I swear my cat remembers being deathly ill with pancreatitis several years ago. He was on deaths door but my vet and my family fought hard to make him well again. There were a bunch of nights I spent on the couch with him and many days that I was hand feeding him and giving him meds and fluids. He got better but now if he has to vomit, even just a hair ball, he comes to me and makes this heart wrenching cry of panic. We both get so upset recalling that experience all over again.

My deceased Siamese cat would make a gut wrenching sound or yowl, when he had to vomit. He would usually wait for me (mostly) until I grabbed a newspaper, unfolded it, and laid it on the floor under his head...to vomit on.

Tina, I'm so glad your cat got better. Our cat was diagnosed with pancreatitis also but did not get better despite meds. Eventually when he'd lost a pound or so of weight, the tumor was palpable. Anyone reading this, if your cat stops eating suddenly, ASK the vet to do a scan if they don't offer! We still might have been too late to save him, but if caught early enough, you might save your cat.

When I was in high school I taught my kitty to roll over with the help of treats. She would only do it for me and just ignored everyone else who tried to get her to perform, treats or not. Then I went overseas for studies and didn’t come home until I graduated from university, and after all those years my kitty still remembered this trick. She came up to me, rubbed herself on my legs, and rolled over right in front of me as if to say: remember how we used to play together? It’s now been a long time since she passed away, and I miss her very much.

My brother and my cat used to have a strong bond. My cat was super scared as soon as strangers came into the house. As soon as the doorbell rings she was hiding under the bed until they were gone. My brother moved and came to visit like 10 years later. So she has never seen or heard him since then. She didn’t went away hiding but stood in the doorway, stared at him for a minute and jumped straight onto his lap and started purring. That’s all I need to know about cat & memories.

I was a drug addict who had to leave my kitty with an ex for a while until I got my life back together. The last time I saw him was on Jan 24th 2018. I vowed to get him back. 4 and a half years later, I have my own place, sober for 3 and a half years, car and job. The last missing puzzle piece was my Gabriel Goldschmidt. 🐈. I was finally able to get him last month and when I got him out of the crate and picked him up, he Instantly recognized my voice and started rubbing and purring and wanting to do a game that him and I played, that him and I ONLY played. We had a happy reunion and it was the best day ever. He doesn't leave my side and I am spoiling him for hopefully many years to come.

There was a feral and dangerously hostile cat who had a habit of populating our back yard with successive litters of kittens until we had her trapped and spayed. After her convalesence in our house we released her, and she disappeared for eight years. At 3 AM one cold wintry night I happened to look out my back window, and there she was, perfectly still and staring up at me, just as though she had never left. Now chastened by experience and transformed into as sweet a cat as you'd ever find, she lived out the rest of her life with us (and the four kittens of hers we had kept).

For a few years I looked after an outside cat brought in by the next door neighbors. Later, they moved out of town, and took Coco-Puff with them. It was almost six weeks later that I spotted her running back up the street to her old digs, on the final stretch of her Homeward Bound trek, noticeably leaner but still healthy.

This happened to me! I used to feed a street cat for months since she was 3 months old. I couldn’t adopt her coz my dad wouldn’t let me. After I left the country for 3 years due to my dad’s job, I came back and then a few days later I was outside just standing when she came to me meowing and jumping and trying to rub against me and I realized she didn’t do it to anyone else. She was excited as soon as she saw me. Now I’m gonna get a job and adopt her very soon.

My cat has a morning routine where when I open my bedroom door to let him in, he comes in - dragging his feather stick toy. He jumps on my bed with it EVERY morning, and we play 'feather' for 10-15 minutes EVERY morning while I'm waking up. :) That has definitely moved to his long-term memory.

Cats have excellent memories. Many years ago I used to look after my neighbour's two cats when they went on holiday, then she moved out and I didn't see her again. Meanwhile I had also moved. Walking home along my street after work one evening, about five or six years later, there was a black cat sitting on a wall. I spoke to it as I approached - I think it's rude not to - and as I passed the cat put out her paw and grabbed my arm, stopping me. When I looked I recognised the white marking over one eye. It was one of one my ex neighbour's cats. I had no idea she had moved into the same street and was amazed the cat remembered me (or my voice) after such a long time.

