Yes- the GX 550 has earned an A in the appearance department, but otherwise it is a lackluster model. Gas mileage is the same as the old 460, the V6 is very complex and difficult to work on, and the interior looks like a 4Runner!

AMD What a breath of fresh air you provide the DIYers. Your candor and honesty in reviewing Toyota/Lexus vehicles along with your pragmatic maintenance instruction is the very best. After much thought and research I purchase two new GX460s in 2023 and I could not be happier with my decision. I never plan to off road these vehicles and knowing I purchased the final iteration of the 460 with all the updates incorporated into the last model was the key factor in my purchase decision. Over the years I have owned four Landcruisers (three 80 series and a 100 series) actually still own a 96' 80 series with 85K in showroom condition. I have always done all my own basic maintenance including fluid changes and brake/rotor replacements. Sadly, it appears the complexity of all newer generation auto design will make that more problematic going forward. Again, well done my friend and blessings to your and your family from Atlanta Georgia Cheers

Yes, I made the same decision as well. The Lexus sales staff informed me that the 23 was the last year of the V8 and that the new GX 550 was going to have a very long wait list time and that could be up to a year or more! One test drive in the GX 460 sold me!! I loved the ride, the comfort and the plush interior. I was coming off an FJ Cruiser, so this GX was a big step up for me, I loved all the old school features and if I wanted power and acceleration I would have purchased a Lexus LC, an SUV is not a sports vehicle and the way traffic congestion is proceeding, going faster from on e stop light to another is stupid and inefficient.

Considering all of the mechanical improvements to the GX550, particularly the Overtrail, over the previous model I can forgive the interior being less “sophisticated”. I have never personally been a fan of Lexus wood trim, and the more utilitarian looking interior with nice materials is more my speed than the GX460. Considering the new Land Cruiser isn’t really any less expensive if you get any options and the GX is just better equipped for similar cost, I think the GX hits the nail on the head. If a buyer wants more luxury the LX600 is waiting, if they need a 3rd row and have no interest in off roading the TX is the answer. I think the GX being focused on all terrain use is a good spot, they might as well just make Overtrail the only trim as far as I’m concerned and offer it with or without a 3rd row.
@edmundcharles52784 ай бұрын
The Land Cruiser is reported to be in the $50K range while the GX 550 can range up to $80K, so there is a big spread in price here! The bigger question s: why buy a GX 550 when you can get the 4Runner cheaper and not worry so much about denting up the more expensive GX?

Regarding GX460: talk about the torque curve of the engine. That's what matters in towing also, Why this engine make so little power is because lower power in a larger engine reduces cylinder heat and pressure while increasing the duty cycle of the engine, That's why your low power GX460 can run at high BPM with no issue, The heads are large high port headsg and the lower aluminum intake has a tunnel ram design. All this for only 270 Lbs of torque, This is why this engine does not break. Regarding new GX550, it will be facing high temperatures in smaller block. Simple physics tells you that to move easily 2.5 tons, you need a bigger engine, not smaller. We shall see, but I doubt that this 550 have the same long-term reliability built in as an old 460 had.

I am open minded and do believe in Toyota engineering department BUT... The whole concept of globalization is to reduce cost to the manufacturers and make people spend more on everything. They are pushing for the disposable things with less repairability or no repair options if possible, their moto is "you will own nothing and will be happy about it " Toyota must follow this path as well, unfortunately. The reliability and longevity is not number one goal anymore with no one.
@TheWinwin4all5 ай бұрын
@@fahedsayed2201 The main reason why I got 460 is that new 550 with it's huge lcd panel, lack of wood accents, cheaper looking interior and plain Toyota steering wheel has lost it's Lexus soul. 460 with it's push buttons and ambient real incandescent bulbs light has the warmth and comfort which the new 550 is absent from. I drove back home 14 hours , 8 hours during night time and I was able to turn off the small lcd panel and dimmed to the minimum the dashboard lights, just this makes the older design cars driving at night more enjoyable and stress free. All these new big lcd panels are the true distress to the eyes because of the constant frequency getting projected in to your eyes, even though you can't see it with naked eye.

