Mikes wood shop

5 жыл бұрын

I've had quite a few question over the past few months about what I use for my table saw dust collecting.
I figured why not show what I have used over the past several shops that I have built.
The dust collector I use for the SawStop is a Rikon 13/4 HP canister vac. I've used this exact unite with my Rigid saw so I figure I've hade it for three years.
The piping is 4" SDR35 green sewer pipe with 4" SDR35 fittings. This material can be bought at any plumbing supply house ,Home Depot or Lowes. Fittings I use are.
Long turn elbow or also know as a sweep.
45* or St. 45* fitting
221/2* or St. 221/2* fitting
cap or a nohub cap.
the Y fitting you can use the dust piping brand from Woodcraft this will eliminate joints in the piping system.
the SDR35 comes in 10' and 20' lengths
blast gates are Woodcraft or Rockler brand.
4" blast gate $6.99
Blast gate with wall support $6.99
21/2" blast gate $4.99
4"x10" flex hose $39.99
21/2"x10' flex hose $24.99
I hope this video was helpful and if you would like to ask a question or would like a Mikes wood shop sticker please e mail me your info to economyplmbg@aol.com
Thanks Mike

Thank you for specifically calling out what sort of PVC pipe to use. I had heard people talk about the different types of PVC on KZbin but they didn't go into detail. Appreciate it!

Finally!! Someone who knows how to make dust collection equipment and piping work with PVC plumbing pipe! THANK YOU!!! 👍👍 I bought a bunch of fittings from Woodcraft, but they don't all work together. Like you said, you need special connectors etc. to make them work, but then where do you get the correct pipe? You answered all my questions in this video! I'm going to Ace tomorrow to pick up some sewer drain pipe and fittings. Hopefully it all assembles as easily as you make it look. thanks again!

D2729 thin wall PVC pipe. I don't glue any joints. I put a short piece of mylar powder coating masking tape on joints to secure them. Mylar/silicone tape doesn't leave adhesive residue later. Then stretch -wrap joint to make air tight. Makes modifications easy later.

The grease will help seal a bit too! Works great Also remember, this system may be in use for 25 years or more, so try to give a damn about the quality of your installation. There's no need to waste money on pipe or fittings that are not necessary to your shop, but also don't cut corners! Make this the best build you can!

Good video. I'm just finishing up my system and I've watched a lot of videos trying to glean all the tips I can. The one thing I've only heard here is putting the PVC fittings together with just a little grease. Great idea. It does a few things. 1) It lets the fittings slide together easier and fully seat. 2) It makes them easier to take apart if you need to change or add to the system. 3) I think it actually helps seal the system. I used a little bearing grease on each connection and two gutter screws to hold them together. I would say none of my joints leak at all. Putting the grease on the male part pushes any extra grease out but then since it's a vacuum system any small voids in the joint will draw in a little grease and seal it. Well that's my theory anyway.

Great video Mike. I, like you, was a plumber for ten years. I left plumbing and now own a plumbing supply company. Two years ago I put in a dust collection system using 3” sch 40 foam core. I ran it from my shop vac with a 30 gallon barrel to make it 2 stage. Worked good but all the adapter fittings and clamps cost a small fortune. Last week I got a new Grizzly dust collector with a 6” inlet so I tore out all the old system and ran 4 & 6” SDR35 pipe and fittings. I’m not a fan of the plastic gates so I made my own from plywood. I also did not glue it, but rather used 3” foil cold weather duct tape. That worked really well. I also used galvanized clips, although they are bigger that the SDR pipe. I wrapped them with rubber pipe insulation which made them snug and also doubles as an anti vibration if need be. It’s up and running and works great. I’m doing the grounding system this weekend. I only wish I had found your video sooner but that’s the way it goes.

Nice job! Think you're saving us lots of cash and time. I don't have any ground on my plastic and have never got shocked. I believe it would be highly unlikely that this would cause a fire in real-time. I try and use the least amount of flex pipe as possible. Connecting my chops saw and Table saw closest to the collector first then the machines that run slowest last. I also use sewer pipe although if at all possible 5-6inch pipe would be best, but as I have a 1.5Hp motor that's not possible... I put up with the cold winters blowing the air out a vent in the wall rather than the expense of filters. Lastly, if you do this you need to have an inlet from the outside so as not to create negative pressure in the shop if it is a tight build.