Almost 10 years ago now, I was working in a storage warehouse (at age 18) as I spotted a little, skinny, dirty calico cat. She was wide, meaning she was pregnant. The hair on her back stood up in spikes because she was so skinny, her spine was pushing her fur up. She was covered in what looked like a layer of soot, and she was desperately trying to find a hiding spot. I spent 4 hours trying to capture her. She was clever and fast, but clearly social. She didn't wish to be touched, or approached, but if I sat still long enough, she would come to me and headbutt me. As long as I didn't move or speak, she would be all up on me. But turning my head even the slightest made her shoot away into the rafters. I called her Suzi and kept singing this name to her. I fed her a whole tin of party sausages in order to lure her (it was all we had) and finally trapped her in a plastic crate. I called my mother who said "if you can get her home, she is yours to keep". The best choice here was the animal ambulance, because she needed to be checked for a chip and treated for a horrible earmite infection. Oh, and yeah, have the baby! So they picked her up. The lady said, "she's never going to love you. She's wild and mean and she will always keep running away." I called that night, she had had one baby, and she wasn't microchipped, meaning I could keep her. My parents picked her up a month later as she had regained some strength (baby included). She was wild the entire car ride. My folks were worried she wouldn't like any of us. But at home, we put her into a small side room, and opened the cage. She shot out and tried to hide, but when I said her name, she froze and her whole demeanor changed. She spotted me and immediately climbed onto my lap and laid her head against my chest. It took her a while to warm up to my parents, but she knew me. I *know* she remembered me from a month prior. Whether it was my scent or the sound of my voice, there is no other way she would have cuddled me if she didn't somehow remember me feeding and squinting at her. She's currently on my lap, the baby stayed with my parents and is now a burly 8 year old lad who's dating the other cat we have, Suzi is content and loves me still. Every night she sleeps in my arms and every morning we have breakfast together. She's my little soulmate.

Of course she did. I used to babysit a friend's cat when she traveled for work. She changed jobs. I didn't babysit him for 2 years. I was afraid he would forget us. After 2 years she had to travel again. She assured me he hadn't forgotten us. When she came to drop him off he seemed to remember us. He got right out of his carrier. I went to show him where we kept the litter box since it had been so long. Much to my surprise in the few minutes he had been there he had already used the box. So yes, they remember.

The Santa Claus Effect you mentioned is how we got our bookstore's shop cat acclimated to customers. She's a rescue/foster fail who missed the window for easy socialization to humans, but she is curious about us. She dislikes petting from strangers and is super sensitive to how she's being petted (her whiskers are HUGE and it really irritates her when people brush against them). But she's SO FLUFFY that no matter how many times I warn people, about 10% of folks are gonna try to pet her anyway. It was easy to train her on scratch & bite inhibition because she's genuinely a sweet girl, but she's still very big on establishing her boundaries and she WILL slap someone who oversteps. And most people get nervous when a cat swipes at them or puts their mouth on them, even if the claws are in/the cat doesn't bite down. We had to teach her to knock it off. She's very food motivated, so each new customer is a new snack opportunity. She figured out VERY quickly that playing nice gets her a treat and not playing nice means I'll pick her up and move her to a different part of the store. She's free to come right back, so that may not sound like a huge punishment--but that's pretty much the only time I move her from one spot to another unless there's a safety issue, and for her it's kind of the equivalent of a parent saying, "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed." She's gone from avoiding customers or hanging out just long enough to get petted & swipe at them, to now greeting them at the door, accepting a quick bit of petting, rubbing against them (*sometimes* -- I think it's kind of a thank you if they did it right) and then running over for her snack. Then she'll peace out until the next person comes in. If we don't have many customers she sometimes even waits by the door for them 🤣 Our other shop cat is "just" a shorthaired black cat and is usually overlooked at first...but he's attention motivated, and is so loving and friendly that everyone who likes cats even a little bit ends up adoring him. We even have a handful of neighborhood customers who pop in once in a while just to say hi to him ❤

