Ohh man i remember cutting my IC pipes, but i made a bead roller out of a pair of old vise grips !! just had to use a grinder to grind out a notch on the top half of the teeth of it and then weld a little bead on the bottom half and when you clamp it on the welded bead on the vise grip pushes into the notch you cut in the top half and creates actually a pretty decent bead roll. And it didn't cost me a dime ! One recommendation when mountain bov's is preferably you want it closest to the throttle body ( like how Car Passion did ) because that is the first point where surge begins. So the closest you can get the bov to the throttle body the less likely you are to experience surge at the compressor wheel.

Hey man I've noticed throughout your videos you have some serious lifter tick. there's an easy fix for this. next time you change your oil put some dex 3 in there and the ratio is simple. here's an example approx 3 quarts of oil in the miata put 2 quarts of oil and 1 quart of dex 3. another thing that is just absolutely amazing to run in your miata is Rotella T6 oil. I've owned quite a few miatas and run them all with that na and boosted all year around and I live in Ohio so it can get cold here and it keeps the engine clean and running amazing.

Quality keeps getting better. Great use of inexpensive parts. Since we are in the southwest where temps are often 90's (or in my case 110-120's) and intercooler really is mandatory. I am seriously considering doing an air to water setup for mine. I have had good luck with A/W setups back in my RSW days.
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+NickelNDiminIt Yeah you definitely want an IC if your temps are 90+... It makes a ridiculous difference in air intake temps.
@nickelndiminit51368 жыл бұрын
TheCarPassionChannel Do you think an air to water charge cooler would fit? Most are ~4" deep and vary in width and height. But I think a 4"x4" charge cooler could be fit with slim electric fans. That would shorten the plumbing runs a LOT and maybe preserve throttle response? What do you think?

Alright, so as far as intercooler placement on a Miata goes it's pretty much a no brainer that it goes into the "smile". But here's my question: if you're going boosted and not upgrading your cooling isn't the heat from the intercooler going to diminish the efficiency of your radiator, potentially causing engine overheat? That's the one thing I still can't wrap my head around with Miata boost builds.
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Totally Legit Gaming [TLEG] Not only the heat from the intercooler, but it also blocks the airflow to the radiator. Keeping turbo cars cool is a constant battle! For street driving it's usually not a big deal but at the track, temps get high fast if your cooling system isn't in order.
@TheOnlyToblin8 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel Right, so it's like I thought. So for a track car you'd place the intercooler someplace else, or even go water-to-air and place it's radiator someplace else?

Big intercooler + small pipes = ideal. Quicker spool due to less volume and slow air velocity through the intercooler itself
@TheCarPassionChannel5 жыл бұрын
Intercooler system volume does not notably affect lag, very common misconception.
@alikengi175 жыл бұрын
@@TheCarPassionChannel air cools as it expands.. so do you think there would be any benefit from running smaller pipe through the actual intercooler itself? Assume you are below .4 mach
@TheCarPassionChannel5 жыл бұрын
@@alikengi17 It will cool as it expands into the intercooler and heat back up an equal amount as it's compressed immediately again into the piping though
@alikengi175 жыл бұрын
@@TheCarPassionChannel precisely, I want it to be in it's heated state through the intercooler and then expand as it enters the throttle body. Maybe results would be negligible.. Also I would love to have a map sensor at the manifold and another pressure sensor near the turbo compressor
@alikengi175 жыл бұрын
It's seems that nobody really knows, my theory is that as long as you maintain your boost target at the manifold, flow through the intercooler system is sufficient, although an open wastegate will reduce exhaust flow restriction. So it's a very difficult line to walk.

I wonder if heating plastic pipe, balloon it with air pressure, then flatten an shape to better snake through tight spots. Thinking of it as same air flow capable just friendlier dimensions. Eample, 2 1/2 inch pipe formed to 1/2 inch by 6 inch wide (guessing) to sweep over radiator under hood then forms back to the 2 1/2. Point of this question is can the pipe dimensions be altered to equal or greater and still have same result?

