Thanks for the instructive video. I drive almost 38 years BMW's and like to inform two things: 1. If you replace the battery, always connect a backup battery or battery charger to the circuit before disconecting until replacement is complete. Otherwise you have a big chance that you need to reprogramming the complete Ecu.(€!) 2. BMW always says the ZF automatic transmission has a lifetime oil and don't need any maintenance. Even most BMW garages don't have the knowledge how to flush it. The ZF factory in Germany recommend a flush + filter replacement every 80-100K km (this is officially published). I always do it by a official ZF cervice center (price all incl. 980€) This different mind-set I never understand from BMW!

You’re gonna love doing injectors, intakes, and tank vent valves! At the end of my shift I’ll update this again on everything I’ve seen from the B58 setup. Also are you in IL? Update, so the B58 overall is one of our most leak proof engines when talking about oil. The only oil leak that I have ever done was the oil pan gasket, but they’re pretty rare, and the sealant is so strong it feels like the oil pan is nearly welded to the block. For check engine lights, if the car is equipped with active radiator flaps that’s what is the most common 9 times out of 10 (needing new software, or parts replacement). Another very common issue for the check engine light is the fuel tank vent valve being stuck open causing mixture faults. For the AC, on most New BMWs that “condenser” can cause a lot of concerns for AC not blowing cold. More often than not the issue is because the Low temp coolant circuit is low and needs to be topped off. Recently we have seen a 1 off car where the AC heat exchanger was leaking refrigerant into the coolant circuit which was neat. The intake manifold in rare cases can leak coolant into the combustion chamber, and if the leak is massive can cause hydrolock (never seen that, but possible). This is more common with the S55 where the intercooler is not internal to the manifold though. Overall though the only issues that really happens again is either radiator flaps, or a tank vent valve. The B58 is pretty bullet proof. Supposedly it’s a modified Diesel engine in Europe. The only things changed was the compression ratio, and spark plug holes that I know of. Love the videos!

"The intake manifold in rare cases can leak coolant into the combustion chamber, and if the leak is massive can cause hydrolock (never seen that, but possible)." Nope, don't care how rare or remote the possibility. Any history of coolant leaks is a hard pass. Doubly so if the engine in question is over engineered.

I’m a semi truck repair tech and the amount of similar technology between this engine and the trucks I work on every day is insane. I love high pressure common rail design of the injector, incredibly efficient and should be used on all cars eventually. Air to water cooler is the same as a EGR cooler which don’t leak as often as you may think, when they do they very rarely lock up an engine or dump excess coolant in intake circuit. Very very interesting, bmw is onto something here with this engine specifically.
@nikn8tr2 жыл бұрын
The only downfall I have seem to come across is most normal or average people will not be able to EFFECTIVELY service or do repairs on this vehicle. But at the same time the price of the vechicle seems that most people would not do there own maintenance or repairs, especially when you compare to C8 vette which was supposed to be (back in 2020 and 2019) the biggest competitor.

Coming from an E86 Z4 Coupe this finally is a worthy successor. I'd even think long and hard about getting it with the ZF automatic. If anybody is on the fence - go check out the current M3/4/5 and see that it is just the best automatic ever. I stumbled over this channel by accident - boy are you good! A very different and fresh view on a car! The reason for the deal is kind of interesting - these kinds of cars, Coupe even more than the convertible, are really not big sellers. BMW didn't really want to do a new Z4 and Toyota didn't really want to build a new Supra. Who came forward and initiated the talks i don't know, but BMW in the end said "Well, we'll completely build your Supra onto our Z4 base IF we get a good look at the Mirai internals because our Hydrogen7 project stalled so badly". Here we are - Toyota got a really nice Supra without the horrible development costs and BMW gets its first full Hydrogen car (iX5) with the Mirai tech.

Well, sealed for life is one of the least descriptive things I have heard. When it is said life, I'd expect manufacturers to say what do they mean by "life." Is it 60K miles? or is it 10 years? I have heard same for DSG, and a DSG mechanic approves this. And he also adds, "still, change the oil after 60K miles or 6 years, so you can extend lifespan of your gearbox." As he works in Istanbul where city traffic is heavy, a lot of people are having fatal error in their DSG's around 80K miles, which could be avoided by gearbox servicing. I would really wish that manufacturers would give some intervals for people who wants to drive their car for many long miles.

So... -No dipstick. 2021's burn oil. Potential owners will not check level regularly because it is a new car. Engine is starved of oil, could cause bearing failure. I see some owners taking advantage of this for another "free" car/engine. -Intake manifold & intercooler fused together via plastic love. Could crack after many heat cycles near the engine block and cause coolant loss. Coolant loss will make engine overheat. -No thermostat. Instead, a smart valve when out of commission could overheat the engine since this block heats up fast like you said. -Some beginner DIY owners could potentially spill oil onto the ECU when removing oil filter as shown removing ECU cover: 10:34 -Battery replacement/registration coding. ECU confirmation of battery replacement change. -Computer calibration for differential. No more simple drain and fill? -Rear camshaft/timing chain looks like an engine out job. Fun. -Parking pawl crawl human-squirrel death by Supra. -Plastic valve cover. I'll wait for aftermarket to make better parts/solutions. Also, for the depreciation hit. Also, will look for a clueless 1st owner. Just like with the N54. Thank you for the information.

