third act conflicts are the bane of my existence, especially if they’re over something really sudden and stupid. they honestly kill the vibe of the romance..

What about when the third act is mostly fine until you reach the third to last chapter and the author does something really wrong that wrecks the remainder of the book and even makes you prefer that a character you like had died in the major conflict? Yes, that happened to me with a book I read this year that was published in NOvember 2020 and which has a sequel coming out early next year. And though the book wasn't romance overall, it had romantic elements, yet somehow it was decided to not let two characters who NEEDED each other be otgether. The second book *could" fix that error, but the only ways that can be done are cop outs, basically the person who made the relationship end has to have had their mind controlled, or been influenced by dark magic in some way.

I totally understand what you mean about 3rd act conflicts . It annoys me that they separate for like stupid miscommunication . I just read The Kiss Quotient and they broke up and they both blame themselves and while I appreciate how they can grow whilst apart but that separation part is usually sooo boring to read .

Romance is my favourite genre and I have read a lot of romance books in my life and the third-act-break-up still annoys me every single time. The worst is when I am loving the book so much and then the unnecessary conflict comes along and ruins my whole experience and I have to deduct a star... 🥲

Ugh yes I hate the 3rd act conflict. Especially because often both characters already have some flaws that would be good for a conflict, but instead they almost always fight about something that literally comes out of nowhere

I feel as though Leah on the Offbeat was made to justify Leah in the first book. Leah in the first book (to me) is not that enjoyable a character. But then they were like "WeLl LeAh HaS hEr OwN pRoBlEmS!" but she's still terrible to people (Wells, Garrett, Abby, etc.), which was the main problem with her in the first book.

Your wrap-ups are the best wrap-ups. I love the vibes and that you really go in on your thoughts and feelings. But if you want ideas, Britt's vlog/wrap-up style she's been doing is super interesting I've noticed! Also, when people go over statistics like if they are trying to read all of the books they own or whatever those kinds of additional updates are fun. Well Met was great, do agree on the third act conflict, a little bit of a frustrating shoe-in breakup. But I actually live in the state the story set in and have been to Renaissance fairs just like the one in the book, which made it a fun reading experience! congrats on 100k, by the way! your personality is lovely and I absolutely love the structure of your videos. the editing and the care that is put into them makes them a pleasure to watch!!

I’ve always gotten overly invested in characters and their emotions and felt very strong empathy for them so when authors throw in miscommunication plot lines is physically enrages me ahah. I can feel the frustration of the characters and it’s difficult for me to get through.

If you need a Sci-fi fix with nonbinary pronouns, gender fluidity, etc the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers is incredible. I think she's broken away from the staples of the genre in an incredible and interesting way.

i also read Well Met and adored it until the exact point as you. The conflict literally made me so mad lol. Also have you read The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren? I LOVED that book. So much fun and the romance is great. The conflict that happens also is pretty justified.

Really? I can confidently say I hated the ending of The Unhoneymooners because I thought the conflict was handled badly. I mean, the storyline with the sister and her husband was fine but the conflict between the two protagonists was never really solved. The sister and the love interest both totally dunked on the protagonist. Whereas the sister at least apologizes for it, the love interest just shows up and everything is totally fine again?!

Unpopular opinion: I like 3rd act breakups, that's how I judge if the novel is good or not. If it came out of nowhere, then I won't be impressed but if there was foreshadowing at the beginning or the conflict made sense, it's an automatic 5 star for me

i tried out once and future after LOVING the guinevere deception (an amazing feminist arthurian legend retelling) but didn't finish it either. i didn't dislike the book, but i didn't love it and just kind of phased out of reading it. i also wasn't a huge fan of ari and her perspective, tho i did enjoy the chapters in merlin's. it's not sci-fi, but the guinevere deception is a great alternative retelling that i will literally never shut up about 😂
