I’ve worked in law enforcement in the United States for several years now as a patrolman and patrol supervisor. I’ve responded to hundreds of burglaries and approved hundreds of burglary reports and I’ve never responded to a burglary where a large/protective/aggressive dog was present. I’ve responded to dozens of burglaries that have had alarms, security cameras, and “intruders will be shot” signs though. Not that security cameras and alarms aren’t a good deterrent as well (I have them installed on my house) but a guard dog seems to be what deters burglars the most. I’ve talked to several other LEOs about this, some with over twenty years experience, and I’ve only met one guy who has responded to a burglary where a large guard dog had been harmed by a burglar. So no deterrent is 100% but a guard dog seems to have the highest percentage from what I’ve seen.

See thing is you can see if someone comes in and out so know not in can't get shot, but if a guard dog there you don't know where they are located and some can kill you with one bite, Let alone good guard dogs will fight even if they are dying from say a gun shot wound. I'll prefer personally be shot than have my French Mastiff attack me

A couple of big dogs bowls in a prominent place works well also. Burglars are looking for an easy mark and will be deterred by just the idea of a large dog in the home. If you have a Rottweiler to go with those bowls it's even better

I’ve owned 2 bullmastiffs, and one thing that always stands out in terms of guarding is with my first one. I had a friend over and we were running around and I said to my dog something along the lines of “help keep her away from me!”, and although she’d never been taught that, immediately she would not let my friend near me until I called her off. She stood in front of me and barked whenever my friend tried to come closer, and she didn’t bark often. I was only a teenager at the time and didn’t realize that was something she would actually do, but now as a young adult with my current bullmastiff I know that they are guardians and I have to have control 100% of the time.

My cane corso rescue puppy essentially new what I wanted when I told her to go get my cat in a play sense having never been taught at like 3 months old. It's amazing how intelligent some of the mastiff breeds are. Sheoherd types and border collies get all the fame for that. But I'd wager some of these mastiff types are more intelligent albeit a little more independent in certain senses.

My family has always been a Doberman family. We've never owned more than 1, but we ❤ Dobbies. We currently have a 4 year old female Goliath sized named Josie (by her breeder) & we got her when she was 2 years old & at below what an adult normally despite her parents being champions. Apparently, the money for her was money for dog food. 😂

I do wish Boxers got more recognition for their natural protective instincts. I had a girl that was so alert and ready to go into protection mode if I ever expressed to her that I felt threatened or unsure. The perfect balance between being a gentle family companion but also had the natural skills to be able to read you and take action.

I have PTSD and having an alert and slightly aloof dog has been a game changer. I'm researching the right dog to get when he gets old. Boerboel is at the top of the list right now and Johnson's American Bulldog is second. This is going to be ten or so years from now so there's plenty of time.

The english mastiff is indeed.a perfect guardian especially with children.When my daughter was young she was watched over by an english mastiff.Cajun also walked daily to the bus stop and visited the youngster.Cajuns incredible bond with my daughter fueled her calm but vigilant guarding.Later came our beloved Tigger a bullmastiff.Tigger shared the calm vigilant guarding.I agree with you completely about the deterring factor these beautiful dogs create.I hope all with children listen to your video and take all necessary steps to avoid dog/children related accidents.I hope children have experience with pets in happy positive ways that children take with them into adulthood.

@@davidwithey6036 you wouldn’t say a Pit is a guard breed? Yeah, they’re not 150 pounds, but they are fiercely loyal to their family. I’ve had Rotts, Cane Corso, and Am Staff and American Bullys, and can easily say that my Pit breeds (AmStaff and Bully’s) respond very well to the tasks of a guard dog. Sure the lab half is a not a guard breed.
@davidwithey6036
@davidwithey6036 2 жыл бұрын
@@metumartyr3983 Don't mean to sound harsh but your message is pointless. A American Staffy is NOT a Pit Bull look similar but not the same. I have owned pits and British staffies all my life they can protect yeah. but when push comes to shove they will run away from a adult human. They are family pets nothing more or less. If you want a dog to protect you they are right down the bottom of the list. A guarding breed is like a Mastiff breed. I have a British staffy all he wants is cuddles and sit on your lap then his happy. My other Dog Cooper a French Mastiff always looks out the window (even sleeps while looking out the window) and barks at anyone comes near the house. If they come on my drive he gets angry and head butts the window growling and barking. this is his nature not trained IE a guarding breed. When comes to Staffies i know more than most as am 31 and had one every day been alive. They all mouth but no go MOST if need to fight a human. If come to a conflict with a adult without training they wouldn't do anything but run away. With other dogs they CAN be weak minded aswell good at handling pain tho. The cage fighting days are gone that part of them is nearly out the breed. Cooper is the Alfa 1 years old 70kg and still needs to widen up. staffies on parks come to him and when get am the king to my boy. He don't hurt them but shows them who's the boss. Not one yet wanted to fight instead submitted to him. Staffies ain't protection dogs, Not really trained for protection work aswell because they make poor protection dogs. barking at someone looking angry don't mean anything they need to take on the fight if happens and most won't. breeds like cooper won't back down and will stand his ground to protect me and my staffy (billy) with his life. It's in the breed. Shown it more than once. sorry but am being honest like it or not YOUR WRONG.

