loving the hair! some of these books are on my tbr, which I'm working through slowly. I'm always impressed and curious about the people who can read like 8 books in a month. I cannot do that at my best, let alone if I'm going through something or work is busy! Just reading anything is an accomplishment. I'm at 83 books of my 75 book goal for the year though, which is my best in a long, long time! Hard to pick a favorite because I'm a generous reviewer and generally good at picking books I know I like, which means I mostly rate 4 and 5 stars lol But there were a few that surprised me with how good they were, after not knowing what to expect: The Dead Cat Tail Assassin's by P Djeli Clark , We Kept Her in the Cellar by WR Gorman, Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson, This Girl's a Killer by Emma C. Wells, The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett, Never Whistle at Night, the entire Tales From the Gas Station series... lots of bangers this year! Been on a graphic novel kick lately, particularly cute autumnal comics, and loved Sheets, Garlic and the Vampire, and Seance Tea Party as well!

@halliemeyer3490

Her comment about the characters in Just for the Summer being the cool kids really confused me. *spoiler warning* The female main character grew up in foster care because her mom just left her home alone for weeks with no food when she was 8 years old. The book talks a lot about her dealing with her mentally ill mother. Although, I wouldn’t consider her a nerd, she is definitely not a cool kid in my opinion.

I think Just for the Summer is the best Abby Jimenez book so far, I liked the mental struggle aspect for the main gal, and the family stuff going of for the main guy, but if a reader can't connect to the characters I get why they would give a 2 stars. I loved Will of the Many, and despise the first 200 pages are indeed as you said, I ate up that world building and the roots for why the main guy has to go to the school. The ending is so UUUGH I NEED THE NEXT BOOK, and it's been a long time since I got this anxious for a sequel.

I would really love a video on reading in a foreign language. English is not my first language, and although I speak English and even study in English, I never enjoyed reading (or watching movies) in English because it felt like a task. What was the journey like for you, and how does it feel to then read in your native language again? I'm really happy you are back ❤

Interesting idea! Just a thought: we non- English native speakers shouldn't feel pressured to read (mostly) in English. Most of the huge booktube channels are by native English speakers and most of them don't read in any other language. Then again: reading in English has the advantage of not having to wait for a translation (that may never come) and sometimes it's about the beauty of language. I think, in the end, it's a question of building a habit and getting more comfortable with time with reading in a foreign language 😊

When you were describing that Japanese book, I kept thinking about Kobo Abe. He's also a Japanese writer and his books are also really weird but so fun to read. Very philosophical, very abstract and strange, but very much about searching your own individuality and identity. You may enjoy another book by Bell Hooks: Salvation ! It's also a collection of works/talks about love and self-love, but from the lens of Black people who have been taught by White Imperialism to *not love themselves. Her writing helps the reader empathize with a group of people that have been portrayed a certain way by the media and selective (White) history. Ultimately, loving others and loving ourselves is the only path toward a more safe and just world - it oozes optimism, empathy and hope and it's just wonderful.

Yay new vid! Always love your round ups because you read so broadly. There’s always something that peaks my interest. I thought Just for the Summer was super cute! I let my mum borrow it and she also loved it. You’ve made me want to pick up Funny Story now! I’ve been reading a trashy vampire series….Filth Rich Vampires. It’s S-P-I-C-Y spicy! And it’s definitely not good. But it is FUN! I know you enjoyed Bride by Ali Hazelwood so it may be up your alley of “books you know aren’t gonna be good but are a very fun ride” You do have to commit to reading all four tho as it’s one big story split up. I got the first one, finished it and was like, dammit I need the rest!

Speaking of - "Weird, not fitting into society, finding comfort in each other"-romance: I wonder if you'd (or anyone else who feels the same) like "Keeper of enchanted rooms" by C.N. Holmberg. I'd describe it as magic + romance + 1840s + strong female characters + complex feelings ish. I found it randomly and thought it would be easygoing romantasy, but it was much more than that.
