For the first time EVER, I am sharing a Real Life budget with you. A couple of months ago, we asked my readers to submit their REAL information. Real spending, real debt, and real savings goals.
I am taking those real life numbers and showing you how I would organize that information using my Budget By Paycheck Method.
For this first one, we are showing and stuffing all of the information into one video. In the future, we will break these down into two videos to highlight all of the details of my BBP method.

Miko...I work for the IRS and I just want to say that this woman receives an awful large tax refund. Which is nice...but it means she is paying way too much tax. It seems that part of the tax system is the same in Canada as USA. If she wants, she can reduce her tax withholding by $100 per week, which is pretty much $400 per month more in her pocket. And still she'll receive a tax refund of about over $1k. She can talk to her payroll department on how to reduce her withholdings. Just a thought, if she's interested. I see this everyday at work and most people don't realize they can help themselves out. Great vid.

I thought the same thing, that’s a pretty significant tax refund - which means the government is benefiting throughout the year and she has less $ in her pocket. She should definitely talk to her payroll department, maybe they have her set up incorrectly in the payroll system.

Hockey is one of my biggest parental regrets (sons are 35 and 33 now). A) HUGE sums of money spent on equipment, camps, ice time, travel teams - they played all the way to Juniors. Her 11 year old is just getting started, costs are going to be climbing from here - and I didn't see a sinking fund for $600+ skates and $150 sticks (that break very easily); B) Injuries - concussions, broken wrist, broken ankles, broken ribs . . . C) hockey is all consuming time wise; D) past college they play very little, an occasional pick up game or short men's league. Encourage a sport that he will continue - running, swimming, golf, tennis. Less expense, less injury. We stupidly spent tens of thousands of dollars we did not have to blow. Also, how is this for crazy - one son played in a travel league that played Sundays in a neighboring state - the league was so rough they wouldn't let the teams shake hands at the end of the game for fear a fight would break out (happened on more than one occasionl) and they always had a couple of officers present at the games. This was an elite travel team (several of the opponents were sons of professional players). WTH were we thinking - what were we teaching them?

Buying clothes every month is not a necessity, also I agree, your child is only in sports you can afford. Some kids with 2 parents still are in none. It is an opportunity to teach your children young about finances so they dont end up making the same mistakes. I know being in Canada myself. 75 bucks is barely any food, I would take my fun and clothes money for food.

Once you get caught up, it can be rather simple: Build up a buffer. usually 1,000. Calculate total fixed expenses. divide by number of checks. Auto-debit that amount into a bills checking account. Put fixed bills on autopay. Monitor this account, knowing nothing but bills should leave it, and nothing but paychecks should enter. Remainder of checks goes into second account, or is taken out in cash for envelopes. That is the amount you have to work with for variable expenses, either weekly or biweekly.

Had to pause at 20:14 to correct you. Closing a credit card will still remain on your report for 10 years, so that history is not lost right away. Closing a card will however impact credit utilization once its reported to the bureaus and accounts for 35% of your score so can cause a drop in score. The utilization sweet spot is >5% reporting. Once that reports then pay the balance so you dont pay interest. If your score is important right now, keep the account open but do a freeze on it so you can't spend.

I am determined to be debt free. For 2021, can you add a couple of summary pages to the back of the workbook that we could use to wrap up the year and/or add reflection notes? I'd remove the credit card information from ALL online shopping (stores & devices used regularly) & lock it away so you REALLY have to think before you use it! I only carry the card that has rewards & Target (mine is just a store card not a Visa & I end up there unscheduled when out with friends because I don't drive so they'll randomly offer to take me for things I can't carry on the bus). The rest of my store cards & empty credit cards are at home! MUCH less temptation without closing those cards I've had for over 10 years!

I would love to have you do this for me and my family. We have a very interesting situation, my husband is on a transplant list for double lung due to cystic fibrosis. We have to relocate. How do we submit for this?

Thank you so much. I started following your methods last month and we have improved tremendously on our budget. I’ve had major trial and error but my husband and I are understanding it more. This video, your other videos, and methods has provided more tips and structure to our budget while adding some fun into the process that keeps us wanting to push for a debt free life! ☺️ Kumiko

Forget the $11 bank fee, refinance that 21% interest loan! That's $8,200 per year or $683 a month just in interest!! But also do switch banks, lol

This was SO helpful!! Do you have any of these worksheets available to use please? Some of them would make a great addition to my digital bbp workbook. Would be good to go right back to basics!!

I get paid weekly and my biggest hurdle was thinking I needed to contribute to my sinking funds every week. I was literally stuck on how to do this!! Thankfully, Miko, you showed me exactly how to manage this and that its ok to not put $$ in the envelopes each week.

I just found your videos and wow, you are great at what you do. As I am just starting out a biweekly budget, I find this overwhelming, but as you say at the end of your video, it becomes easier with time. I did pick up 1 or 2 things that I am going to check with my bank. I am paying almost $17 in bank fees per month. Thank you for this and I am ecstatic that I found your videos..... take care and stay safe.

Miko, thank you for this! 😍 I love that you are featuring more budgets. I get paid on a 15th and last day of the month pay cycle. I would love to see people with all kinds of income - low and middle - this is helpful and relatable especially for single moms like myself with two teenagers.

Ashley kesby you budget for the lowest possible value. I personally use pencil because my paychecks vary. That way I can change my values when my actual check comes in :)

Getting paid by the hour makes it easy. If you know your deductions from your paycheck, your pay rate, and your hours you can calculate your paycheck to the penny. This is what I do. Use a paycheck calculator such as paycheckcity.com

I don’t know how to change your fixed expense of rent to split half from each paycheque when getting paid bi-weekly when the rent takes up whole entire paycheque?

I just love the videos, however how or where is count the interest from the debt? ...
@chiknlittle
@chiknlittle 4 жыл бұрын
Aglaee Rendon I count mine on the debt tracker in the bbp workbook. There’s a section where you put “this months debt”, where I calculate my starting debt once the month starts, then when I start the next month I add it all together and again put that number. By that time, it includes the interest and you can see that when you close your budget on the debt page and you see how much you paid in dollar amount vs how much less debt you have since last month. The latter will inevitably be less because youve been charged interest.
