The Broken Past

Күн бұрын

Today, we take the broken down, non-functioning Gameboy Advance that we repaired and reshelled about six months ago, to the next level! In this video, we go in depth in the process of installing a FunnyPlaying, IPS V2 display, into a Gameboy Advance!
This video covers the process in pretty extensive detail, going through the process of disassembly, shell trimming, alignment, ribbon management, and brightness control management; all to give you the confidence to tackle this project yourself! The overall process isn't too hard, and the results are well worth the effort!
Have any questions after watching the video? Please leave them in the comments. I want to help make your Gameboy Advance screen replacement a success, so if you have any concerns or uncertainties about the process, I'd love to help answer any questions you have.
Thanks for watching!

what i did, because my ocd is crazy, i powered on the screen - so the white gameboy logo screen would appear, and then i eyeballed it up to the frame looking at the screen and then stuck the screen to the faceplate that way so i knew that it would be alligned correctly. Fingerprint and dust spec nightmare though, but some glass cleaner will work well to clean it. i agree also to use electrical tape and not the sponge to cover the components inside because the case can be a tight fit with the ribbon cables and add more pressure to the screen, and some edges of the chips can pierce through the sponge anyway over time. Sponge also can absorb moisture or liquid so good not to use it really as it would centralize the moisture directly to the centre and keep it there. probably me being picky with this (just did mine today) and found this to be a good way to align the screen

Should have gotten a pre cut shell and the bracket. Not sure if the brackets existed yet but I think the shells already did. The bracket eliminates the need of the adhesive that you put on the shell and the spacers so if and when you need to go in and clean or replace the screen, it is easier to get it off. Great tutorial.

It is very difficult to remove the screen for adjustment after you glue it down with the black adhesive material they give you. I did it, but it took a lot of fine prying with razor blades. I had to modify the shell a little more than in the video. The glass lens they give you has a thinner black mask than the stock one, so it will show some of the white boarder. I had to trim that off since I'm aiming for perfection here. Then if I only cut the inside shell as per the video, the screen was skewed a little to the right. To even it out, I had to trim the wall away along the start/select buttons so that I could move the screen to the left more. Now it's looking good - thanks for the video.

@@TheBrokenPast do you think there is enough space for a three wire pin connector? I'm thinking about doing that when mine arrives so I can disconnect without having to resolder anything in the future
@TheBrokenPast
@TheBrokenPast 4 жыл бұрын
@@stevenbenson9976 Great question. I've actually had to take mine apart a few times since I made this video to make some minor tweaks to it. Had I used the other TPs when I did it, it would have made those subsequent modifications so much easier! There is some space between the back of the screen and the shell, that may provide a bit of room if you have a thin enough connector. But it would still be pretty tight, and I'd be a bit concerned of cracking the screen with too much pressure. I know my AGS-101 cable has a bit thicker components than what are used on this ribbon cable, so there might be enough room. It would definitely be a pretty tight fit though!

Good question! Unfortunately, there's no real specific source where I get them from. I'll usually just look online and buy them from the cheapest source I can find (HandHeldLegend, eBay from various sellers, AliExpress, Amazon, etc.). Most of them are obviously cheap clones, so it's hard to tell which may be good quality, and which isn't. I think the expectation is to assume that the quality won't be good, so you can be happy if the quality ends up being reasonably better than expected!

I just got stuck on my mod. I didn't get any tape to hold the ribbon cable down, I'm not sure if it's that important to be stuck down or not since it has the foam non sticky part that gets sandwiched. but I was thinking the same thing. I thought the waste screen gasket is what I should use to hold it down just in case. I'm glad I'm not the only one to think of it lol
@ekojar3047
@ekojar3047 2 жыл бұрын
Just finished it and it looks amazing, like a modern phone screen. I did no solder, standard brightness, but I had to get the clear slime green shell so I had to trim it, I gotta say, it was worth it for me to trim it. I wish I had better tools. But I was able to get it carved out with a retractable snap away blade thing, and I couldn't find a pair of flush cuts so I got the smallest pair of dikes or wire cutters they had at my lowes. I spent a total of 6 hours tearing down and trimming, sanding. testing. Fitting the clean juice usb c battery and cutting the hole for that too. Trial and error on the screen fitting utill it was finaly there. That Left bumper area is the hardest part, I had to just sand and sand until I shaves off enough. It has to be nearly hair thin. I was not confident enough to try and split it with a knife. It's just too important of a part to accidentally slip or the plastic decides to split the wrong direction. You could probably super glue it back,, but with a clear shell,, you see it all. Once I finally got the screen fitting and the gasket in. I took a deep breath and a break to quickly finally get the screen and immediately the glass on so zero dust got In our screen. I seriously didn't even breathe between the two and just did it as fast and accurate as possible and it worked beautifully. I was worried about the gasket, the shell, and the lense not lining up together so i paid super close attention first on the gasket, then at this point I flipped it around and around to double check it was all lined up before i fully put pressure down on the adhesive. It worked out great , just be aware of this if you plan on doing it. If it does get off, Don't freak out,, its not the end of the world. Im just detail oriented. Most people won't notice if its off. That part worked great,, i was scared of that part the most but it went smooth. Now It didn't help that I didn't have the correct sized tri winged screwdriver, mine was a little too sharp. I have to get me a good one asap so I can button it up tighter. There's a few gaps. But I was able to play some games on it and it looks amazing. Im glad the work is mostly done. I'm ready for next payday to get some more games and a few nice holo stickers! Thanks for the video. I did have to use it for the ribbon cable part. I just wanted to double check the folds and insulation that some of the other videos either went over too quickly , or they showed the 40 pin way and mines is the 32. My screen did come with a clear insulating film that covers the whole back of the screen, but just to be safe. I electrical tapped the unused 40 pin and yes, cut out a piece of the screen gasket to tape the ribbon cable to the back of the screen. I think I have it all protected.