I have a cat that was always sitting with or on my husband. He had a stroke and was in hospice here at home. The cat never left him, always on the bed with him. After he passed away the cat would not get off the bed, until it was removed from the house. Our cats grieved and cried and went from door to door, for days. About six months later I took one of my husband’s shirts to create a memory bear for my grandson. My husband’s cat, laid on the shirt and wouldn’t move for about an hour. I just gave him time. My husband was at home for his last days and I was giving him his meds via a syringe and one of the cats jumped up on the bed and literally yelled nonstop at him. My husband struggled to lift his arm and I didn’t know if he wanted to pat the cat or push him away so I didn’t help, apart from still slow dripping the meds. He passed the next day and this cat kept a close eye on what was happening while keeping himself hidden. He and the other two cats were all upset so I carried them in to his room, one at a time to show them he was gone. They too have a favourite jersey to sleep on. They definitely have an excellent memory. My cat's vet, who had a very high pitched voice, came to visit him at home twice. The first time, she fully vaccinated him as a kitten. Even though he had been relatively easy to handle while being injected, he ran away as far as he could in the house, after it was done. Two years later, the same vet once again came home to visit him. As soon as he heard her say "hello" to my dad at the entrance door, he rushed to hide under a cupboard. He had not seen her yet! He simply heard her voice, and he dashed. Another thing that he remembered was the sound of the pestle and mortar. My dad is a biologist who understands the importance of nutrition for health. Once, our cat seemed to have lacklustre hair for no apparent reason. My dad decided to give him some vitamins. He crushed a small fraction of a multivitamin tablet in the pestle and mortar, mixed it with water, put it in a syringe, and opened my cat's mouth to give it to him. He did it once a week for 3 weeks in the autumn and once a week for 3 weeks in the spring (this was all before Purina and the likes). After a month, our cat's hair was always extremely soft and shiny and he was super healthy, with long-lasting effects. That said, every single time, he ran away and hid somewhere, after the deed. Well, every time we used the pestle and mortar for something else (crushing mustard seeds for a salad, for example), our cat looked at us with that "not again" look in the eyes, and slowly but surely disappeared under a cupboard. He was such a bright kitty. I still miss him, after 20 years.

Keep in mind how small they are and their physical capabilities - they'll remember where their are fences they can walk along the top edges of with their incredible sense of balance; they'll remember where the *dogs* are and where all the climbable trees are, and other pussycat stuff like that.

A cute story: my mom is a voice (singing) teacher who has her students come to their lessons in her home. A cat I grew up with (RIP Muschi as of a few years ago) absolutely LOVED one of my mom’s adult male students. She’d come running from wherever she was sleeping in the house to greet him as soon as he came in the door and his speaking voice filtered through the space. Well, anytime he’d leave a voicemail on the landline and my mom would play it back out loud, Muschi would perk up. We referred to this student as “Muschi’s boyfriend.” 😂 She’d remember his voice even if months had lapsed in his lessons where he wasn’t around.

When I was growing up in Japan, we had this intensely intelligent and compassionate former stray cat named ChaCha. He loved being held and he’d suck on our ears while purring. When my family and I immigrated to USA, my grandparents, aunt, and uncle took ChaCha in as their new family member. We visited them over 5 years later, and ChaCha immediately came to us, leapt up to be held over the shoulder like he’d always done, and sucked on our ears, purring like a very loud engine. He did that to all of us and my relatives were surprised to see that behavior. Although they were taking great care of ChaCha and spoiling him rotten, they’d never seen him do that to anybody. During the day, he would follow us wherever we went, and at night, he’d come to sleep with us. It was a very special time we spent together; he must’ve remembered us.

It was so special, like she was saying “oh my god, person, i had no idea when I’d see you again!” I graduated in May, and she just passed away last week. I’ll always cherish each moment that I came home to her.

Had to leave my kitty for 3.5 months or so to suddenly deal with family issues back in my home country. Left him in my place here, and some very nice people came and took care of him a couple of times a day. When I got back here, it was clear to all that he definitely remembered me and was very excited to have me back. He also stared at me and purred for hours that first evening. First meal with him, I tried our routine, which I’m sure none of the care givers did. “Wait,” which means to sit and wait. I set his bowl down. “Look at me.” Keep looking at me until I say, “Okay.” It was all there in his memory banks! And, then, he started “asking” for clicker training, which of course is snack time for him. He remembered it all. I was very pleasantly surprised! I need to go back to my home country this month to stay, so I’m taking him with me this time, of course, and I’m wondering how his memory will be for doing clicker training in a completely different location.

I remember when my Gremlin died, my other cat Aslan was so upset. A year later the person I lived with adopted a cat that looked almost exactly like Gremlin, and Aslan looked like he had seen a ghost the first time he saw her. Aslan knew Gremlin his whole life until he died. I firmly believe not only did he remember Gremlin, but for a minute I think he actually hoped it was him.

