I started watching your videos 2 months ago and was excited to start a routine. However I just became overwhelmed as more products are introduced in videos. I am happy to see today's recommendations are consistent with past recommendations as I keep thinking " maybe I should"'ve tried this instead after purchasing previous rcommendations. Based on today's video, I am now confident that I am ready to start my retonoid journey with a finalized list! I would like to mention I have flaky skin and just incorporating the L'oreal revitalift triple power lzr instead of a physical exfoliater, the results have been amazing for me in a short time period and I have also Ben using the avene eye cream for over a month and can very clearly see a difference in under eyes and crows feet. I am so happy I found you on you tube!

I was in same position but i started with a minimal skin care mornings gentle cleanser, Hyluronic Acid Serum, Moisturizer and Spf before makeup and on evening Makeup removing , gentle Cleanser , Retinol , Caffeine for under eye from Ordinary and evening moisturizer, once or to per week also a peeling cleanser. My skin started to be super puffy and elastic. I have dry skin and in winter i had problems with super drying patches that peeled themselves. Of course you have to understand your type of skin and the problems that you really want to improve with your routine. Good luck

This video exemplifies what I like about you. Everything you say is scientific, backed up by studies. I love that I can go to the studies and see what the results are. I'm retired but have a scientific degree and understand that studies have to be designed properly and that sampling is all important. I've been using retinol for about seven months and just started on tretinoin yesterday, so I can't say if there's any difference. I did see results with retinol and I use Vitamin C serum in the morning. Sunscreen every single day. When I picked up the tretinoin the pharmacist told me about using sunscreen and I told her I had it on at that time. She got a big kick out of that as it was snowing. My light skinned husband has has two minor skin cancers removed, I have a Mediterranean complexion but I'm taking no chances. Thank you again for your clear, concise, informative videos. I send links to them to all my friends and family.

So I’m going to look into one of the things you mentioned. My hands are dry, but don’t show my age, yet. So I need whatever I use on my neck for my hands. I have so many products I’ve tried. I did order some Versed. But it hasn’t arrived yet. I think I ordered the body lotion. But it’s been a while so I’m not sure. I also ordered some No. 7 ceramides & peptides capsules to try. Those haven’t arrived yet either. I’m not sure how they will work. But I thought I would give it a try. I love your videos. They always have so much information in them. The information here is so helpful. I have seen products on the market for years with a tiny amount of retinol in them and thought they would never work. However, after two attempts with Retin-A, which resulted in redness, a ton of peeling and no help with acne, I have decided to go forward with some over the counter retinol. Consistency is the right approach. We'll see what happens after 3 months.

I think a person's age at baseline will make a difference too. While I had used tretinoin off and on over about 20 years, I did not get serious and use it almost daily until 2019. I am just now beginning to see some softening of wrinkles...BUT, I am now 75. When I was a child in SoCal, sunscreen did not screen anything, so I played outside everyday, got visible light, UVA, UVB exposure for at least 30 years before sunscreens began to have even SPF 15. Someone who begins a retinol at age 25-30 will probably see improvements to photo damage and wrinkles, because they are not as bad in the first place, their skin is also already functioning better, and turning over more quickly. I think our expectations have to be tempered by what condition our skin is in at baseline.

I can't speak directly to the anti aging part as I honestly don't struggle with that yet, but as far as texture and acne goes, Tretinoin was far above OTC products for me. My skin was never as smooth and I still got clogged pores/blackheads on my nose that were RELENTLESS. After being on tret for just 6 months those problems are all completely gone, compared to being on OTC retinoids or differin for years.

This comprehensive explanation is really what people need to listen in order to start using retinoid. I've been using 0.1 % tretinoin and I'm grateful that I can tolerate it. Since I'm acne prone, prescription retinoids are not a big problem. In my country, it's cheaper getting prescription strength retinoid than getting OTC Retinoid. Otc products are way too expensive. So I decided to start my journey with tretinoin and I've committed to use it forever. Alongside with sunscreen and moisturizer, I've achieved my healthy youthful skin. But for those of you who can not access Prescription stuff, just use OTC retinoid, especially if you just want to pursue anti aging benefit.
@whitepaper5241

Same here. I've been using the 0.1% tretinoin for months without any side effects at all, and it's a lot cheaper than otc retinols. Otc retinols are usually above $7, while tretinoin creams are around $2-$4 in my country, depending on the concentration.
@courtneycameron6930

I definitely agree! I used OTC retinols for maybe 2 years and didn’t noticed that much of a difference, however I had no irritation with it. My pocket was also hurting from the OTC prices. Started tretinoin 8wks ago and already notice a big difference in my acne but am dealing with some mild dryness. However, I paid $4 for tretinoin which will last me probably 6 months, so nothing can beat that

@@lisk3822 but you have to remember that most of us who are living outside US is not lucky enough to get high quality evidence based cosmeceutical products. US based cosmetics are way way way too expensive and very cost prohibitive here. So of course prescription stuff that is very2x affordable is such a bless for us. For example, here in my country, azelaic acid in any concentration is considered a drug, unlike in the US which you can find in 10 % concentration. And things like benzoyl peroxide here is considered a limited drugs, which means that if you wanna use that, you have to go to a pharmacy and obtain that, unlike in the US, which you can find in Costco, Target, and walmart.

