mobility but bottom visibility, and you cant slap a corvus helmet on it due to the beak interfiering with the neckguard (you can prolly reffer to it as a gorget). It has an added benefit of eliminating a shot trap- a term used in tanks when armor can deflect a hit to a weakspot and is generally avoided in design, Old pre industrial plate armor had some strange ribs near the neck so weapon and arrow hits do not slide from the breastplate into the neck

Notable thing about the Mark 5, in particular the molecular bonding studs. The marines found a use for them actually beyond helping hold the armor together. Specifically against bolter weapons those studs were very helpful at increasing survivability. To explain if those studs take a bolter shell it would penetrate the stud and detonate essentially on the surface of the armor instead of inside the squishy meaty bits. Additionally they were tough enough, and the shaped in such a way that if you struck the stud it might just ricochet off. Weirdly Mark V armor was pretty great and cost effective method for fighting other space marines, not the best, but still really good. Also the Mark 8 from what I remember was a design asked for by the Space Marines themselves, the simple idea being with how the chest was shaped you could have this unfortunate thing where if a bullet struck the upper torso plate it had a not insignificant chance of ricocheting up under the marine's helmet and into the lower jaw. So hence the gorget being added.
@cookiecraze1310

I believe that the Heresy armour's molecular studs were actually just used to fuse more armour onto the old armour, as when the Heresy started they went from fighting some AP weapons strong enough to kill a space marine only carried by afew specialised squads (assuming an alien species even had them) to fighting the fully automatic sniper rifles of the Traitor marines, meaning that they needed more armour to actually defend against anything.

The Mk. IV is considered the best mark out of all the marks available, outside of Mk. X. It is why, right before Horus launched the Heresy, he and Kelbor-Hal made sure every traitor Legions were almost entirely geared with it, even tho Death Guard and Iron Warriors preferred the Mk. III. The Mk. V is not really a model to begin with. It's the amalgamation of field repair, personal modifications and tweaks made by every marine on the field to compensate the lack of supply. Not a single Mk. V armor would look the same, because it was not a real mark; I even think it was named like that retroactively. Mk. VI's development started right at the end of the Great Crusade. It was (when it was still technically Mk. V) named Corvus to honor Corax, Raven Guard's Primarch, because his legion used the armor first to test it on the field. When the Heresy broke out and the Raven Guard went back to Terra, it was all gifted to them when they needed to grow back in strength (some were stolen by Alpha Legion operatives alongside plans, which explains why traitors have it too). Mk. VII's development was launched right after Mk VI's. It was made to be more resilient than Mk. VI, but less expensive and technical than the Mk. IV. The battlefields of the late Horus Heresy were its trial phases, and by the time of the Siege of Terra, many if not the majority of the defenders (Imperial Fists, Blood Angels and White Scars, plus some remnants of other loyalist Legions) were equipped with Mk. VII armors.

sorry to be that guy but, MK V has two versions: The MK V mass production set, which is the artwork you usually see when you look into it, (even the forgeworld models) and then you have the version which is a bunch of pieces armour taken and put together. So like, MK 3 legs with a MK 4 torso and MK 2 head would be that version of MK V

Innovation is heresy, according to the machine cult that supplies the Imperium it's machines and tools. It took a radical high ranking tech priest with a bunch of knowledge, doomsday weapons, and the approval from the son of God for this sorry state of affairs to change.

Mk1: Beginning prototype interesting to see what came before, like seeing a biplane or a zepplin Mk2: Certified Hood Classic. paved the way and looks like some of the best imo Mk3: A more specialised yet flexible armour. could be used for multiple things, like it for the same reason I like Mk2 Mk4: Advanced and sleek armour, yet still has a classic feel to it the zenith right before the fall Mk5: Underrated armour, has a gritty survivalist feel and could be kitbashed with other marks to emphasise that Mk6: Another classic armour, out of canon the oldest and most classic, still cool looking Mk7: Ubiquitous armour its what people used to think when they said space marine, before the primaris Mk8: Another Interesting armour the reinforced gorget is good for sergeants or vets no really awful power armour because they all have a role, purpose or aesthetic they suit. Its just a shame they aren't represented as well as they could be in plastic

Fun fact: IIRC the Corvus pattern armor was actually named so because for a time, when the Mark IV was still the standard issue, the Raven Guard were given prototype variants of the Corvus power armor for field testing and, specifically, to see just how sneaky it could be. Because of their early usage of it, and their contributions to the field testing and whatnot, the Corvus Pattern Power Armor was named after the Primarch of the Raven Guard, *Corvus* Corax.

Heresy pattern has this rugged, more grim look to it that the Mk2 and Mk3 have except it doesn't remind you of past glories, only horror. Also the funniest "feature" of Mk5 being since the added weight needs more power thus need more cables but those cables need more protection so they add MORE armor which means more power needed to be able to carry that extra weight and it goes in a neverending loop.

Mark IV and Mark V are absolutely best Plus Mark V' - little mistake there. Studs there were to basicly bolt additional armor plates, and if marine got hit in said body-part, the studs were ment to take the damage of it. This is due to the armor, being mostly suited/designed to have in mind fighting other space marines, rather than other enemies.

Runic armor for those special wolf bois. Surprised its not like...Runes of the Wulfen armor...given their naming conventions...so Vikings in space confirmed...just very...fluffy at times. Artificer armor is for techmarines...I think and it gave them a bonus in 3rd/4th edition...I also think there was an additional upgrade that had a seperate name or category that increased the save to a 2 plus that wasn't terminator armor, but reinforced/close. I upgraded my Librarian to that variant and it was fun...I had an epistolary at the time too...I honestly didn't really dig psychic phases, but yeah, I've got my old vet.

The MkX armor used by Primaris is my favorite for the fact it’s closer to Mjolnir from Halo than anything else because it’s entirely modular. Intercessors wear the baseline armor Phobos marines wear the stripped down Phobos version Heavy Intercessors and Aggressors wear Gravis, the up armored version Then Inceptors and Suppressors wear a modification between all those variants That’s followed by Mk3 and Mk6.

I mean the Mk.8 might have gotten hate but to a non-space marine combatant even a space marine often the only viable weak spots are the soft seals on the joint and the neck seals, which you guessed so unless heavy weaponry that ignores armour get deployed the overall ceramite shell is pretty tough to crack so most often the neck was a very very valued weak spot especially in melee combat, having a gorget to guard the soft seal is important, I mean even the newer Tacticus or Gravis plates I believe based upon experience received a gorget of sort although its not directly next to the helmet more a part of the lower breastplate. Just my take from what I remember reading, softseals are a good way to get fucked even if you have to have them on the armour.

Mark VI will always be the most aesthetically pleasing and iconic power armor. The old VII looks like Darth Vader and X looks like a technological regression to IV somehow. The Primaris plotline was a throbbing mistake anyway which took a physical game problem (Astartes models are the same size as guardsmen) and changed the lore, somehow not even fixing the original problem but also making another logistical game and lore problem all together (Astartes are still the size of guardsmen but now you have space marine-space marines which defy the logic of the universe and are actually the same size that Astartes SHOULD be, and even shorter than what Primaris SHOULD be).
