Oftentimes, yes. I have a Westwood Village Rotary friend who owned 50 acres in the Golden Trout Wilderness Area. Also, my family owned acreage later traded with the Sam Houston National Forest that many thought was actually part of the National Forest.

The National Forest System was created by the federal government purchasing private land (this was on the east coast, I think the first National Forest was in Virginia). As they started a forest, it was many disconnected pieces of land. Some parcels they were just not able to purchase (they were not permitted to take it by eminent domain). So you get some private property surrounded by National Forest. The government sometimes will also swap land with private landowners with the goal of consolidating land holdings into contiguous parcels. When they do that, things can get confusing. One year you may be hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing on a National Forest, and the next year you may be cited for trespassing at the same location. Because of this, you need to understand how the forest boundaries are marked. But this also introduces another problem . . . private landowners adjacent to National Forests remarking the boundaries to make part of the forest appear to be their private property. The forest service has to regularly budget for surveyors to go out and "recover" forest boundaries.

Yes, there are some homes on on private property that abuts national forest, I have a friend in Bellemont Arizona who has property like that. Also, there are national forest leases. I have a friend in Wyoming who has a cabin in the Bighorn National forest and the lease has been in her family for generations. And lastly, I have seen Cattle Camps for ranchers who bring have permits to graze their cattle in national forest. In general, you can not buy land and build in a national forest today. But many of the homes in national forest are on leases the families have passed down from one generation to the next.

Hi we have National Parks in the UK that have market towns and villages as well as farms in them as the idea of preserving the landscape came when cities began to expand rapidly. The need to preserve some of the features of the wider landscape was thought to be important enough to have protective legislation, limiting development and opening up tracts of land for those in cities to be able to access. So with existing market towns and other development already there the restrictions were applied from the date of creation of the parks. Similarly with Forests, development and tree felling began to be much more restrictive and controlled for wildlife and Natural features to be preserved. I think this was happening at the same time in America and some other countries. Hope this was informative for you

I spent many years performing Federal Govt. Certification testing for emergency vehicles ( mostly ambulances). UNless you are familiar with this process you probably would not believe what all is done to test ambulance ( prototypes, not individual) before they are put into service. They are baked, frozen, crushed, pulled apart with winches and rams. Then overloaded and driven through hell. We used the North Georgia Mountains and their many fire and logging roads for off road testing. Gradient climbing and braking... even water fording. ( crossing the Chattahoochee River headwaters). You can look up " Federal Ambulance certification specifications KKK 1822 -( D,E or F for an 2002?)"

Most national forests have small privately owned land inside the boundaries . This land would have been privately owned before national forest designation . Many forests in Colorado all have small chunks of land inside their boundaries . My grandparents , in 1938 petitioned for some 99 year lease lots in the White River forest , still held today , and will begin to renegotiate in 2035 or so , to determine a new lease rate !

We get back there about a mile down this hardly traceable path and saw a clearing with a bunch of shit all over the place and a lean to. Private lands within a national forest’s boundary result from a few things I can think of off hand. Homesteading was allowed in the western US from the 1860’s through the early years of the 20th century. In addition, the 1872 mining law allowed for a miner to claim public land for the purpose of exploring for minerals. Settlers mostly wanted to live, farm, and trade on somewhat level, accessible land. In the mountain west, that means river valleys and low elevation meadows. Generally speaking, when the US government first started reserving land for public use, the unclaimed land was mountainous and forested or it was relatively flat sage brushy or desert ground. In time the forested ground became the responsibility of the US Forest Service and the flat ground became the responsibility of the Bureau of Land Management. Both homesteaders and miners had to “prove up” their claim. Homesteaders had to build a small home, put a specific number of acres to agricultural use, and live on the land for a specific number of years. Miners had to prove that the claim produced enough mineral for a “reasonable man” to mine it for a living. The homesteader or miner who wanted ownership of their claimed land would apply for a patent. If their claim was proven true, they could get ownership of the land through the patent provided by the government. The mining and homesteading laws were amended years ago. We can no longer claim homesteads or get patents for mining claims. What I wrote is generally true west of the Mississippi River. Back East some lands ended up the responsibility of the US Forest Service for other reasons. Examples: The Wayne National Forest in Ohio and the Mark Twain NF in Missouri. I don’t know those reasons.

Yes , many kept their properties inside the National Forest as long as someone lived on it. But probably like the property owners who lost their land in the GSMNP they will also lose it as soon as no one lives on it or they have a lease that will expire. Lots of people still live in the Cherokee National Forest as well.

In Sedona Az you will see homes in the National Forest. On a pink jeep tour the guide told us that they claimed the land under The Homesteaders Act up into the 1970's. They have to be totally off grid and can only pass their land to descendants. The land was not officially their's until they lived on it for a certain time period.

Wind is fine. I’m not a big opposer to the wind. It adds authenticity.

Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas. Has a city in the middle of it . I live on the outer edge of the park. There is a family cemetery in the park also . I found recently.

Hi Dave, just listening to the wind in the pines reminded me of when I lived in New Hampshire. I was caretaker for a place called "Whispering Pines", when all is quiet that's all you can hear, especially at night it would lull you to sleep. It's all you could hear in the video and it was most enjoyable. Nice camp site looks like you guys have the place pretty much to yourselves. Lefty knows exactly what your going to do. He's got you pegged. Stay safe to all...