Years ago I was prescribed Retin A for a skin condition (not anti aging). Initially I loved it because it cleared up my complexion and made my skin super smooth. Months later, it made my skin incredibly dry no matter what moisturizer I applied on top and very irritated to boot. It's a drug and it has side effects! I also used Differin for a while when it went OTC, but it hit a plateau and wasn't working well. I also got tired of having to buy separate treatments /serums/moisturizers. Fortunately I came across this channel! I've been using the Olay Max and while it hasn't been enough time yet to see the full effects, I really like it. It's moisturizing and doesn't irritate my skin at all.

I live in Australia where it's free to see a doctor and the price of Tretinoin is about the same price as a number of OTC retinoids. I'm currently using a compounded prescription of Tret that also contains niacinamide and hyaluronic acid which also means I don't have to purchase a separate HA/VB3 product- so the prescription option becomes the most affordable option overall. I patiently worked on repairing my dry, sensitive skin barrier before I added a retinoid and when I did, I added it into my routine slowly. Initially I had a tiny bit of flaking around the corners of my mouth but otherwise my skin tolerated it well. I do use Avene Physiolift Eyes (the closest thing we have to RetiAL Eyes) for the sensitive eye area and Versed body retinol- which per mL is about 25% cheaper than Paula's Choice option. Thank you for this video, even though I don't use OTC options, it's good to see that you mention factors like price and accessibility as things to consider when making your decision.

I used a reputable cosmetic brand's Retinal Serum (no percentage noted on package) nightly on my face for three weeks and experienced 3 months of major irritation. Once that cleared up and having watched a Budget Dermatologist video, I switched to Avene .05 on a two-time a week schedule to an every other day schedule for one month and had no reaction to it, though I did not notice any appreciable improvement in skin tone or wrinkle reduction. I then added Avene .1 intensive cream, alternating it with Avene .05 on an every other day schedule. It's now been eight months and I am almost exclusively using Avene .1. I could not be happier. Facial skin is smooth and silky and 68 yrs of wrinkling is fading. I love it and will gladly purchase a retinal body cream upon Dr. Locke's recommendations. PS- I also use Vichy 89 serum in the morning upon her recommendations and recommend this product too!

I'm 34, been using retinol and retinaldehyde for 14 months and all I have are 3 very small and shallow creases on my forehead. I have to frown really hard to make them visible. I know 18 year olds who have more lines than I do. I used: Olay 24 Serum Neutrogena Cellular Boost Concentrate Avene RetrinAL Intense 0.1

Wonderful video about Retinoids. A long while ago my Derm Dr. friend (I'm not her patient) threw me a tube of Tretinoin .05% for my face. Had no problems with it at all. She said I don't need it but "what the hell". I want to start early preventing lines and wrinkles.. But then my sensitive neck.....OMG. So she told me to start with moisturizer first, then she gave me a Retinol and that worked great to put on top of the moisturizer. Did that for a couple of months and then she turned me onto the Mae Love Moonlight Retinaldehyde for my neck and she told me to put it all the way down to my "Ta Tas" lol. Everything is working great with Vit C and sunscreen in the morning and the Retinoids at night. Thank you for a great video!

I've never used retinol, so i can't speak on it. But i've been using tretinoin for almost a year now. I started out with the 0.05% strength last year, and switched to the 0.1% 3 months ago. Never had any irritation or side effects with any of them. They do take time to show results, and i had a much better experience with Benzoyl Peroxide when it comes to acne, although it's not nearly as effective as it used to be. I switched to the gel version last week, and i'm glad i did. I think it's much more effective at treating acne. My acne heals a lot faster using the gel, meanwhile the cream version didn't do anything on my acne. It just brightened my hyperpigmentation a little bit, and it was way too greasy for my skin - i have a combination skin. Now i only use the tretinoin gel for my acne. I don't use any actives at all besides my moisturizer that contains niacinamide, which is also helpful at combating redness and irritation.

I'm curious of your opinion of Adapalene and how you think it compares to over the counter retinol? I've been using differen for about a year now, and my skin has never looked so good! I don't have significant acne, so i started using it in place of retinol due to some of what I had read. I would really love to hear your perspective as a dermatologist!

I’m 20 yr old guy and just recently started to incorporate retinol into my skincare routine almost just a month. I’m using the Olay retinol 24 moisturizer and I was blown away when I saw great results on the first use when it comes to brightness and texture. I’m curious though and wanted to ask, does the OTC retinol have the same end result(obviously long time use) in contrast with their prescription counterparts?

Just try to be patient. I‘m using a similar service to get my tret. They started me with 0.0125. It took me three months to finally be able to tolerate daily use together with tons of soothing and moisturizing steps both in my morning and evening routine. They now put me on 0.025. Haven‘t started yet, but will definitely go back to starting with 3 times a week and building up to not destroy my skin barrier again. I guess some of us are just more sensitive.