Back when the meme of a guy holding his cat up to catch a bug was going around, some friends asked if I had ever tried it with any of my cats. Not long after, a moth came inside and was hanging out over the laundry room door. I grabbed the nearest cat, my Mustachioed Tuxie, Kova. He hates being picked up, but settled down with a few "steady" commands. (He enjoys obedience training with my dog) Then he spotted the moth and froze in my hands. Chatter commenced. I held him up and he grabbed the moth and held it until I put him back on his feet. HE STILL REMEMBERS! It was years ago and my Kova still remembers the one time I held him up to catch a moth. I open the laundry room door and he races inside, takes various positions, bobbing as he looks at the top of the door for prey. He may even paw at my leg to hold him up, looking up at the top of the door the entire time.

The first time I spent three weeks at my college dorm and then I came home, one of our cats was super standoffish while my other cats were happy to see me like they were when I lived with them full time. I think he was mad that with no prior pattern, I left for weeks and maybe he felt abandoned. Now when I come home on weekends he’s his normal self. So I guess he committed my college stays to memory.

My niece came with my husband and I when we went to pick up one of our cats as a kitten for the first time. She spent the most time with him during that 1st day, playing and talking back to him (I have 2 very chatty Siamese). She would also stay with me when my husband had to go out of town to see his sick father. At least 6 months had gone by since the last time she had come over and we moved to a new house. My niece came to visit and the second he saw her, he jumped up on the couch to "tell" her hello. It amazed her as she has never had her own cat. I was not surprised.😊

Great topic. As a shelter volunteer, and foster mom, I am often so heartbroken by the cats, particularly the older ones, who are owner surrendered or brought in as strays, who seem so shut down and sad. I worry that they are missing their families, are grieving and confused about where they are and what is going on. I want them to NOT remember. It really is hard for those of us who care for them and sometimes I think I can't take it anymore. Then I remember, my job is to help them and love them while they adjust. Someone has to do it, and it then warms my heart when they do come out of their shells and show they are ready to move on to a new family.

We have 2 cats, wanted to go on a short trip with my husband, took them to a cat hotel. The owner was posting pics on inst. the cats looked so miserable and unhappy we had to cut the trip short and came one day earlier. At that hotel cats were not sitting in cages, they had own rooms with glass doors and had a freedom to roam all over and sheltered outside all day and interact with other cats if they wanted. My cats didnt want. I will never leave them at any hotel, we will always be taking them with us. I can not understand people who surrender their pets. So cruel. It is even more cruel than to surrender children - at least to those u can explain something and find an excuse (lame, i know), but animals do not understand what happened and why their world just changed out of sudden.

This summer (2022), I had an experience with liver cancer. I think my cat, Merlin, does indeed remember this, because even now, in December, he gets in my lap, checks the scent of the spot where they put some TACE beads in my abdomen, and then settles down for a brief purr session each morning. Same sequence of events, every morning. I daresay he does remember the time when I was in pain and sick from the TACE therapy, even now. And now he checks, every morning, to make sure it's not happening again.

The second I opened the packaging, my cat ran into the room all excited to get some chicken.

My Motley remembered (and told his clowder) about the horrible cold outdoors. Literally, this cat got out in February in upstate NY and was gone for three days and nights. When he let me recapture him (a story unto itself), he was permanently an INDOOR CAT. In fact, if he got into a room with a door open to the outside, he would leave the room post haste. If he could not leave the room for whatever reason, he would huddle in the farthest corner from the open door and cry. Loudly. Motley Remembered.

When our cat was still very young, we had to leave her with my grandparents who live about 5 min away for 3 weeks, because we went on a holiday. It was a one time thing and the cat never went back afterwards. 18 years later our cat was becoming a bit senile and suddenly she showed up in front of my grandparent's house. They let her in and she immediately ran upstairs. She went straight into the kitchen and sat down in front of the fridge and waited for my grandad to take out some food for her, as if she had never been gone.

Oh boy was I not prepared for your story to hit me like a damn truck. I had to say goodbye to my best boy a little over a year ago. His health began to decline after the death of our other cat and one night he started seizing and was struggling to breathe. I rushed him to the emergency clinic at 1 am, but I had a feeling our time was up. They were able to drain some of the fluid in his chest cavity to give him a bit of comfort but I could tell he was panicked by the situation and strange environment. Those few extra borrowed moments before the shot will always mean everything to me. I remember he didn't calm and lie down on my lap until I sang the dumb little "Night-Night Song" that was part of our evening routine. He would always settle up against me and I would say I loved him and would see him in the morning, but this time I said I would see him soon. Then he was gone. So yes, cats absolutely remember important things. And absolutely f*ck congestive heart failure.

