Wow, finally an unbiased and honest review of the Supra. I’ve had my '21' for a year now as a weekend car but could easily drive it everyday. Sports cars are never perfect cars, there will always be compromises. They are not made to be big and luxurious and hold 2 weeks of luggage. Its the perfect size for me. I’m older and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. I can get an honest 35 mpg on the freeway, then drive like a bat out of hell. As you pointed out, this car would never exist had there not been a collaboration. The BMW engine is epic. At only 5000 units per year there will always be limited money in development to have everything you want, it just doesn’t make sense from a business aspect. That being said, I cringe every time I think of the Committee that approved 9 fake vents on a sports car, that at least half could have easily been functional, when some everyday cars have real ones. And we’re 4 model years into it, and they haven’t addressed the wind buffeting, ugly steering wheel that should be flat bottomed and thicker, the way too dim infotainment screen, the outdated infotainment, and maybe change the shifter knob to a real sports car look. How about updating the front and rear ends? If they want to compete with the new Z they have to do better. That being said, I love it, there is nothing on the market right now in this price range that I’d rather have. But the new Z has me wondering….

AMD. Greetings again from the UK. Just to say that I have only just watched the video because it is you doing it and i love your videos and your honesty, integrity and expert engineering knowledge . At my age of 58 sporty does not interest me and even if I could afford the Supra which I cannot it would be too loud and too hard for me in terms of the ride quality. I fully acknowledge that the Supra has its place as a track car and play thing rather than a daily driver. I am very much looking forward to more reviews and updates regarding progress with the shop / your new business. The Lord Bless you and keep you and your family.

In a BMW the big old school 'radio preset' keys can be programmed to just about anything. It will be like that in the Supra as well. For instance you can program a key for a radio station but also to start the navigation system to navigate back home. Can also be used for all kind of vehicle settings and more.

I had a 1988 MK3 turbo 5spd from 1990 to 2000, loved that car! Lost the head gasket at about 160k miles (overheated pretty badly). I was still on the original clutch even! (throw out bearing was getting noisy). Was a very reliable car, only issues I ever really had was starter replacement (what a bitch it is to do one), and clutch master cylinder. That was mostly my only failures until I lost the engine (that was mostly my fault, should had done the head gasket/studs upgrade at 90 or 100k... Replaced it in 2000 with a '99 Camry which I am still driving now at 335k miles, runs and drives perfect, only have done normal preventative maintenance items mostly! No major or odd failures, a few suspension / front end parts due to the high miles, 3 radiators, both cooling fan motors 3 or 4 valve cover gasket replacements, overhauled the throttle body / IAC, 2x all done myself in my driveway, very easy car to work on... I would never own a BMW product or design, or almost any European car really (besides maybe a old 126 chassis Mercedes tank, especially if it has the straight 6 gas, over the V8)... But I would really like to have another MK3 turbo stick, especially if it has a MK4 engine swap done well in it...

Like set tire pressure display as preset 3, or rear view camera as preset 4, or audio tune settings in preset 5, or device select for wirless car play on preset 6, along with radio preset. You can see why they made it so big, it’s crazy powerful.

I owned a 2020 Supra. The hud would toggle on and off randomly on it's own even though the settings still showed it was off, the alarm would go off continuously if the key fob battery was low, and at approximately 19,000 miles the driver side door controls stopped working. The mirrors would not unfold and you couldn't roll up or down the windows. These issues, plus a few others, happened more than once. Three different Toyota dealerships could not verify the issue even though I had video, or would tell me everything worked even though I would drive away from the dealership with the problems still an issue. It was a great car mechanically that was plagued by BMW problems. The car is worth it if the issues were fixed.

Your so right Ron, I am in the automotive service business myself. Electronics specifically, I deal with everything from Rolls Royce/Bentley to Kia (trying to think what's a cheap crap car these days, can't say that for the past 10 years about Kia anymore! LoL)... Worst things I have to deal with is any and all European cars. They are only good cars while they are under warranty. I always tell people you want one, lease one and give it back at the end of the lease then lease another car if you want another Euro car... I have had the same Toyota Camry for 21 years with 335k miles on it and only have had to do normal maintenance and minor things every car needs now and then (radiators, cooling fan motors, tie rod ends, bushings, valve cover gasket) that's about it and most I do myself in my driveway and I am done in a hour or less. Original starter, alternator, master cylinder, calipers, wheel bearings, exhaust system, engine sensors, ECU, and so on. No joke but 2 keys actually wore out and had to be replaced but not the car, engine or transmission! LoL... Keys are non electronic, no chips, so you can imagine how cheap that was at Lowe's to have keys cut!!! My '99 Camry is still nearly as quiet on the road as a Lexus LS430 I recently drove for a while... Can't beat it with a stick! Since a compression test I did last year showed all 4cyl are equal and still right at normal spec I am going to get it painted again! Dam paint and keys are the weak part of the car! 😂😂😂

