We made a mistake with swapping to a hybrid, it had 400kg less towing capacity, which meant we couldn't tow our caravan. so we ended up going back to a 4x4 diesel

Why did you buy the hybrid if it was below the towing capacity?

Very naive and not reading up on Hydrid cars, and the towing capacity. very expensive mistake.

@@Lutha164-p6g You are far from alone, many have made similar mistakes, dealers are under a lot of pressure to sell some models and it is vital to do the research yourself before buying. Goes for any vehicle really, but the limitations of an EV need to be fully understood.

There is too much rush by governments to force people into buying electric cars. They are fine as a town runabouts if you can charge at home but useless for towing long distances if you have charge on a long journey. Most charging points are in parking bays, so you have to find somewhere to leave the van to go off and charge the car. This is both time consuming and a security risk unless the wife doesn’t mind sitting in the van for two hours twiddling her thumbs.

You'll upset the EVegans, they'll be on here as quick as a flash to tell it's great, don't go too far, keep having coffee stops, it's no bother at all. My brother is one, phones me to ask what caravan he can tow he didn't seem too pleased with the correct answer, a pod😂😂

What I don’t understand is the silence from the caravan industry. Electric cars are impractical and both electric and hybrid have poor range, low tow limits. Obviously hybrids return to ICE having depleted the battery with poor power and poor mpg. If the ban goes ahead or is brought forward this will decimate the touring industry. The industry is worth billions to the uk economy and all we get is silence or the CAMC trying to tell us how practical and good electric vehicles are at towing. Tow car of the year, Electric, forget it. It’s a load of rubbish. I don’t want a small 2 seater van that you can’t swing a cat in. I want to continue with comfort and space. We are sleep walking into a nightmare scenario. Imagine the Q’s and problems on the M5 in summer when we all have to charge every 70miles or so. Ridiculous!

I tow quite happily with my Tesla Model X. About 130 mile range when towing which equates to the capacity of my bladder

Very well said. I totally agree. Electric cars have poor range alone so towing with one would be little more than useless.

@@yerags tbh that’s not bad but I tow my twin axle Bailey with my Rav 4 diesel 4x4 I get around 280 miles. I suppose it depends how far you want to venture.

@@yerags Tesla X are not produced for the uk market anymore. Left hand drive only. At 100k way too expensive anyway.

Quite a few electric cars will happily tow 1600kg and are not £100k.

Hi I've got a new xtrail electric running gear petrol generator Live northeast Scotland very hilly Max towing weight 1800kg Ok ish on the flat hopeless when you get to a hill the petrol engine revs its heart out but cant make enough power for the electric motors Also now know of a week old one returned to dealer would not tow a caravan well under its approved weight stick with a good diesel Electric cars may have a place but not towing

Electric car are a now way a tow car. An electric car channel borrowed a caravan and he took it for a tow to see if he could charge his electric car and there was no chance it is just not the way forward for Caravans. And to be fair, electric cars are not the way forward anyway I have a new Mazda the biggest Mazda that they make it is a plug-in hybrid it toes fantastic best and worst of both worlds however they petrol engines and their diesel engine is 25% cleaner than London ULEZ all this is about is making internal combustion engines considerably cleaner and we can do that. Electric engines 70% of the electricity you’re putting into that car is dirty electricity anyway in the UK and that’s before we start talking about cobolt and all that stuff and batteries are really bad. And let’s not get started under the depreciation of an electric car. OMG what a nightmare you buy an electric car you’re keeping it until it dies or you can sell it for a fraction of what you paid for it. James

i think you might have the stat backwards? around 25 percent of uk mains is natural gas fired 'dirty' and the rest is renewables and nuclear/biomass etc

Gas is the main baseload in the UK, wind capacity can go as low as less than a half of one percent grid demand on a regular basis. Add to that the sun is not always shining, then there has to be backup available at all times.

I counted over 70 EV’s / variants that have a towing capacity above 1500kg, ability to tow isn’t the problem - range is! I’m afraid the problem is one of caravan design- if people think they are going to redesign EV’s purely for a small market like caravanners they are living in cloud cuckoo land.

Never had any issues towing with my EV - in fact it tows just as well as my 6.4 v8 jeep SRT.

but only a light caravan and only about 120 miles before it needs recharging. Watched Andrew Ditton with his EV6 pulling a 2 berth. I can tow a 7.5 metre fixed bed 4 berth for 350 miles in my diesel.

@@stevezodiac491 Good for you, I bet you drive that without stopping as well don't you 😉 besides what difference does a fixed bed have to do with it? Caravan not really lightweight, 1800 kg Hobby from Cardiff to East Yorkshire on one charge. so not really inconvenienced.

We stop for a 15 minute break after 2 1/2 hours or so on long trips, usually halfway point, do not refuel normally, try to avoid forecourts with van hitched.
