The port injection allows fuel flow over the intake valves to remove carbon, it’s also makes better low rpm torque using port vs direct. The other thing it allows is for the engine to go through a direct injection self cleaning cycle during hot idle. The direct injectors actually have the ability to blow the carbon off of their tips and sides while the engine runs on the port injectors. Genius system.

@@MrTacoJay I have a 2018 Camry with this engine too - I honestly can't bring myself to rid of the car. Might keep it forever as the "spare" car and get a truck alongside for my DIY needs. 60,000 miles and literally nothing has gone wrong on it and it blows my mind, because while that *should* be the normal standard for today's cars, I've experienced many other domestic brands (Chevy and GMC) and even European (had a Volvo V70 XC) and other JDMs (such as a Honda civic with a cvt). This Camry is by far the best vehicle I've owned in my life and it brings me joy every time I sit in it because it just feels.... so robust and well-made. Plus, it does go surprisingly quick for a little motor and I love puttering it around with the paddle shifters pretty often. My only real regret is not getting my SE trim with the convenience package, these were still pretty new in 2018 and I was on a tight budget and got it for $25k OTD but I do wish I had blind spot indicators and heat/cool seats but that's not enough to ding against the quality of car ownership with this A25-FKS Camry SE. @@usercoimbar You made a great choice, it's absolutely an amazing car. From the styling, comfort and Lexus quality/reliability. I have never been a turbo lover and always avoided buying cars with them. Turbos create to much heat and pressure and with modern engines with all the plastic, you are just asking for trouble not to mention turbos don't last. Toyota/Lexus uses a bigger engine with a smaller turbo, so it should be more reliable compared to say German cars where they put large and sometimes two turbos in the worst location like on the top of the engine above the manifold. One thing people don't know who own vehicles with turbos, is that you can't just shut off your after driving, you need to idle it for a few minutes for the turbo and oil to cool off for a bit. After I came back home I filled up the tank to check for the first time my gas milage turned out to be...an amazing "35.8 miles per gallon." I had to redo the numbers on my calculator to double check...445 miles divided by 12.4 gallons of gas. I am totally amazed! An EGR that picks up the exhaust post cat is an excellent idea. Never heard of that being the case before.
@johdirt78433 жыл бұрын
In regards to the EGR cooler. My coworker has a '15 Prius C and the EGR is fed post-cat. She uses her vehicle to commute 45 mins on the highway each way to go to and from work. Car has 120k on it and is serviced at the dealer. She was experiencing rattling and loss of power under low load (think stop and go traffic), every once in a while when the car would start up (Prius death rattle), and when the ICE would turn on after switching between electric and mixed us (middle of the eco bar). She went to 2 dealerships and 1 independent shop and they all told her nothing was wrong with her car because there was no codes stored or pending and they couldn't reproduce the issue. I called a 4th shop that are Toyota specialists and they told me they wouldn't be able to diagnose it unless it threw a code or had one stored or reproduced the issue while a scan tool was hooked up to the OBDII port. I contacted my buddy who owns an independent shop and I told him what it probably was, but to also run some other diagnostics just to rule out a bad coil, etc. Well, her EGR cooler was clogged solid. Once it was replaced, it runs fine. The passages are too small on the EGR cooler as designed. This EGR will clog, it 's just a matter of time. The only improvement that I see is that there is now a separate plenum that feeds the exhaust gas into the head / intake manifold.

Heated thermostat can be used during warming phase as described but it also allows much reduced HP load for coolant flow. With the coolant flow valves and variable speed electric water pump there is no need for thermostat to have any temp control function other than speeding initial engine warm up. Once engine reaches temp the water pump speed becomes the main control of heat energy rejection. Low load creates low heat and low pump speed is all that is needed. The pump can run and move all the coolant needed with only 250-300 mA, maybe less. The mechanical water pumps oversupplied greatly and thermostat would reduce opening to keep coolant temp higher. Pushing water through the reduced opening takes fuel for that extra work.
@LukeKochanski Жыл бұрын