This isnt the same B58 found in other BMWs. BMW sent this engine to Toyota and they went thru the whole thing to increase its reliability. They upgraded the bolts and fasteners to stronger variants and made BMW change afew other design aspects to increase reliability. I just hope the changes Toyota made do help long term. I'm considering buying one of these. If the engine failed I would probably swap a 2UR-GSE into it and supercharge it, because V8s sound better. Dont even think Supra purists would be mad cuz they dont consider this a Supra anyway. I just love how light it is and the way it looks. Imagine pulling up in one and seeing the look on everyone's face when you revved it. 🤣🤣🤣

The pure capitalistic Germans have penetrated the over refined industrialized Japanese. Selling excitement and performance with a little (or a lot) less reliability is more profitable Per. car than selling just reliability. Having a 4.5 star rating while selling millions more parts is madly more profitable than having a 5.0 star rating and barely selling anything except maintenance for the first 100k miles of the life of a car.

Thanks for the heads up on this car. This video alone made me re-think buying one. Not interested in engineering for the sake of it and making DIY life a PITA. I have owned one BMW E46 and it was a nightmare from day 1 after I brought it home, left me stranded on a hwy in NJ and BMW told me they couldn't help even thought the car had less than 1000 miles on it because it was a state road. On top of that it ate through 3 power steering pumps, a cam shaft sensor, all 4 window motors broke, it constantly leaked fluids everywhere. Never again I told myself. When I see a BMW all I can think of is sucker. The don't call them "Bring My Wallet" for nothing. Only 2 aftermarket companies that makes parts for them as well. $800.00 for a power steering pump.

The rear timings chains remind me of Ford Exploders from the early 2000's, they had gears and chains for ONE bank on the front of engine and another set of gears and chains on the BACK of the engine. So I guess Ford one-up'd BMW in the insanity department :D. That "always-on" parking prawl sounds like a PIA for techs...if the engine doesn't run, you can't throw it in neutral and push it around. Also note BMW hasn't caught up with Toyota in fuel injection, this only has DI meaning carbon build up will probably become an issue (vs 'real' Toyota's that have old school manifold fuel injection too for this very reason). Thanks for a super interesting video! I wanna drive one now, but maybe not maintain or repair it!

@@TheCarCareNut I found when hybrid system is cold (engine below 72*C or battery below 20*C) or when speed of car is more than 110km/h, corolla hybrid will not shut down an engine but it will keep engine on 1000 RPM with out fuel injection and it will roll car on the road only by MG2. I'm curious why in that case engine is not stopped. Could you please provide information? Thank you.
@TheCarCareNut3 жыл бұрын
Hi! It could be 2 cases. It would either have the engine running to warm it up or have it charging the battery. Try turning off the climate control and see if it shuts off
@p6102zrfxe3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCarCareNut no it is not related to battery level or engine temperature when speed is 110km/h+. For example I'm going downhill engine temperature is 92*C, battery is 55%(but real, not one from car diagram), and battery temperature is 35*C, engine RPM will not drop below 1000 until speed drop below 110km/h, while car is moved only by MG2. Below 110km/h engine will be shut off. I know that is max speed of MG2 and MG1 17000RPM. On 110km/h will not overrev because they rotate around 11k. It is strange to me. Liked and subscribed! 🎉 I totally and completely understand why Toyota chose this route for the Supra. It really is a niche market, probably taking up less than 2% of Toyota's annual income. Toyota was able to make the Yaris GR by themselves, because to other regions, it was just another version of the plain old Yaris, albeit a very punchy one. The US-market Yaris is actually just a rebadged Mazda 2. If Toyota wanted the US to have the Yaris GR, then they would have to sever their partnership with Mazda, which they won't. There are also rumors of Toyota and Mazda co-developing an RWD inline 6 platform, which I could definitely see the A100 Supra riding on. Toyota's strategy is that if the car they want to make doesn't fit into their existing TGNA platforms, then they will seek partnership with another brand. And it's a very smart one too. I'm pretty sure this plan is working out well. I mean, just look at the new Corolla, Camry, Sienna, and a whole bunch of other Toyota vehicles! They are still solid and durable vehicles, with that signature Toyota reliability baked into them. Some of them are even luxurious!
@rightlanehog31513 жыл бұрын
FYI, The Mazda Yaris is no longer sold. Toyota simply made a massive PR blunder when they insulted their most profitable market with their refusal to offer us the GR Yaris. It is the best affordable performance car they have made in a generation. As Toyota's best customers, we should be first in line to get them not left behind casting envious glances towards secondary markets like Europe and Australia. Honda, Hyundai and VW can all make a business case to offer their best hot hatches in North America, why shouldn't Toyota?

The toyota engineers said they were shocked when they tested the stock engine. They said it was as reliable as a toyota engine.
