I'm like Derek with the starting. From childhood on i start any car while having the left foot on the clutch and the right on the brake. The reason will be differnt though. When i was 7 or 8 my dad mounted a "funny" new horn into the car and told me to switch on ignition. At that age i had not known that there were different stages to the key so i turned it too far. He was standing in front of the car while i did that, and the whole car made a leap forward and it almost hit him. Left an imprint in my brain. So as soon as he taught me to drive this was how is started cars since. And before i let my foot off the brake and clutch i check if it's not in gear. And then still i let off the clutch but stay on the brake. So if i am too stupid and forget the car might stall, but it won't jump forward. The clip with the tyre test was fun! (Winter tyres have their name for a reason)

So cool to see Sam on this one! Loved hearing you guys talk about your time at Automobile and how awful Ann Arbor is for like 8 out of 12 months of the year 😂 I know the exact parking garage you mentioned and I can confirm that stairwell is still nasty to this day. Also learned that one of the Automobile staffers you mentioned is currently a coworker of mine -- what a small world! Great listening to this during work and thanks for creating such good radio like you folks do.

The DNA of this episode runs back to Leon Mandell. These (very talented) clowns represent a quality of reporting and presenting that is becoming more rare by the day. My gratitude to Jean Lindamood Jennings for not killing them on any of the occasions she undoubtedly considered the act.

I loved this episode! Its really just two of the most eclectic and hyperactive personalities I’ve seen vibing out and discussing long automotive history with each other. I can imagine how intensely afraid Sam must have been as a 25 year old fearing the loss of his future, since myself am a 25 year old worrying about whether or not there’s a future in this path too 😂 if they are doing another vid with em next week it’ll be great to watch!

To me one of the greatest takeaways from this episode is the idea of " writing... not to be understood, but so that you can't be misunderstood." It's so simple and hearing it out loud, it's almost obvious; but it wasn't until Sam said the words that it dawned on me that every time I've wrote a letter, sent an email, or a text instead of calling or talking it was so that my words were succinct, verifiable, and without ambiguity. Otherwise, great exchange and I look forward to each new one. Please have Sam back again.

This episode showed me that there are positions in automotive journalism that go beyond simply writing about the cars. How blind I was... When I write an Instagram post, a university paper, or am a part of a group assignment, I'm the person who then scours over every single detail and enjoys it! I would LOVE a position like that with one of the outlets. As someone who has spent their life doing their homework and loving cars, hearing Derek and Jason talk about what it's like to work in this industry (in a previous episode) felt somewhat discouraging. But that was my first reaction to their words, and it took a few replays to understand that it was just the honest truth behind their jobs. But now realising that there are other opportunities available in this field gives me some hope. I'll continue to work on getting my degree, honing my editing skills, and actually reaching out to an outlet in the hopes that someone might be interested in what I have to offer.

I've transported and driven lots of very expensive cars for different work and yes I'm always relieved when the car is not my responsibility anymore. I was just asked to take a McLaren P1 from Connecticut to Florida a month or so ago and I quoted an extremely high rate because I wanted nothing to do with a car that just sold for $2,000,000. Funny thing is the only car I've ever put any damage on, that's not mine, was an almost new Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster. Luckily it was just scrape on the front fender from a wheel strap rubbing on it and the owner was a friend of mine.

Never been allowed into a Ford GT. But when I bought a 1700 mile Honda S2000 in early 2005, the owner wanted to run the sale through the Ford dealer where he was buying a Mustang convertible to save sales tax. (His version was wanting a back seat for the kids. Mine was that he thought the Honda was a cramped, noisy, hard riding nightmare - all pluses for me.) The dealer had a Ford GT on the floor and while they were messing with the paper work I spend my time ogling it. At the first glance, the words "Dan Gurney" just popped into my mind.

Tbh, I was surprised thinking this at the time, @@thatsamsmith. It did seem to improve towards the end. You guys _sounded_ fantastic. I have a radio announcer background, and enjoy listening to voices that have all those positive qualities that makes hearing them a pleasure: breath control; enunciation; variety of tempo; expressive intonation, etc, etc. Both of you also know your stuff. I think Jason is one of the very best presenter/producers of car enthusiast videos - anywhere, in any format. His technical knowledge _and_ delivery style, tick all the boxes for engaging us viewers. Did I feel let down because we heard almost nothing from Derek for most of this hour? 🤷🏼‍♂️ Maybe. He has (most humans have) fewer talents to draw from than Jason, but Derek seems to be the _perfect_ anchor, as to Jason's bright, attention-getting spinnaker. (Forgive that weird metaphor. No f'n idea where it came from!) Maybe it was that you and Jase were speaking about each other, _to_ each other. It was as if you two were there for only yourselves. Made it, errm... missable, for us watching.
