Sounds like paladins need some more Lovecraft in their lives. I do also like how you're talking about paladins as if it's something you just walk into. Go in one door and come out like a paladin. Don't the vast majority of paladins have rather exhaustive selection processes because the right people are rather rare. I mean you're basically talking about aspirational heroes that have an external mechanism to hold them to their own values.
@TheBurgerkrieg6 жыл бұрын
How restrictive the selection process is would rather depend on the specific setting you have. Maybe becoming a paladin is about as difficult as becoming an ordained minister.
@Vrynix6 жыл бұрын
@@TheBurgerkrieg True I suppose. Especially if institutions/higher powers don't care if they fail and suffer from whatever punishment breaking the oaths entail. The fast food service equivalent of paladins. Seems like a good idea at the time, but it's a gamble if you're going to spend a lot of time on the toilet later.

I always like to play unusual characters, but sometimes fall into the comfort of familiar and comfortable archetypes (half-elf ranger, shifter rogue). However, this time I subverted my expectations and went wild; picked a Grave Cleric Lizardfolk. Should be interesting.

I was thinking about a homebrew of a paladin subclass similar to the forge cleric. Then you can serve the deity of commerce and the craft focusing on ethical business able to magically mold materials into equipment and being gifted by the deity to be good at haggling and stuff as long as you follow ethical business practices.

Currently playing a Dragonborn paladin under the ancients oath who is essentially a slightly skewed Lennie from of mice and men. He’s a big powerful giant that was raised by an adopted halfling farming family. He’s very nature-inclined and is very sweet to people* but also not all there upstairs. Where Lennie would accidentally hurt people and animals in acts of love, this boy tends to (unknowingly) intimidate or force people to see his way religiously/morally. Following the ancients oath, he’s devout to nature and all living things, unless they prove harmful to those things. This makes him extremely protective of party members and animals and such, but gives leeway so he can rationalize harm in battle to himself. Also because he’s not the brightest tool in the crayon box, it gives other players the chance to try to bluff their shenanigans past him, thus helping with the stick-in-the-mud stereotype. Plus it creates some fun moments between fights and serious takes. Hope this helps others looking for new ways to make paladins fun again !!

Here's an idea for a paladin, or maybe even a zealot barbarian: Champion of Sasquatch/Wendigo. A warrior concerned with the concepts of feast and famine, the harvest and the hunt. At times of peace, he assists in growth and fertility, presides over marriages and births and ensures prosperity. In times of war or hardship, he embodies nature's predatory and violent tendencies, using often brutal methods to ensure the survival of his congregation, even cannibalism or blood sacrifice are considered viable options to protect the tribe or following. This would very definitely be a neutral or maybe even somewhat evil character, the type whose god or totem compels him to act in ways that may be horrific to outsiders to protect the tribe or group. Not out of malice or evil, but with a cruel, predatory cunning and ferocity.

The idea of a god not being actually there and yet the paladin gains powers makes me think: What if... the powers come from a sort of mage awakening ritual that they unknowingly (or perhaps knowingly?) pass as paladinship? As in, they accidentally found a way to turn normal people into magic wielding people (a rather limited type of course, as these people think they're receiving powers from their god and as such their essence would mimic it to a tea, rather than develop its own style of expression) through excrutiatingly long and painful (both physically and mentally) tests that could very well end up in death or a situation that made you wish you were death. The oath would be this mental lock that keeps your powers flowing and maybe like Tobey's Spiderman, your powers don't disappear once broken but is just a mental thing that you would have to overcome.

Way I usually do it: Good doctrines: Destroy the unholy, sanctify the profane, uphold the honor of one's allies, always engage in battle if there is to be clashing steel, suffer no insult or slight unreprised, defend those in need to the death. Bad doctrines: Burn away all that is impure or violates the natural order, never turn from any challenge or battle, there is only the eternal war against the encroaching darkness of the void and all else must be fed to the engines of that war if called to do so, suffer not the heretic to live, suffer no demon to live, live only to serve and die. Short version: Suffering is the purest form of worship, and there is no greater ideal than to die in service to the Order's will. Also, regarding sci-fi, the Emperor's Champion is definitely the epitome of this concept.

The paladin who does blood rituals, not nessesary through kiling people , seems interesting. I know what in scifi canidates for gods are. AIs or engeneers possibly. Root from person of interest is an interesting paladin. The series has scifi elements like a benevolent super AI later. And she is a fanatic believer in "the maschine" and the maschine rders her around while the team maschine teaches her humanity. And the maschine sees everyhing everywhere and guides root. But she got that position because she fully believes in the maschine and staying alive in "her" memory. And the maschine chooses her voice. Or a paladin with a bloody past, who was an antisocial assasin and became an emotional hero. People who get directions from super AIs to help them out must count as paladins.

How about paladins of the abstract ideas. Their gods are metaphysical such as love, hate, thoughts, dreams. And they can be influenced by such things. Templars may no even follow a religion but a set of ideals such as the assassins from assisins creed (though it doesnt have heavy religous over tones ) communist templars capitalist templars etc.*cough deus vult cough* And as for champions they can be a vessel through which a deity or idea projects their power onto the world and the "champion" is being dragged along for thr ride whether or not they want that.

Personally, I don't like the idea of evil paladins. There is an old video by the spoonyone (back when he actually made videos) where he shows off one of the original dnd antipaladin sections and the writer of the section basically stated that "you really shouldn't do this. Just let good have this one class." (paraphrased). I kind of agree, I mean the paladin is kind of to lawful good as the thief is to chaotic X. That is not to say that paladins can never be the villain just that I don't think they should be evil. A villain paladin should just be too extreme in their beliefs to really be doing good (shoplifters must be executed publicly on the spot rather than simply forced to pay a fine or work off a debt kind of deal). I also don't mind all paladins having healing but I do like the idea that all religions should have their own paladins (I'm not a huge fan of flatly evil religions or flatly evil powers but I'm somewhat willing to let that slide). Different equipment sets is an interesting idea but for the sake of classes in dnd/pathfinder I don't know how easily that could be done (or maybe it would just be a bit easier to play a ranger or druid and flavor it as a paladin of nature as an example). Rest of the video I don't really have anything to say about.

Kicked the shit out of my arguement, paladins in history are a silly silly lot. I have just known that as the distinction between Clerics/Priests with a pointy stick and a Paladin: Paladin's power came from faith in their own will, a profound sense of civil responsibilty, not a diety pointing them around, whether or not they were aware of the metaphysics.

@Ethan RUMLEY Dude... Are you a Paladin? Cuz holy shit. You've just summoned a diety. THE BURGERLORD
@TheBurgerkrieg6 жыл бұрын
@@ethanrumley746 No. Historical paladins were a group of warriors that served Charlemagne. They were basically the continental Knights of the Round Table. Though they were devout Christians, they were not even a religious order. The image of the paladin as a holy warrior springs entirely from tabletop gaming. Not saying the way you choose to see is illegitimate, just that this is 100% a personal thing for which there objectively no right answer, on account of it being fiction.
