I actually think the best class for a European Monk would be a wizard. Or whatever the sort of learned magical caster you want. It fits into the idea of a person who pours over books and scripts for years and years. Probably best for a monk of a god of knowledge/arcane.

In my experience, monks (in christianity at least) were the ones doing most of the stuff that could be described as adventuring. While the main part of the monastical class stayed in their monasteries and were the more reclusive type, most historical missionaries, inquisitors and paladins were monks or part of a monastic order. Celtic monks lead most of the missions in Europe in the early middle ages (e. g. Columban the Younger, who introduced monastical life to mainland Europe), while Franciscans, Dominicans and Jesuits lead the missions in the Americas. Many inquisitors were part of monastic orders (e. g. Torquemada, head of the Spanish Inquisition and Dominican friar) and the archetype of paladins are based on the military orders, such as the Hospitaller or Teutonic knights, who initially provided provided protection to Pilgrims to the holy land. Priests, because they had an active duty to their community as, well, the priest of a church, were tied to their place of residence. What system to use instead, then? I would propose splitting the "divine" classes into two: one more focused on fighting and one more focused on interpersonal activities. Both utilize some kind of divine power. The fighting class for me would be the paladin, who on the one hand can be the protector of his religion, or on the other hand could be a crusader focused on the expansion of his religion through force. The talking class could be some kind of missionary, for lack of a better name, who, on the one hand tries to lead through good example, heals people and so on, and on the other hand could be an inquisitor focused on rooting out any kind of heresy and doing this through coercion, interrogation and intimidation and also investigative work. I'd say this gives some clear guidelines for people to play with while also providing enough freedom to fine tune to your preference. Everything else could, in my opinion, be achieved through multi-classing or tweaking the necessary rules a bit.

I struggled with this sort of split in my RPG I'm making, because in this world, tho there are sort of Lovecraftian supernatural deities, people don't really know anything about them, and priests are like real world priests, in that they don't directly talk to their gods, or have magic powers or anything. (Tho some people do get visions, that is more a "they are born that way" thing, and depending on the visions some churches may view them as prophets, or their equivalent of the antichrist) I decided to make being a clergy member a background, not a character class. So a clergy-ranger could be one of those missionaries who go to uncharted lands to convert the natives, or just to bring them medicine. A clergy-fighter would be a templar archetype. A clergy-wizard would be the equivalent of the medieval monks who spent a lot of time studying and advancing the natural sciences. (since magic is pretty scientific in this world)

Inquisitor just reminds me of the Warhammer 40,000 version of Inquisitors, in all honesty. Which are among my favourite factions in 40k. It's actually quite a secular organisation in the Imperium and is an utter hodge podge of differing ideologies and methodologies. Some Inquisitors dislike the Ecclisarchy such as the awesome Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and some factions of the Inquisition such as the Seculous Attendous outright undermine the Ecclisarchy (which my Inquisitor Azakir Halgriv of the Ordo Xenos and his master and his master's master is/was a part of of my Rogue Trader campaign) The Ecclisarchy have their own version of the Inquisition which butts heads with the Inquisition proper sometimes, especially the more pragmatic secular minded Inquisitors.
@AeneasGemini3 жыл бұрын
Well the main concern of the inquisition is to keep chaos at bay, not preserve worship of the Emperor. It's also not surprising in a bureaucratic mess like the Imperium that everything is a constant shifting sea of agendas

You subversion in this video nearly feels like a life lesson. It may be cause this is new to me, and I didn't have the time to deeply think it through yet, but the Priest/Monk/Inquisitor/(regular believer) model feels very accurate in describing different members of an ideology.

OK, leaning into the idea of monks giving power to their deity rather than being granted it, perhaps their usefulness as an adventurer can come from that. Most of the time, their devotion is dedicated to feeding their God, but if they're pushed, they can use the techniques they have learned to draw power from themselves, but rather than directing it to their God, they can pour it into something more directly useful. Perhaps a main part of their powerset is buffing their allies, or simply overloading their opponents with I'll suited power. I think you could do a lot of interesting things with this idea of monks being exemplary worshipers, and being able to translate that talent towards combat worshiping.

Sounds about right. Whenever I play a priest (rarely, not my style, but anyways), I tend to play my character in a way that more resembles a missionary, not necessarily a proselytiser. Rather than focus on converting people/npcs to whatever religion my character is devoted to, I'd instead see to helping those people see the good of my god through particular deeds that help them in their daily life by including aspects of the religion in question. For instance, if my character is devoted to a god of war, he would go to a village and help train a militia to defend it against bandits, and enhance that training with a bit of praying. If he was devoted to a god of nature, then he'd go to farms to help improve harvests, again, with prayer, and a bit of extra fertiliser. However, in my opinion, the priest shouldn't just go anywhere to carry out these things, but instead focus on locations that actually need their intervention. Villages located in the lawless frontier, farms suffering from draught, etc.

sort of off topic question, i'm i guess having "trouble" making a character, i feel they're too close mechanically to another, both a part of musketeer inspired "branches" the most elite forces in their respective countries,both used for police work and military, i mean, hell, both chars good at hand to hand, swords and guns, both suffering in the social department to avoid any mary-sue-ing,(tho i think i can make their personalities different enough.) the biggest difference is one is a space setting where nothing larger than a shortsword would really be used, and the other fantasy where they're still using muzzle loaders. so, the question is: for you people, whoever reads this, how close to another character,is too close in your opinion? thoughts anyone?