A few years ago, I had a new cat who had never seen a new pair of reading glasses I had then. That cat hadn't seen me wearing glasses yet. I was in bed reading. My new cat approached and very cautiously investigated. So I took off the glasses to let my cat check them out further. I could see the wheels turning in his head as he tried to understand the shiny new thing, and why I would put that on my face. It was so clear that there was deep thought and curiosity going on there, investigating, trying to understand what this shiny thing was. Seeing that for those few minutes was an amazing window into cat logic, cat thinking and feeling, their reasoning process, their way of learning and playing and curiosity. I know they are cat-like, not human-lie, both similar and very different at the same time. But seeing that was so rewarding and intriguing for me. I knew that m cat ws studying everything about those glasses, working to understand this shiny new thing and why the human had them. :D There is an intelligence and a soul in there, a cat, a being as important in their own way as humans are in theirs. If only we could know more about them. They are such a blessing, worth all the wacky stuff and misbehavior. The things that make them who and what they are, are just as special as what makes us human. (And I miss that cat, long ago now.)

That story makes me think of Johnny Hutch. He was not a kitty but was our "mascot" when I was in college. A retarded 50 year old with the mental age of about 6. He loved our 6'7" track star but didn't know him with a Halloween mask. He was terrified. So off and on and off and on and encouraging Johnny to examine the mask as this gentle giant tried to explain he was still the same guy. Cats absolutely have great memory recall. My boy Samson and I have an amazing connection because we both had trauma. He was rescued from a dilapidated building having lived outside for several years and he was in foster care for 9 months. He was approximately 6 years old and it seemed like he may have been someone's pet at one point but not sure. In any event, he was extremely loving from the day he was rescued and immediately cuddled into his foster mom's arms and purred so loudly when she took him home. He's a gorgeous black house panther, has FIV, several missing teeth and doesn't have a meow but more like a squeak. He's absolutely perfect!❤ It was love at first sight for both of us and the day after he went up for adoption, he was mine. His foster mom cried the entire day after bringing him to me because she just loved him that much but knew he needed his own home because she had 8 cats of her own that were all rescues. When Samson and I first met he immediately looked around my apartment curiously and then proceeded to take a nap in the kitchen well the two of us talked for over an hour. The next day I called her and told her how much in love I was and that it happened the first time since my son had passed, 4 months prior, that I actually had a full night's sleep. My son, Rio, was a stillborn when I was 6 months pregnant and I almost died. Can't even begin to tell you how that literally suck the life right out of me and I fell into a deep depression. I knew I did not want that to be the rest of my life and my son would want me to learn to love and be happy. So, I needed Samson just as much as he needed me. Our first night together he jumped up into my arms and cuddle with me. I'd look him in the face and I promised him that I would never leave him and that no one would ever hurt him again. Also that I would give him the best life ever. He looked me directly in the eyes and began to purr. I knew he understood. Fast forward four years and this is what we do every night still. I may have adopted him but he rescued me. He still comes to greet me at the door and the first thing I say is, Mama missed you all day and I tell him what a perfect boy he is!

This was a lovely video! Thank you! My Mom watched over my cat when I was in the Army and then during the time I experienced a period of homelessness and every time I came to visit, he remembered me but his reaction was different. In fact, I picked up vibes that he felt abandoned or betrayed. He didn't seem happy to be there and he didn't seem to understand why he was there. When I went to pet him, he sniffed me as if for the first time. My Mom told me he kinda languishes about the house but on a few rare occasions, he jumps on her lap. My Mom loves cats but her patience was short with him. She likes to keep a tidy house and so I frequently would get phone calls how my cat "did something" like scratching her furniture, or jumping on the kitchen counter, or going after her plants, or puking his food and she would always tell me to come get him before she placed him in the shelter. It took me two years to finally get my own home and I was so grateful she held on to him for so long. I was always worried she was going to give up on him and I would never see him again. His first night in my new home was full of anxiety. But after sniffing every crook and cranny of my apartment and seeing how much independence he had compared to what he had at my Mom's house, his anxiety quickly went away and he became the old self I recognized again. I ended up moving from that apartment only six months in (long story) but this time I made sure we stuck together. We drove in the moving van together and he was surprisingly calm the whole way. I always wondered what was going through his mind while he was staring at the road going by but I felt confident this time he trusted that I wasn't going anywhere without him again.

