There is no doubt that US aircraft carriers are and will remain the most powerful in the world. China, with its strong shipbuilding and economy, will have aircraft carriers second only to the US

The u s has had almost a century of aircraft carrier experience. Building a ship is one thing. But perfecting everything on one is a different story. The amount of aircraft on American carriers alone would b another thing China will have figure out. They will eventually. But as far as experience they could never catch up. @abelincoln6785 Жыл бұрын
Retired US Navy officer here. Carriers are the battleships of ww2. Sorry but they are much easier to destroy and knock out that we think. Modern missile technology and stand off weapons as well as underwater threats, drone swarms and overwhelming air attack taken together will make them obsolete. Suffer a catapult or power casualty during an engagement and its all over. We almost lost two carrier off Vietnam due to our own unforced errors - not attacks. There is a damn good reason we never sail a carrier into the Persian Gulf. Think it is hard to put down a carrier? - I give you the USS Bonham Richard. Destroyed because of a single fire dockside. We thought the Titanic was unsinkable too. Carriers cannot deal with an overwhelming threat coming from land.

The construction of China's aircraft carrier is still in its infancy. The main task of China's aircraft carrier in the foreseeable future is to ensure the safety of China's surrounding areas (including China's East China Sea, Taiwan Strait and South China Sea). However, when U.S. aircraft carriers and Chinese aircraft carriers are fighting around China, they must always be aware of the fact that China's DF-21D and DF-26B missiles will cooperate with Chinese aircraft carriers. In other words, 2500KM westward, including Guam, is covered by Chinese missiles.

USAF 2W2 then 2W1 here. We can squib and jam IFA the DF series BMs. They aren't a threat to the carriers. This is why we'll continue to operate in the Indo-pacific (which includes SChina Sea), Pacific and Indian ocean. We also have 8 of our 14 Ohio-class subs within the Indo-pacific, Taiwan Straight, Sea of Japan and SChina Sea. A full compliment would eliminate about 440-700 million people from those 8. This is due to China's population being extremely dense and congested into a small area. And no, as a nuke troop, we would not bat an eye at that loss. Zero hesitation. China doesn't benefit like the US does with population sprawl. They're also terrified of a reprisal. This is why they will never act and will never strike.

I feel the age of supremacy of the mega carrier is drawing to an end - with new hypersonic missiles, autonomous swarm weapons and particularly dangerous undersea robotic weapons, these 100,000 ton giants are huge targets and will be very difficult to defend. They need to develop small subs that can surface and launch 1-2 autonomous attack drones, then submerge. Survivability and redundancy will be the key winning the battle space in the second part of this century.

Carriers are for projecting power internationally, they are tools of diplomacy and intimidation more than for peer-to-peer war. Any fool who thinks the US will rush carriers into harm's way is just that - a fool. We will neutralize enemy defenses with, oh say about 154 cruise missiles from former USS Ohio-class boomers, B2s, etc. Then carriers will support the ground campaign. The US will NOT risk a carrier to defend Taiwaan, for example, the US public will not tolerate that.

The fact that the US is building more aircraft carriers instead of just refitting/overhauling existing ones by gutting it is concerning. The Nimitz class looks like it's good enough to still be in use for another 30-40 years, and that could be possible by gutting the interior and replacing the propulsion with a smaller, more efficient version of the A1B could be a better investment, as far as improved nuclear power for non-military use is concerned, like powerplants for generating power to replace coal reactors. If they need to increase the cooling system with larger pipes/electrical wiring, they could just drill holes and reduce crew requirements, while turning those rooms into pipeline areas. It would improve efficiency, like how the Ford-class was supposed to have 4,000 crew instead of 5,000. Maybe expanding the island and ripping out the steam catapult + system and replacing with EMALS after they actually manage to fix the system could work as well, at least since the Nimitz has working elevators so there's no need to fix those (just drilling more holes and copying/pasting exact copies of Nimitz carrier elevators could also actually work, instead of trying to redesign one and end up with a huge mess. Literally, if they can get creative, they can just add every feature that the Ford is supposed to have for half the price, and the rest of the money could actually be spent on supporting homeless Veterans or Veterans who need support. Also, cost overruns are the main reason that the ships are 2-3 times more expensive than projected, and stopping that by forcing these companies to work with the money given for once could make them do something, even if they have to get their materials from other countries that have cheaper costs.
@eduanstander76133 жыл бұрын
I see youre approach but look at it this way if the USA refitted Nimitz aircraft carriers and a war broke out they don't have carriers which is the majority of their might. The Nimitz classes are also smaller than the fords and the fords are designed around their systems like the new electromagnetic catapult. It is all just about one upping previous iterations and improving on the last
@cosplayshop3 жыл бұрын
Actually, refitting and overhauling existing ship cost more money than building a new one, just like getting a car, would you buy a new car rather than keep fixing your 30-40 years old one? At what point it become cost prohibited Also, Naval architecture are specific for each design, if you need to add something new, you will need to redesign the layout of the entire craft, because when you add and remove stuff, you disturbed the buoyance and balance of the vessel. In commercial vessel, this is not a problem because ship usually comes with a lot of empty bulkhead, so you can add or remove stuff at will by balancing these bulkhead compartment, but in Military Vessel, empty spaces are few and far between, you don't get the same leeway you have in a commercial vessel.