Yep, get a small flat file. The kind used for jewelry making. Widen the viewport by about 2mm on the bottom/right/left and 1mm on the top. Use some progressively finer sandpaper to make it smooth. It won't be a perfect rectangle, but it's impossible to tell once the screen lens is on.

I'd be interested if you made a video comparing the 2, is there one you'd personally recommend. Why did you choose to play the orange one? Do you think this whole process is relatively easy for a beginner? I have a lot of practice taking stuff apart but none soldering and it looks very fine. Wouldn't want to mess anything up during the install.

I'd definitely like to make a video comparing between the two in the near future. That's. up there on my list, once I can find time to do one! As far as the complexity of actually doing it, as long as you're somewhat decent with soldering and have a steady hand, it's really a pretty simple process to do! One of the test points is pretty tiny, and the wire is quite fine to get to solder to, but overall it really isn't that hard to do. And if you do ruin one trying to do so, consider it practice for the next one! :)

So, you had to add some tin to the contacts before heating up the wire and attaching it to the ribbon, but for the contacts on the board you dont have to add any tin because there is already some solder on those contacts? Gonna give this a try this week and dont want to eff it up!

Did you figure this out already cause I am wondering the same thing. I don't want to eff it up.

@@OnettBoyXD hey! I've done it a few times, tin your wires and add a little flux to the contacts on the ribbon and the board. For the ribbon pads, lower temperature on the iron if possible, get a nice blob of solder on the tip, and just kind of boop the pad so a little solder sticks to the contacts. There are solder practice kits if you feel intimidated, but the brightness controls are pretty easy once you've tried it a couple times.

Does anybody know what type and size screws the GBA uses? I bought a pre-cut shell but the screws won't go in and now I've destroyed the top of the screws so the screwdriver doesn't have any grip anymore.

Does wiring in the brightness adjustment effect the GBA’s ability to make gameboy color games full screen? (using select and left shoulder buttons to make Pokémon Yellow full screen for example)

Hi, I have a GBA Funnyplaying IPS v2 kit perfect instaled but sometimes if I quick turn On and turn of and turn On again the console, I have a Black screen. This just happens sometimes and if I get Black screen and turn of/turn on I can a normal screen. Is this normal to happen? I check my ribbon conections multiples times and test if two Funnyplaying ribbon and two IPS screen.

Mine came with a plastic insulating film for the metal part of the screen, I have already installed it with a replacement foam insulant and completely forgot about the film, do I need to take it apart and put it on or will it be fine?

The AGS-101 looks like it has better contrast to be honest, it’ll have better battery life too. I get the hype around these IPS screens, I’m just not sure if I like the resolution scaling and frame dropping issues. At least they’re cheaper than 101’s for those interested in having a backlit screen.

Where to get custom lenses for the IPS mod? I want to recreate limited edition Gameboys but with IPS screen. I can only find the regular lens, not the special ones (Pokémon, etc)

So I just got mine in and was wondering what kind of battery I should use? It seems to drain my normal batteries insanely fast so I was looking into eneloop batteries. Would those be good?

I just did this mod and ran into a problem. After I put it back together it wouldn't turn on. I did test the screen when installing the mod and it did work. I took out the batteries and then put them back in. This time it powered on. I tested changing the brightness and that worked. The GBA never booted into the game though. It was stuck on the gameboy screen. Then after 30 seconds it turned off on it's own. Now I can't get it to turn back on but when I turn it off the power led does flash red for a second. Any ideas? The only error I realize I made was not using Kapton tape. I thought that was optional. This is the first mod I have ever tried to do. Please be kind. Thank you

Unfortunately, after 1 minute my gameboy light starts going red and slowly dims entirely until the screen itself turns off. However, the sound and game keeps playing in the background. It happens faster the brighter the screen is. I have no clue what to do... With or without the soldering, it happens. I swapped GBA motherboards, still the same issue. Added tape to make sure everything is insulated, still no sauce. Tried 8 different batteries, doesnt matter... Anyone recognizes my problem and knows the fix?
