@arkrainflood2 жыл бұрын
one HUGE problem i have heard from mechanics is the draincock breakoff when attempting to open OR leaking after opening then closing. they recommend removing the lower hose clamp and draining that way. the draincocks are typically plastic and rarely if ever operated for many years. the plastic becomes brittle from heat cycling and the o-ring gets stuck which results that it is damaged when the valve is opened.
@robertomulero5142 жыл бұрын
Well the male end of the radiator where the lower hose connects to is also plastic and prone to cracking or leaking when you try to remove a stuck hose from it. So either way, you're potentially screwed. Lol
@arkrainflood2 жыл бұрын
@@robertomulero514 a tip to removing a coolant hose is to relocate the hose clamp to the very end of the hose, even to the point where only half the clamp width is on the hose, then operate the vehicle until it reaches operating temperature. the increased pressure will cause the hose end to balloon out which unsticks the hose end from the connector. otherwise as you mentioned, the twisting of the hose might very well damage the connector. even if one is trying to replace the hose and uses a knife and pliers to pull it off, the connector can also be damaged.
@TheCarCareNut2 жыл бұрын
Usually they only break when they haven’t been opened for a very long time like 10 years or more or if the car overheated before
@oibal6011 ай бұрын
Yup, when I 'drained & refilled' the coolant, I was gentle with the plastic. I smeared some Molykote 111 on the o-ring. Good to go. Zero leaks.

When performing coolant replacement, don’t you need to drain coolant from the engine block as well? Or is just draining coolant from the radiator sufficient for such purpose?
@jay-em2 жыл бұрын
If these Toyotas are anything like my Honda, only a small fraction of the coolant is in the block and it's not worth the hassle to drain, especially if the drain bolt is in a hard to reach location and seized due to heat cycles.

My 2020 Camry will be five years old (with around 22,000 miles by then) in Feb. 2025. Both brake fluid and coolant are original and tested really clean and not even near needing replacement. AMD recommends changing them both at 5 years...but, they both test really clean with plenty of use still left in them both. What would AMD recommend?

Thanks Armando! I'm still confused about the heater being off though... You didn't use a scan tool, but perhaps you somehow put it into "bleed mode" manually without the scan tool? You make it sound like the "bleed mode" will automatically open and close all the valves, including the heater core valve, which is why the heater is left off. Not questioning you for sure, but just trying to understand... Don PS I would happily drive 3hrs to bring my old Camry to CCN...

@@TheCarCareNut I want to thank you for the coolant tech tips and the throttle holder. I bought one like you had on the Amazon entry and IT WORKED GREAT! Being that the air temp was over 90 last Wednesday following your coolant procedure with the engine fan didn't take long. If this was two months ago, it would have taken longer for the engine fan to come on but I would have appreciated the hot air coming from the fan. Anyway on the fan's 2nd cycle the engine temp stayed at 194 to 196 until I let the engine idle. Still had some coolant in the funnel (similar to yours). Shut off the engine and about 40 minutes later the coolant had dropped enough so removing the funnel and and adapters resulted in no coolant loss. One thing that helps to lower the coolant a little more quickly for many vehicles with the engine off and rad cap off is to gently rock the vehicle in the front side to side. It's not going to go down quickly, but it does help a little. Add a good size fan in front of the vehicle blowing through the condenser and radiator with the engine off with help to lower the coolant level in the radiator. Reinstalled the radiator cap, added coolant slightly over the FULL or MAX mark in the overflow container. Next morning the level was at the normal max or full mark. So that's 1. L.O.F., 2. Brake fluid system flush, now with clean fluid, and 3. Coolant drain/refill. I have the transaxle fluid for it, but jury duty is keeping me away from Periodic Maintenance for the RAV4 and my Nissan Frontier for a while. Thank You again for the Tech Tips, they're like Gold!

Thank you for your great videos!! I have learned so much from them. I have a 2020 Corolla SE with the M20A-FKS 2.0 L engine and needed to replace the coolant bypass valve (seems to be a common issue on these cars). I don't know if I need to bleed the system after, or not. A small amount of coolant came out when I replaced the valve, but not sure if it warrants bleeding. Also, my car doesn't have a traditional radiator cap, just the cap on the reservoir tank, and the coolant funnel does not fit on it. I would love to see a video of you replacing one of these valves on a Corolla and doing the coolant bleeding, as the service manual seems to have a much more complicated way of bleeding, including running the heater, revving to 3000rpm for a few seconds, and then back to idle, etc., etc. I'm a little stumped as to which method to use. You always have the best videos and cover all the steps.. You're the only one I really trust to be able to do it right. Since this issue seems to be common on all of the M20A-FKS engines, many of us would be eternally grateful to see it done by the best - YOU!