Nimitz class carriers will in fact be in use for another 40 years or so. Each carrier has a 50 year life span which includes a mid-life refueling and overhaul. USS Nimitz is scheduled for Decommissioning by 2025(53 years after launch), George H. W. Bush should be in service until the late 2050's.

@@williamwongkimping3998 Its been a long time since the US lost a carrier in combat. Many carriers have broken the backs of nations. Its easy to get cocky about military tech if the tech is never used. You could always use your carriers against North Korea and gain favor with the rest of the world. At least that will let you know what problems are in the carrier design.
@robwyyi2 жыл бұрын
Problem with carrier is expenses for it. Not the cost of building it but it’s is rather large. Examining Soviet now Russian carriers and its existence gives a ideal how difficult it is for a nation to have a carrier program. Program I say because a infrastructure is needed. First in the program is having a dry dock to build and retrofit carrier. Carriers like all boat needs lots of care. This brings why Russia is in a difficult situation. Their dry dock for carriers is in a another nation, Ukraine Mykolaev. On the side note, one objective Russia will likely not accomplish. With the dry dock skilled labor must be sustained. Building and retrofitting carriers. The thing about labor for carriers or in general is each ship has its one specialized skilled labor. With the dry dock sub group of industrial plants are needed. From iron works, rope manufacturing, modern electronics etc. I think you get the ideal of supporting plants. This is just the ship it self. One that is even greater is aircraft. But specialized a/c, that can land and launch from a ship. This can be explain by the f16 & f18 program. F16 was originally a Naval a/c and f18 Air Force. The end it switched branches. It turned out the f18 could manage heavier landing gear and f16 unable to fit a heavier landing gear for carrier landing. Naval aviation requires many more adaptation verse land based a/c. Which explains the programs magnitude of program needs. Now you need the pilots. Which due to landing on carriers add additional or rather more then double the time to make a naval aviator. All this adds up to a extensive programs and infrastructure to maintain a carrier program. Which most nations need to be a rather large economy to sustain a carrier program. Not many nations can do this or afford to. Using Russian example is once they built their carrier due to lack of naval aviation program the carrier never made it out to deployment for lack of a/c. India and China is possible to have carrier program but both have long ways to sustain it.

Building them and using them in combat is two entirely different matters. China is at least 40 years behind the U.S in combat ready aircraft carriers. U.K could not even effectively use one during the Falklands war, they had limited range and could not stay on station for extended combat. Russia cannot even get one out of port. China has almost zero overseas bases, they have no friends in the world.
@billygraham21322 жыл бұрын
Carriers are for power projection against non-peer countries. And you are correct in pointing out the enormous training and logistical chain required to support these. The US cut it's teeth using multiple carriers in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq, Afgjhanistan and then Iraq again. And we have a completely unmatched global support program. Russia has ONE overseas port; in Syria. China has none, but is pumping money into Africa. I believe during the next 40 years NATO/China/Russia will have perfected hypersonic swarm weapons that will make the world a very dangerous place for carriers. Except for beating up on lesser opponents; this is how the US has used carriers since Midway.

It all depends on what the strategic uses of the aircraft carrier are, China seems to be solely focused on the Pacific and Indian and in this case they don't need many ports to replenish as Pakistan, North Korea and the few African bases are enough, further deployments would be hard and would require st sea replenishment by auxillaries