Love your videos! We appreciate the technical knowledge you have!! A comment on 0w16. These engines are spec'd only 0w16 in North America, but in the Middle East and Austrailia they are spec'd for 0w16, 0w20, 5w20, 5w30 and 10w30. I don't personally feel there ever would be any negative effects other than fuel economy from using any of these oils in any engines as long as the temperature range is not exceeded. 10w30 below 0F. Toyota and Lexus have recommended even 15w40 in the GR engines above 20F in the Middle East and Australia. Toyota does maintain that 0w16 is recommended for all temp ranges as well as all by 10w30 is also recommended for all temp ranges. But 0w16 is preferred. A concern I have see on my 08 GS450h (2GR-FSE) is fuel dilution, and on the lower viscosity oils this can be very detrimental to engine life. Have you seen any oil analysis on the Dynamic Force engines or the GR and UR engines?

Hi AMD, you are excellent at making the extremely complicated explanations simple. After having watched your channel over the past 3 years I purchased the same exact car(2023CamryHybridXSE)as you except in silver,without the black top.I traded in my 2017 Audi A8l 3.0 w/ 32k miles. I had previously owned over 20+ years only BMW’s.,from a 2006 750li ,to my last a 2015 X4. I truly loved the technology of the German cars, but found them to be finicky and problematic (not all of them). What I felt was that the technology was forced into the car because of trying to always one up the competition, either in the engineering and or entertainment/safety. Which brings me to this video and how you describe the Toyota 2.5 and the painstakingly thought out process they took to design this motor. I have always been a big Toyota fan from my very early 20’s . My first one I owned was a 1977 white Corolla,then 1979 Celica hatchback. The last Toyota I owned till now was a 1985 Toyota Celica ST that my brother bought brand new. He gave me the car with 150k miles, which I took to 210K , and sold with the original clutch and NEVER 1 issue. I went to the Toyota dealer this past Dec , and when I drove the 2023 Camry Hybrid I was blown away impressed(your descriptions were spot on). I really like the looks, and even acceleration was good , making me impressed enough to buy it. I would just like to thank you and your wife for making the channel and staying with it. I do actually have a question on the use of the paddle shifters. If I use them to downshift in trying to slow the car (charging/save on the brakes) am I putting a lot on strain, or doing damage to the transmission? An why do I see in certain blogs that they say the brakes last a lot longer on this particular hybrid? Thank you for sharing your talents . God Bless you and your family. 🙏Eddie S

Agreed... thin oil is NOT as bad as it seems. In old cars, (even going waaaaay back to the 1920's) oil was primarily a lubricant and it's partial coolant properties were a side benefit that didn't matter, the older you go the less importance cooling was because metals were more tolerant and engines didn't make much power... As cars got newer they started to make more power and oil flow was increasingly needed a coolant, even commuter cars got oil coolers (once a high performance thing)- then oil had to travel to more places, while moving quick enough to do hydraulic things (variable valve timing, variable lift, turbocharger cooling and lubrication) and flowing oil is more important. It may flow like water, but it's supposed to, and it's supposed to be designed around that. If you are even doubting the oil in the least, just change it more often.... nothing bad will come from that... oil wear and buildup is way worse on these new engines... If there's any motto it's "keep it flowing" not more pressure.

Mr. AMD, I think you may have just saved my "bacon" (the A25-FXS in my 2019 Avalon Hybrid). I was planning to switch to 0W-20 or even 5W-30 because 540RAT's motor oil blog convinced me that 0W-16 would result in insufficient oil pressure and reduced engine life. The theory was/is that oils thinner than 0W-30 or 5W-30 are only recommended by car makers for that fraction of a percent of improved gas mileage in their CAFE rating, as encouraged by government bureaucrats. The engine designers, if asked privately, would not recommend oils thinner than 0W-30, or so the blog would have us believe. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
@flagmichael4 жыл бұрын
It isn't just a Toyota thing, either. 0W-16 is a brand new viscosity covered by ILSAC GF-6B. Consider it an entirely different lubricant; "GF-6B - The attributes of GF-6B include the following: Not backwards compatible with older engines" 360.lubrizol.com/Specifications/ILSAC/ILSAC%20GF-6/ILSAC%20GF-6A%20and%20GF-6B _Never_ substitute 0W-16 into an engine designed for any other viscosity, and if at all possible avoid substituting any other oil in engines designed for 0W-16 GF-6B. GF-6B provides _better_ protection against low speed pre-ignition, a serious concern for advanced engines like the A25A engines. The mistake of thinking protection is proportional to viscosity is one that has been made for decades. Viscosity is about bearing clearances; protection is about film strength, a *very* different thing. When somebody tells you the recommended oil is not right for the engine you know they don't know oil. Oil pressure exists only to maintain oil flow through the potential wear areas, using higher viscosity oil _reduces_ that flow. www.api.org/-/media/Files/Certification/Engine-Oil-Diesel/Publications/Motor%20Oil%20Guide%201020.pdf