The Supra is a BMW Z4 with a different body built at a Austrian subcontractor. Same mechanicals and even the interior, Toyota did the exterior, "tuned" the suspension, and that's about it. I understand the reasoning for it, it wouldn't have existed otherwise, but I wished they at least used their own engine. I think their sales numbers would be much higher if there was more Supra in this "Supra".

IMO, even if this was 100℅ Toyota, almost nobody would buy it. It would be too expensive for most. Exactly what happened to the MK4. So it doesn't really matter.
@gpaje

@@damilolaakanni Have you seen the current auto market? Plenty of people are buying expensive vehicles these days, and the Supra isn't even at that level. I know plenty of potential buyers who bought something else after they realized what the "Supra" was, even more expensive vehicles from other brands.

@@gpaje That might be slightly coping. How many people are buying a r35 brand new from the factory? The r35's sell like shit from factory, at least in the states, and especially in recent years. Most people bought r35's used, if they can afford one at all, and if they can find a clean example of one. Granted, the r35 has not changed much for more than a decade since being released. If you think a $100k+ hypothetical MKV '3JZ' in house inline 6 from Toyota would sell, you're delusional, especially in the states, and especially when $100k+ brings you into a whole new realm of competition within the price range.

Nice vehicle for "track type driving," but like you said it's not made for long distance driving. Also, I wouldn't even try to drive it on a snowy day or even the next two weeks after that! It's not made for that! I don't hate the car, probably if I drove one, I'd want to buy it "Right Now!" Anyway, thank you for the in depth explanation. Hopefully this car will last many good years and not have the Euro curse of high maintenance problems!

Hello AMD. As per your advice for coolant replacement on my Corolla, I found the drain on the driver side as you said. When I measured the amount that came out, only about 3.5 quarts of the 6.9 actually drained out. Is that good enough for the replacement? If not what should I do, since I don't want to open a can of worms removing things. In a side note I am impressed with how Toyota brilliantly designed the radiator drain and made a hole through the front core support as well as in the splash shield for easy drainage

With you going into some detail on some BMW aspects on this car, Is there any chance you would be willing to do a review on the M340i/M440i (gran coupe if possible)? I’ve been reading about how BMW have been pushing for better reliability in their modern cars. The M340i/M440i sit in that bracket that’s obtainable from a luxury car point of view, sell well by volume, and appear to be some of the more practical cars in the BMW family if you want performance, reasonable maintenance cost, and reliability. Modern sporty Japanese Cars aren’t doing it for me anymore, so I’m curious if this the right time to make the switch.

Toyota and BMW still haven't addressed the throttle hesitation issues on their cars (Supra and Z4). It's a serious safety concern, a few people on the forum complained of situations where they went to pull out into traffic and the throttle pedal was unresponsive for about 3sec, or the car just outright stalled.

I've experience this multiple times with the Supra. The throttle response delay comes at very inconvenient times and it happens at random. I've seen some fixes for this but the fixes make the accelerator way too sensitive especially if your running bolt on +Tune.

@@robbyskyline Quoted from the forum: "Every morning I slowly back out of my garage (there is like a 5% grade) in reverse and sometimes I lose throttle response. As if there is a huge lag or something like that. If I step on it the rpm will go up but the car won't move couple secs and will then jump. It almost feels like the engine is going to stall when the lag is there. And today is the first time it actually stalled. I've started it again, drove to the first traffic light on my way and the throttle had that weird 2-3 seconds lag again."

I am a Toyota fan through and through. However, my son insisted on purchasing a BMW. We traveled to Chicago and purchased at 2013 BMW 335i X drive with 68,000 miles on it two years ago. The car now has 103K miles and he replaced the charge pipe, a plastic coolant fitting and just tires and tune up after that. I think this car has been better than a typical BMW's reputation might suggest. I was the one who insisted on an inline V6 though and it is a wonderful motor!