The "Intimidation Factor" discussed with the saint bernard is a great way to put it. Most family's, especially ones with small children, want a gentle giant that discourages danger long enough for them to take action themselves to protect their children/loved ones. And with crate training, I couldn't agree more. The crate/kennel should be made a quiet and comfortable space for any dog, it makes life easier for the owner while allowing the dog an opportunity to calm down or relax.

Terrific picks, terrific video. You know how I feel about guard dogs, misunderstood breeds, and gaining knowledge. Lots of people do not understand just how much of a deterrent a bark can be. I have a pitbull/great dane who for the list part, likes people. However, because of his size, the glare he can give, his park, and highly unwarranted breed's reputation, he is intimidating.

I definitely agree with the English Mastiff. I’m on my second one. Our last one passed away at 11 years old, he was amazing! Docile and loveable with us, friends and strangers even. But if there is a threat, he was on top of it. Only one time did I ever see him corner someone. He didn’t attack, just held them.

I love my Rotties and all my working pups, and adopted pups/mutts, but the BB it took me 4 years to research and finally find a reliable durable line, I had to go to the other side of the country wert coast, Cali area, for my male, but I found a beautiful pair in Texas just waiting on them to finally breed a lit, and I will have my female. I am truly excited, and can’t wait, in another 3- 5 years I will have my own litter, I can’t wait

❤Bullmastiffs. My first dog was a Bullmastiff and she was absolutely devastating to our family. I love Bullmastiffs! She was a dog that intensely bonded with our family like nothing else. Unfortunately she passed at 9 years old from cancer, leaving us devastated. Gentle giant is definitely a way to describe this breed. Our dog would ignore other dogs barking at her while on walks and just enjoyed walking with her family. Cool, collected and loved all children. She got along really well with the bichon/miniature puddle mix (14 pounds) that we rescued 2 years after. She was such a huge presence in our home literally and figuratively that when she was gone our house felt completely empty. Four weeks after she passed, a local breeder announced that they had a female Bullmastiff pup available. She was born the day ours passed! We had to get her even though we were grieving. We now have 2 Bullmastiffs! And a king Charles Cavalier. This new generation of dogs are amazing but are more willful than our first one. They do have to be reminded, that when they perceive a threat, they need to look at their family for guidance rather than act on instinct. But as always leave us laughing with their quirkiness.

I love your vidoes watch them all the time..you need to do a part 2. I have a boerboel here in Zimbabwe and always had and they are perfect guards. They would force their large frames against me and bark and growl whenever a new face came over, putting themselves between me and them and everyone was intimidated. But you gotta mention an even better guard dog from africa, the ridgeback. Honestly ridgebacks are better guards then boerboels. When you go to someone's house here and you see a ridgeback, you ask its it safe before getting out the car. Definitely not a beginners dog at all!!!

My Bullmastiff passed away a few years ago and he was the typical gentle giant lap dog. He insisted on always breaking up arguments and calmly but forcefully checking on anything going on around the house. He was such a great dog, best temperament ever. Once in high school when he was about a year old my friend tackled me in the front yard just messing around and he jumped up out of nowhere and tackled my friend to the ground keeping him pinned and just growling in his face but not biting or barking or anything. Now my wife and I have adopted a lab/shepherd/pit mix. She’s much more high strung but still very protective and much more wary of strangers. It’s hard to tell what temperament she’s kept from her past and what is related to her breed, but I worry more that an intruder would think she’s not that much of a threat, just to break in and have their face ripped off.

When I was 10, my dad was working in our yard when an old weathered English Mastiff wandered into our yard. My dad was terrified and yelled for my younger sister and me to get in the house. He kinda checked us out and a week later, he jumped through our basement window. My dad noticed he had a bad leg and got to feeling bad for him. So he picked him up and took him to our local vet who recommended putting him down. My dad couldn't bring himself to do it though. He said he saw so much life in his eyes. When my parents ran errands, we were left at home and my dad would always tell him he was in charge. They, along with bull mastiffs, have been my favorite breed since.

I have had several English Mastiffs. My Female, Lizzy, was 225lbs, she was from the "Grecko" line and was very aggressive towards anyone who she did not know. She would defend our children with her life, yet they could use her as a stepping stool to get whatever they needed up high. I miss her every day. She was massive, but loved her family and would do anything to protect us. She even took on a rattlesnake in our backyard, once I heard the rattle and realized she was in danger, I had to pull her away, because she was trying to protect us.... so loyal... so fearless and the BEST gentle giant ever!

This is both for Fenrir and all others. I’ve had a Shiba Inu for almost ten years. He’s an awesome watch dog. If a stranger comes on the porch, he barks like mad and scratches at the window. I wouldn’t have thought it when I got him as a puppy. He’s bigger than a typical Shiba, which makes him intimidating a bit. Though if an intruder entered, he’d back off though continue to bark. He’s getting up there in age. I was wondering whether his watch dog assets are peculiar to him, or if other Shibas have this quality.