My cousin bought one of these new cars, I think it was a Toyota (?) that uses 0W16. Getting an oil change outside of the dealership was not so routine. He said the car had a skid plate on the bottom that had to come off before you could access the oil drain bolt and oil filter. I don't know why the auto engineers did that, maybe to make the engine quieter, as you mentioned in the video the new injection system can get quite loud (?) It was hard to do a typical oil change at one of those drive-thru places, because the car really needed to be put up on a lift to easily access all all the screws holding the skid plate in place. The first place he went to said they wanted an extra ten bucks to do that, but they didn't have the 0W16 oil in stock, so he had to go somewhere else. After he found some place where they did have the oil, they charged him an arm and a leg because they only had the oil in DIY 5 quart bottles - no bulk oil available via the standard overhead hose dispensers. I have no doubt the Toyota dealerships can maintain their new cars, but I think I'll wait to buy one until the rest of the auto maintenance industry catches up.

On the engine oil, the owners manual for the Australian A25A-FKS states that it can run 0w16, 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 reliably and can even handle 10w30. I would posit that CAFE/EPA make it so stringent that the auto mfg has to recommend the thinnest oil to meet the EPA MPG requirements at the detriment to the rotating assembly. You make it a point to talk about how smart Toyota engineers are, and I bet they’re smart enough to configure the electronic oil pump to put out the correct pressure in a whole range of engine oil viscosities. Please stop with the kool-aide and shoot everyone straight. 0W16 is government juice, just like DEF in a diesel after treatment system.

Love the channel. I do respectfully disagree on the sensitivity of this engine and the 0W16. This comes down to North American emissions regulations and has nothing to do with needing a precision oil weight. All overseas manuals for this engine document up to 15w40 can be used in this exact engine (default 0w16) but not required. And yes, fully understood on the very slight increase in warmup time but does not apply for many like myself and my climate. I am in Arizona and heat is intense and extreme during our summer months so the car is 1/2 warmed up before I start it! I have two vehicles with the A25A-FKS and do not use 0w16 in either (I use 5w40) and have not noticed any drop in MPG and I much prefer it. Combined, 70K miles so far. Not saying 0w16 is bad, but you do have options if you DIY, own and maintain your own vehicles. Engine is not going to spontaneously fragment from other oil weights. Thank you for the informative video on this new and beautiful car I just purchased. Came back to comment after watching part 2 to show some love here too!

A simple thermostat and belt driven pump worked flawless for years. Overengineered to save fuel, but not unscheduled maintenance. These pumps will fail frequently for big money to replace. I'll take simple over this

The electric pumps have one electrical connector and 4 bolts holding it in place. Very accessible as well. Its not a big deal

I bought a new 2023 Camry SE with this engine. So far I love it! Just did the first oil change and of course used 0W-16, the only thing I’m concerned about is the electric water and oil pumps, I live in Texas witch we all know is very hot and I’m afraid something in there is gonna become brittle sooner then it should have give out while driving. But oh well fingers crossed 🤞 God bless you Car Care Nut

Enjoying all of your Toyota videos and appreciate your "Simple but Complicated" philosophy. However, as a veteran mechanic (municipal fleet-police cars, fire trucks, snow plows, etc.) with 40+ years of wrenching experience, and a new RAV 4 Hybrid owner, I would also be very interested in some "Complicated but Complicated" in-depth explanations, going beyond the "Simple" and diving deep into the amazing technology in my daily driver! Thank you and keep up the great work!!

I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the sound of the engine online, but I knew right away it was some advanced stuff going on. It sounded intentional, so I wasn’t concerned.
