When I was found to be a type 2 diabetic, my A1C level was 17! I was admitted to the hospital that night and during the middle of the night my blood sugar hit 861 !!!!! I was not overweight and I had a very physical job, that was very high stress. I changed my lifestyle, lost my job due to the doctor saying that “I was done working and he would not release me back to work. I made changes to my diet and sought help for my panic attacks. My A1C is now 5.1, but I am now slightly overweight, but I sure feel better. I almost died that first night at the hospital because of my unbelievably high blood sugar level. I’m so thankful to just be alive, I’m grateful for each day that I have. Oddly, no one else in my family has a history of diabetes. I’m just glad to be here.

When you make these kinds of changes, you have to learn to like it, otherwise it’s stressful, which is also bad for you. You don’t need an a1c of 4 something, that’s where my journey took me. Diabetics don't need to lose their vision, kidney function or their legs. I've been a Type 1 diabetic for well over 50 years. I was diagnosed back in 1968. I've had some great doctors and I have devoted a lot of time and energy learning about the disease and controlling my blood glucose levels using a combination of insulin and diet. And, guess what? I still have my vision, kidney function and my legs. It takes a lot of time and effort but if you manage the disease you can live into your late 70s like me. Good luck.

Yay! Glad to see this. Have you heard of the Glucose Goddess? She goes a step further and suggests to eat the fibrous veggies first, then the protein and fat, and then the carb/sugar last, and that will prevent insulin spikes. Apparently there are studies of people eating exactly the same foods but one group eating in that order and the other group eating however they want, and the ones eating the veggies first and carbs last have the least insulin spikes. The fibrous veggies sort of create a layer that buffers the sugars from entering the system too fast. (My layperson description😅) Like you, she also says to have protein or fiber with the carbs (if you can't separate them), or do a little mini salad first. And another trick is to mix 1T apple cider vinegar into a glass of water 20 minutes before the meal... I forget what the action of the ACV is, but anyway... When I heard this concept, it made so much sense to me because for years, I've had a problem where I get what I call a carb/ adrenaline rush if I have certain carbs on an empty stomach. It often snowballed into an anxiety attack, which sucks. My A1C is creeping up so I need to keep up these habits and exercise more, and work on my sweet tooth. Thanks for the great tips, doc!

I disagree. Diabetes is caused by long term consumption of wheat. Stay away from bread even if its wholemeal bread. The gluten and gliadin in wheat slowly destroys the beta cells in your pancreas over time to cause diabetes. I have been a Type 2 diabetic for the past 27 years and all of the 7 siblings including my parents became diabetic as they were consuming the Indian Chapatti bread made from wheat. Besides sugar, wheat is one of the worst foods to put in your mouth. The problem is that the wheat plant has been hybridized. The original wheat plant has 4 grams of gluten but the hybridized one has 20 grams of gluten. Its a joke that the scientist who hybridized wheat was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Bread also causes one to lose teeth. There are 5 types of fungus in wheat with the black fungus being deadly and daily consumption of wheat even causes the sickness schizophrenia. A diabetic who has lost a leg and still consumes bread will lose the other leg and may have to undergo kidney dialysis, become blind and be bound to the wheelchair for the rest of his life. Stay away from a high carbohydrate diet, rice, sugar and exercise daily to be healthy. I am surviving on a 80% carnivore and 20% food from lentils, nuts and seeds which have been soaked overnight to remove the phytic acid and pressure cooked. A diabetic must avoid fruits as the sugar fructose in fruits will cause affect the mitochondria and cause inflammation in the body.

Bread typically contains high fructose corn sugar and soybean oil as well. a fifty pound sack of vital wheat gluten is also added to the mix. the processed white flour is steaming when loaded in to the truck container, causing mold to form on the top of the container. time is money so it may not get cleaned. not sure what chemicals are used to kill the mold.

Enjoyed your video! Thank you, Dr. I was just diagnosed diabetic because my blood test showed 150 glucose and an A1C of 6.7. I was immediately prescribed metformin, which a nurse practioner said I needed to start taking. A month later and I still haven't started it. I don't crave or eat sweets but I do eat foods that are evidently high in carbohydrates, so I'm working on this. I like your soleus exercise a lot and will start doing that one. Question: When I met with my doctor after the diagnosis, he said that age needs to be factored in as well -- that the older we get, the more that slightly higher A1C and glucose levels are acceptable. Have you heard this before? Thanks!

We used to have a doctor who wanted us to take statins and diabetes meds, but he was fat and looked so unhealthy. We have since switched to doctors who do listen to us and are not pushy. We have also taken better control of our own lives by watching videos like this. I recently stopped snacking and eating sugars, and finding myself losing about a pound per week and feeling better for it.

Many of us, who were in a bad way with chronic health problems, have gone home and thrown away most (95%) of the carbs in their home and do eat mostly meat, eggs, and select vegetables. I was strict keto for 5 years before it was a fad. As a result I developed slightly high fasting glucose. Low testosterone and my competitive running suffered. I looked like I lived in a concentration camp. I changed to 250 grams of healthy carbs. 200 grams of protein and 30 grams of fat. Very low sat fat. After going to higher carbs everything improved greatly. And I now enjoy food again.

I was always at 7.+ . I got tired of it and the doctor not doing anything. Them hospital diabetes education was all about the American Diabetes Association diet. I did my own research and testing and I went on a carnivore diet and limited myself to 20grams of carbs per meal. The hospital diet had me on 72 grams per meal. As a result I dropped my A1C to 5.2 all vitals including cholesterol were in the green. Currently I am a mix of low carb veggies and meats and maintaining my levels. Never felt better. I also found that a protein shake would cause a reverse spike and maintain my low levels in the event I ate something Iwas not aware would spike me while out with friends.

9:28 “The problem with Healthcare is we don’t have Healthcare, we have Disease Management.” As you mentioned, our General Practitioners are required by the company they work under (big conglomerates) to produce. Seems if you develop a “disease” or are “pre”something they then send you on to a Specialist in that field (endocrinologist for Diabetes Management) or offer a Nutritionist. Then there are those patients/people/us “that have ears” but don’t listen and take this knowledge to heart and make needed changes to improve their lives. Living to 100 is possible but who wants to live blind, unable to walk, cardiac problems, on kidney dialysis, dementia (your brain needs oxygen but your heart isn’t working well)- just constantly sick due to an illness that can be controlled (hopefully even resolved) through diet and exercise. Thank you for taking the time to educate the people (us). May we have ears to hear and heart to apply the knowledge you are sharing.

Everyone should know that it's inappropriate to ask someone how they lost their leg, why they're in a wheelchair, or any similar question. Most people like to be seen as people, not as people with disabilities. In addition, many of them have experienced trauma, and they don't want to relive it in order to satisfy your curiosity. This is basic etiquette. Don't ask personal questions.

@@AdamJStoryDC No, one shouldn't go up to someone with a disability, no matter how young or old the person is, and ask personal questions that are none of their business. It has absolutely nothing to do with lying to oneself. I'm sorry your mother didn't teach you that when you were a child.