I'd much rather run the longer 27" intercooler, whatever little airflow you save going smaller is completely wasted by the endtanks and plumbing blocking everything. If you are using the stock air flow meter while keeping the PCV valve working you absolutely need to plumb it back to the intake manifold like stock. It must be on the pre-turbo side, after the AFM. No breather filter, anywhere. Otherwise you will have an unmetered air leak at low throttle and vacuum, it will run lean.
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+pontiacg445 I went with the smaller intercooler so I didn't have to mess with any of the a/c or p/s lines mostly. Also not worried about the small size, people run no intercooler at all with the boost I'm going to run. On my other car the 27" IC easily cools 15psi in 100 degree ambient temps to below 120 degrees in boost, so this 19" IC should have no problem at all on low boost. Good point on the PCV , I didn't think of that. Since the ECU is in closed loop it shouldn't run lean at idle, but still unmetered air.

@observingrogue76528 жыл бұрын
If I was going to be really cheap, I would have gotten a carbureted engine, and made a draw through set up. Because the carburetor is on the turbo inlet, the turbo is sucking in the air & fuel, and compressing that directly into the intake manifold, and the atomized fuel has a cooling effect, an intercooler is unnecessary. Also, fuel may condense in the intercooler, and over time, that may pose a hydrolock risk.
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+RoyalSilver&Gold This isn't the stone ages man, it's not worth saving like $100 and converting to carburetion, lol. It will never run as well as an EFI car and I hate the idea of having fuel in the turbo/intake.
@observingrogue76528 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel I was suggesting that if someone wanted to be really cheap, they can get an old car or motorcycle, so old, it's carbureted & cheap. And even cheaper still, is a draw through turbo system. Yes, fuel injection is better, and I would really, really like a full turbo system, at least one intercooler, the biggest & deepest core that could fit, and a recirculating blowoff valve, not venting to atmosphere, because I don't care about style, intimidation, and getting extra attention, I want the blowoff valve to vent between the Filter(s) & compressor, blowing some dust out of the filters from the inside, putting positive pressure before the compressor, improving it's response, and having the engine breathe filtered air through the blowoff valve, when not under boost, improving engine response, and using a Synapse blowoff valve, because it's very very good & seems all American. I would greatly prefer all of these things, but I'm too poor right now.

Also, I'm so poor, I don't have my own welding Kit & pipe bender, in case I can't find anyone that will let me use theirs, and I prefer to have my own. I also don't know if there are any negative effects, to a turbo inhaling & compressing atomized fuel and air. But a draw through turbo system & carburetor jetting kit, can still be very affordable alternative. I would still use AFR & boost gauges.

Hey Greg! How is the Freddy Blow-Off Valve working with Broke and Boosted? Are you happy with its operation?

I ended up not using it, it leaked so bad right out of the box. I talked about it in ep14 I think. No problems thus far running no BOV though.

Could you explain more in depth about the breather filter? A google brought up some confusing stuff.

+Eric Schatz What breather filter? I don't remember exactly what I said

You actually ended up doing so in a later video. I believe Intercooler Pt. 2.

What about some junkyard intercooler from some other car?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Martin Bernath Perfectly acceptable as well, and much cheaper.

May I know if the 19"x16" is the core size or includes both inlet and outlets?

I've been looking alot into miatas more or less because we'll they're cheap and form what I hear extremely fun rwd cars, I currently have a 2002 acura rsx and my biggest concern is me fitting in a miata, so I figured I'd just ask now you think me being 6'1" and 250 is to big for a miata? I've been reading alot about the "foamectomy" and bolting to the floor and such but if possible I'd like to keep stock seat rails. lol long questions but I'd like an answer from somone that isn't from a 8 year old forum
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Casey Wise Honestly the best option is probably going to be a complete aftermarket setup with a bucket seat with an aftermarket mounting setup, that will give you both headroom and legroom. Putting a bucket on the stock rails works, but it's hard to make the seat sit lower. I would try to drive a completely stock Miata first and see how it is, the foamectomy will sit you about an inch lower (I used to have it before I went to a bucket seat. I'm 5'10" and I have plenty of headroom. The NC might have a little more room inside since it's bigger so you might want to consider those too, but I know plenty of people that are 6'2"/6'3" driving Miatas, it's all about the seat setup.

@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+s Haha not really sure of another channel like mine for NB's, but quite a bit of what I cover will work for NB's as well. OR at least serve as a good guideline.

Where did you get your couplers? Those things are expensive and I'm looking for some cheap(er) silicon ones.
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
90% of them from an Ebay kit that was around $80 for all the piping, couplers, and clamps. Some individual ones can be found on Ebay for pretty cheap, and if you need a specialty sized one hit up siliconeintakes dot com.