I'm determined to have a Broholmer (Danish Mastiff) one day ... nothing else will do. Will mentioned them briefly in at least one other of his videos "10 Extremely Rare Guard Dog Breeds". They have English Mastiff in their distant ancestry but look more like giant, powerful Labs (less drool is a plus!). Need to get Covid out the way though, because it will involve buying from Denmark and I'll want to check out some breeders first. They're not recognised by the UK Kennel Club (the breed was 'regenerated' in the 1970s after nearly dying out after the World Wars), so there's no incentive to breed them this side of the English Channel. Had to pick a bloomin' difficult one, didn't I? 🤣

Great video. What are your thoughts on buying "highly trained" family protection dogs from some the specialist trainers. Cost of a sports car but apear incredibly well trained. Would love to hear your thoughts - pros and cons?

There is a lot of things to consider, first and foremost is obviously cost which at 25k - 80k on average is quite a sum. Another thing is that although they come trained, doesn't mean they will just stay that way on their own, they require daily training once you call it yours. These dogs are NOT pets, they're protection dogs. Legalities are also to be considered (liability) most likely your homeowners insurance will not insure the dog and might even drop you all together. ... All in all I think for those people that need a 50k protection dog such as executives, high $ business people etc, mafia lol, these dogs are great. I think they're overkill for family protection tbh.

Hi, sorry for posting here I could comment on the crate training post. Will Can i ask where am i to put my puppy to sleep while crate training ? I will be crate training when i get my boxer puppy in April (and will start by having a pen around it like you suggested in the video. So while i am crate training her. Where am i to encourage her to sleep? Would it be in the pen where the crate is left open initially? I want this to be a success in crate training and don’t want her to fail because i do something wrong. I hope you can advise 😊. Thank you 😊

You don’t mention Anatolian Shepherds much. I fostered a 4 yo ASD/GSD mix found in a field with an embedded collar. We were in a small home/apartment and he was AMAZING. Sensitive, loyal, perimeter conscious, didn’t eat a ton, and the first night, he spent standing by my bed breathing on me. He was stressed, but really wanted to attach to me. Very good with my 6 year old (at the time). Not incredibly vocal- mostly groans, grunts, and huffs. Didn’t want a ton of frenetic exercise. A warning bark was a low grunt. I’m not sure if that was a fluke. Is this what I could expect from a purebred ASD or was this just a very special friend? (He ended up with a mechanic who lived above his garage, and happily spent all day with his person. Perfect for Velcro Boy!)

Somehow, my wife and I ended up with a 90# shelter dog. We have had usually small to medium size dogs. Rosie has the guard dog drive, and she has the looks. I have to say, until you have one (large guard dog), you just don't know how much they keep the riffraff away.

Hi. I have just bought a property with almost half an acre of land. I currently have 1 german shepherd who lives indoors with us and 2 kids under 2 years old. We want to get some chickens so I'm looking at buying a dog that will patrol the outside perimeter of the property at night and protect the chickens from foxes, but during the day I'm happy for the dog to come indoors and live with us inside. My GSD is used to being indoors so looking for a dog to look after the outside at nights and when we are out. What would you recommend?

I love mastiff breeds, but most of them have short life expectancy, health issues and food bill $$$(if you want top quality food) Will do you have any recommendations for a medium/large guardian breed good for young kids, healthy, medium exercise requirements, good with hot weather(from Aus🔥) and easy to train. I forgot to mention my partner has never owned a dog before so preferably good for first time owner.

@@dragonragevideos4565 Guard, watch, and attack dogs are all different things. Guard involves the ability to defend property with no direction, watch implies barking but no biting, and attack implies specifically trained to attack. An example being Tibetan Mastiffs vs Tibetan Terriers. The mastiffs (guard dogs) would fight off thieves/dangerous animals, whereas the Terriers’ (watch dogs) job was to bark if anything got past their 150 lbs cousins. An example of attack dog would be more like a Doberman, German Shepherd, Malinois, or Dutch Shepherd.

True, but drawacks are cost cost cost. Initial cost of the puppy, food vets bills and inevitable operations and ongoing treatments which will count as several treatments because they will be over a period of years. This means your insurance coverage won't work and you will have to pay stupid excess fee's each time your dog needs medicine or treatment. Heartbreak cost emotionally when they die just after it feels like they just became an adult dog. Drool. Also drool. They are alouf with strangers though and are lovely with kids. cane de presa is what they were called when they were functional and basically it was just a cane corso minus the boxer outbreeding they're ruining the breed with now.

The English mastiff sounds awesome, but I need one that can handle heat lots of heat and occasional cold days. Are there any dogs with the traits you talk about for the English mastiff that can actually handle high heat and still be a sweet, low coat maintenance, low to medium energy, high guard instinct for family and home, and okay for first time owner? Every time I think I've found the best dog breed, I find it either can't handle heat or takes more maintenance or energy than I've got.

Opinions on what would be the best guard dog for a single female, late 50s, work from home, homebody, does not want a dog that requires a lot of exercise, fenced backyard and mid-sized, one-story home. Never had a large breed dog but family members have Mastiffs. I LOVE all animals. :)
