As a Romanian i tell you, first make Romanian friends, they will teach you what to eat and how to eat. secondly home made traditional food is way better then what they sell in stores. If you get to know Romanians that have a better knowledge about traditional food and what you should eat and what you shouldn't then you will notice a huge difference. Besides you should visit and eat in the Transylvania region. We make the best food and drinks and the majority of Romanians said we have the best food and drinks. It also depends in what region of Transylvania you go. But hey if you interested look it up. By the way thank you for visiting Romania. I am happy to see foreingers visiting and exploring. Lots of places to see and know :)

The main problem with Romanian food is that 99% when is home made, tastes divine. But in restaurants or caned in stores, is 50% chance to not be good at all. Usually sarmale, the soups and papanasi it's ok in restaurants too. I recomand to order Ciorba de burta at Citygrill network restaurants, it's almost good, like home made. The rest... depends 100% of the Chef.

the fish egg salad is often a hit and miss. It's all about the quantity of fish they actually put in there and the ingredient quality in general. Just so it's easier to understand, consider store bought salad has about 8-9% fish eggs, the rest are fillers, flours and additives. Home made only contains fish eggs, oil, onion and some lemon (I would guess around 60% fish eggs?)

First of all, everything done with mamaliga is pure Romanian, and not Hungarian, the corn grows very well all over Romanian lands and that replaced the bread from immemorial times in the romanians history. Goulash, the Hungarian word for the " tocanita de cartofi cu carne" is also a normal Romanian peasant 's food, more or less some spices, depends on each home taste. However, you should shop more in the open markets, where you can choose your own potatoes, vegetables, fruits, even cheese, sour cream,....., But, of course, then you have to spend time & effort cooking 😀.... , not everyone is accustom to do that. ...
