Fabio always liked Nadal's ball, was able to get on top of it and take it early using the power of his opponent, was a tough match for Nadal. Also that backhand...I think he should get more credit for a world class backhand, could place the ball precisely wherever he wanted, have seen only Nishikori and Djokovic with that backhand quality placement and precision.

Agreed, but another big factor is a lot of their meetings and the most heated part of their rivalry were in 2015, where Nadal’s depth was really lacking. Allowed Fognini to really dictate and look like Djokovic out there. As we can see here though, Fognini does force the best out of Rafa. He gave him a good fight here which can’t be said for literally anyone else in the 2017 clay season besides Thiem, maybe Goffin, who is another kinda tough matchup for Nadal but only when he plays his absolute best.

Had Fognini worked harder he would have had all the tools to become a nightmare matchup for Rafa, even on clay. He had great ball-striking off of both wings, could easily change direction, and didn't seem to be bothered by Rafa's spinny balls. Luckily for Rafa, Fabio lacked consistency.
