I have sleep apnea but deal with it by sleeping on my side. I also have tinnitus (most annoying when it is quiet). So, I sleep on my side with an earpiece in my ear listening to so many different things with the volume down quite low (Harry Potter Audiobooks, NCIS episodes, Podcasts, etc.) . Loud enough to hear, but quiet enough to ignore. When I roll over to my other side, I generally wake up for a moment. Shift my pillows and my earpiece and quickly fall back asleep. This has worked (mostly) for 25 years.

You're a nice guy and all, but the brachial artery runs thru the antecubital area, not the side of the arm. It is where you place your stethoscope when you are using a manual cuff, over the brachial artery at the antecubital area of the arm, not the side of the arm. Most physicians have the majority of their cuffs serving the right arm, not the left, it just doesn't matter. Over the past 46 years, I have never heard a difference in B/P if their thin sleeve is down, because when you pull it up it can bind the upper arm constricting blood flow, even if just a little, the top of the arm, making the B/P invalid. Never over a sweater or jacket, if needed they take their arm out of the sleeve. You are a sweet guy

Absolutely Excellent Video! The doctors offices are notoriously wrong taking blood pressure. Many of the mistakes you mentioned have happened to me in doctors offices. The only way I can convince them that I don’t have high blood pressure is to show them the numbers I’ve taken at home.

wow wow wow, all this time I've been putting the cuff arrow on the TOP of my arm where I can see the vein nurses draw blood from and NOT on the side like you showed. Also looking at the markings on my cuff min and max, I'm clearly way beyond the max size.

I just drove 1 hour to my local hospital. My BP was 180. They made me rest for 5 minutes. It went to 160. 5 minutes later it was 155. I just did it at home following your advice... 155. The doctor prescribed some pills.

I think the length of the cuff could also be an issue. My arms are well within the diameter requirements for my cuff, but I'm pretty close to the limit in terms of being able to accommodate the 1/2 inch gap at the elbow without pushing the cuff up too hard into my armpit. And I'm about 5-9/+1 ape, so there are plenty of people with shorter upper arms that would be fine on diameter.

Adam, Pleas tell us WHY you say these things, Like the Cuff over the clothing? You need to explain in more detail about how it is just a bladder that inflates. You need to tell why most automated cheap machines are 20 points off. I work in EMS had people argue with me that my $45K Cardiac monitor is wrong and their $29 cuff from Rite Aid is correct.

Do not walk immediately after a meal. For the same reason we wait an hour after eating before swimming, we wait to exercise. Blood is directed to stomach for digestion and there may not be adequate circulation to the extremities and you could cramp up. I like to wait about 40 minutes to start my walk.

At 72 I decided to find myself a doctor. Wasn't easy. Found a "move in" that was building a practice. She's put me through every test Medicare pays for. First rattle out of the box was scrips for BP meds and statins. I started keeping track of my BP twice a day. I'm consistently below 130 over 60s. I've said no to the meds. I do a healthier diet and a little exercise now. Last time I was in, she said "It's been 6 months. We need to schedule you for another colonoscopy." I hope she didn't take offense when I laughed in her face.

Another thing that's kinda related to the last point, but when taking your BP at home, it is a good practice to take three readings a couple of minutes apart and then average them. You'll often find your subsequent readings will have a dropping tendency because you can get white coat syndrome (anxiety) even at home. Thankfully, more and more doctors are now starting to rely on pacient's own readings at home, as they should (provided your BP meter is calibrated properly, but that's easily tested by just taking it with you on your next checkup). Also, when it comes to the talking, it's not so much about not being calm when talking while taking your reading, but the main issue and the reason why you'll get a wrong reading while talking is because blood pressure measurement relies on sound, or rather more specifically, on vibrations. There's a sensor in the machine that's "listening" to the sound of the blood in your artery, detecting the point where it disappears/appears. So if you're talking while that's going on, the sound of your voice (the vibrations it causes) will interfere with this reading and make it inaccurate. And one other thing that's a bit unfortunate - all of the digital meters, regardless of brand or calibration, tend to read a bit higher. Even those used by doctors and in hospitals. Every single time a nurse verified my BP the "old fashioned" way with manual BP meter and stethoscope to listen for the artery sounds, it was a bit lower than what a digital meter was reading. Even with highly experienced cardiology experts where "user error" was pretty much out of the question. But, I mean, the fact that we can now check our BP at home at any moment and quite accurately still makes the technology excellent anyway :)

Your videos are helping me so much. At 81, with blood pressure that rises intermittently, very high, and some scan revealed plaque they term very high, but also a person who is extremely allergic with reactions to chemical prescriptions, I'm a walking dilemma that frustrates my doctors. And I take zero prescriptions. So, my aging world is consumed with daily working at gaining level ground. And I'm doing it. But, it's expensive. The most important take away from your video is the stress level cause and effect. Yesterday, I discovered something about that. It was a very happy day with family and friends, and i forgot to take any of it but the morning pill of natural ingredients. When I got home, and took my BP, it was not extremely high. So I made a choice, but did it prayerfully, not to take any of it for the night. In a little while, I asked for help to find something on YT about a Scripture that came to mind. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and a sound mind." And then, I found your video on stress and blood pressure. I'm going forward with those words and your many helpful videos, to change my last years from fear, to a better way in my current active participation to best this situation and live the best of years left. And in the process save about $200.00 a month in spending on nutritional aids. Bless you Dr. Story, and thank you for such concise and informative videos.

Those machines they use at the Dr.'s office are a joke, I got a reading of 170+systolic (don't remember diastolic) first time and I knew better. She took it again and within a minute she got 150 something. The Dr. came in and I told her I know my BP is not that high, she did it manually and got 134 !!! Can you imagine someone coming in and getting those false readings, she would've prescribed those poison pills that the person didn't even need. That's why everyone should have a BP monitor at home and check your BP regularly !!

Adam ! My favorite funny health doctor! A subscriber of yours a long time, 71 years old a off& on cyclist, and out of shape. I was excited to see you posted this video this morning as for a couple years I've been taking my blood pressure almost every morning. However the one I've been using is not the upper arm type that I also have that the VA gave me, but the smaller wrist CVS pharmacy one that also will give you an off beat symbol as after my vaccine I was diagnosed with A-fib, but don't seem to have that problem anymore. So you didn't talk about the wrist band type, can you do one on those? Thank you for everything Adam. Joe. Lake Havasu, Arizona.

This is comically bad. Some info is ok but the wrist bp is awful, rolling your sleeve up under your armpit is also horrendous because you just created a tourniquet. The pressure is going to be nuts. The nurses are asking you questions because they have 15 other patients behind you that are pissed off because their appointment was an hour ago and we’re trying to make sure you have a nice room and you went peepee because your chiropractor told you so but I have a patient who just was just adjusted on her neck and now is having a stroke real story it’s happened multiple times, but please let me darken the room. Make sure you go to the bathroom. Make sure your legs are comfortable so I can take your one blood pressure reading. Oh and make sure that I see you at your appointment time and you’re out of the office in under 30 minutes.