The g wagon weighs over 6k pounds which is why a lot of rich people buy it, for tax incentives. You can claim the entire vehicle for your business

the .1% that does serious offroading in a GX are like 15+ years old and they've heavily modified the suspension anyway. Make these a comfortable, Japanese alternative to a Tahoe, that's what people want.

Bingo! Trying to sell a $70-$80K vehicle to the Walter Mitty types may make for good advertising, but most SUVs never leave the paved road!

Thanks AMD! Your reviews are providing us with information and a perspective found nowhere else. I am enthusiastic about this new GX, and as an off-roader, find the Overtrail+ very attractive. Like you, I want the interior luxury vibe, however I also feel it is diminished - and this (together with insufficiently improved MPG) makes me hesitate. I may wait for the upcoming hybrid.

Lexus tried to make the GX 550 into a 4Runner and they succeeded brilliantly.

So what you're saying is the "distracted driver" functionality is going to annoy and distract the driver through needless repetition to the point where it gets tuned out and possible turned OFF and serves no purpose. This is why I am growing more nervous about the driving experience in the next vehicle I buy, no matter what it is.

Have owned a GX 460 and GX 470. Just purchased the 550 Overland and it's a huge improvement in every way. Yes, I was concerned about the loss of the V8 but this new engine is so smooth and more responsive. I was considering purchasing the LX 600 when this became available. After driving this, I can't imagine the LX 600 (at $120K) providing a better experience. Don't overanalyze this 550...just enjoy it as I do.

Love the new additions: the actual numbers for hp and torque and the little illustrative figures when you talk about the engine!

Don't worry about having a '23 and not going off road, you are in good company my friend. I bought one too and even installed a full $1200 1/4" thick set of aluminum skid plates from the front tow hooks out past the center diff. I will never go on more than a fire road at 30mph at most. But at least I am not afraid of having a shovel lodged into my frame (again) after it falls off of a dump truck on the highway 👍

This is not Lexus anymore. It is Lexyota now. I’ll be sticking with all my old school Lexus vehicles where they truly were passionate in the pursuit of perfection.

The GX has always been a "lexyota" version of the J150 platform (Prado, 4Runner, GX).

About tonneau cover. Actually, for the previous generation, it was a smart design. You can pack it like a sandwich and store it behind 3rd row seats. There's even a strap on both sides.

AMD notices everything. The cutout in the body for the rear shocks was the winner for me. Awesome review AMD. That’s what we come here for…

I really wish it had a naturally aspirated V8 instead of the turbo option. Terrible MPG for a turbo charged car. The 2UR-GSE would have been a good option.

The tone you said "it will scratch your entire interior" with caused me to immediately cackle 😂 . 21'GX owner here and I'm pretty sure the first week I owned it I lost a part of my soul when I saw the scratches from putting that tonneau cover in and out the first time.

I owned for many years a 2018 Lexus GX 460 luxury and I traded it in for 2021 Lexus LX 570 and as much as I love the 2021 Lexus LX 570. I miss my GX 460 so when I get a chance in the future, I am definitely going to purchase, a 2023 Lexus GX for 60 hopefully a luxury build and after watching this very helpful and informative video I will tell you I am not going to purchase Lexus GX 550… I think from an objective and subjective standpoint you hit a bull’s-eye on this video and I feel that it’s definitely not worth the money and not built the way I thought maybe five or six years they will get all these engineering mishaps fixed… With the GX I remember as early as 2004 they really didn’t come out with a good GX 2022 and 2023 so they do a little at a time so I’ll watch it over the next five or six years… Thank you for making a fantastic video. This really gave me a lot of insight without having to do it myself. God bless.🇺🇸🙏

I disagree this looks much better than the older one. The older one was ugly it actually looked worse than prado version but the one looks much better . I get what you are talking about. The tx or lx is car for people who think it looks too off road . This is by far the best looking lexus suv on the market

The overtrail variant looks the best 💯… maybe in a few years I’d get one when they work out the kinks. Needs some genuine wood trim in the interior tho (like the steering wheel)

Too much screens ,, wait until stop working and ready to pay over 10k for it. RX350 used screen is ~7000$ . To me it just too much unnecessary tech that killed lexus/toyota reliability