I had a couple of kittens who’d been rescued from a garbage can filling with rain water. One of them ran to the bars of his cage in the shelter and purred his heart out - “Pick Me!” I was in university so I moved regularly. One time I was packing up and I looked around and he was trembling really bad. I picked him up and hugged him and we had some purrs and I got out the carrier. He hopped in and settled right down - just needed to know that he was coming too. Broke my heart that he could think I’d ever leave him, but at least I knew what he needed. It’s not the place - it’s you your kitty loves, and where you are is home ❤❤❤

Definitely needed this. I'm a "dog" person. I've always had and loved dogs. Their "unconditional love" speaks to me. But, as fate would have it, I wound up with a kitty. My son had died at 36. I worked for the company he built. One day, about 2 years later, one of the workmen let me know they'd found something on the grounds under a piece of equipment. Turns out it was this tabby kitten. No sign of a mommy or siblings. The guys all said that Cliff, my son, had sent this gift to give me someone to love. For 3 weeks I cared for her, trying to decide whether I could be mom to a kitty, but I couldn't let go of the notion that my son was somehow connected to this little baby (she was so tiny that the vet couldn't tell her gender!). That was 8 years ago, and I still struggle with "what is our connection". I know she feel safe and she's very well cared for...your videos have helped me A LOT to be a god mommy to her. But she is very independent (though, like your kitty, wherever she may have been hiding before bed time, about 10 minutes after I get in bed, she crawls in next to me. I only hope that she feels love the way I intend it. I'm trying to understand her kitty love language, too!

When a cat comes to you or snuggles in, it's love. It's not unconditional love, but all the sweeter because you've made that bond

Cats absolutely do feel love, and depending on how you treat them *some* cats will act a lot more like dogs than you expect. My old cat Ciri would literally be waiting for me at the door when I came home, follow me everywhere around the house, drag her toys to me when she wanted to play, and she even found me after (and this is a long story that I'm not going to fully go into) I had lost the house we lived in and her (absolutely not my choice and a wild situation outside of my control). But when I came back to the area and started feeding local strays she just appeared one day and walked right into my new residence like she owned the place, despite never being there before. Your cat may not do all of those things, but the fact that she seeks you out and chooses to sleep with you is definitely a sign this cat loves you. If you are looking for any advice on how to play with her more/better/get a closer bond, I'll just say to keep in mind that if you are playing with her with an active toy (like a wand with a string and feathers) just because she walks away does not mean she is done playing! Ciri would often duck around a corner to "hide herself" since cats are ambush predators. "Hiding" the toy (moving it around an object or out of her sight) would make her come running out instantly looking for it, and when she walked around a corner she was using the opportunity to rest and watch it's movements. It's best to have a wide open area to play with them in, but once that has several obstacles and boxes you can use for "cover".

I had a proper test of my cat's memory very recently. Almost a decade ago, when my cat was barely 1 year old my beloved came to visit me from another country. He stayed for only a couple weeks, but during that time my cat LOVED him. When he left, my cat kept looking for him for weeks, crying for him at the front door as he waited for him to come back any day. Well, life happens, school, work, and other events prevent him from visiting and vice versa until just a couple months ago I was actually able to move myself and my cat to go stay with him. My cat had not seen anything of my beloved in all that time. We both wondered if he'd have any memory of him at all but were ok with them just having to form a new relationship too. NOPE! It has been a couple months and it's been the same since the first day. My cat full out LOVES him. He does not care about anyone else who might visit or be in the house, even me. My adorable little dumb dumb cat just wants to scream at and follow my beloved and will instantly start purring the moment he gets attention from him. We 100% are convinced that my kitty remembers him and has been overjoyed to have his buddy back. Also yeah he is my cat, but I've fully accepted that my beloved is my cat's favorite person and I love it. So yeah, my cat has a pretty good memory I think.

My kitties remembered their foster mom who bottle fed them for weeks when they were first rescued. I adopted them after she had raised them for about 10 weeks. When she comes to visit, they act completely different to her than to me, despite that I've had them for YEARS. They will come to her and snuggle and let her hold them, while they will not let me hold them at all. We haven't seen her for several years, now, but they still seem to recognize her voice when we talk on the phone.

My cat has a really good memory. We go for walks every day, so its important that she remembers the rules of the road. No attacking yellow striped bugs, only chase birds away from traffic, don't go under cars, don't get the leash tangled and more of that kind of thing. She is familiar with all the people and dogs she's met. She remembers where she finds things and goes back later to took for them again. Some more than a year later. I can depend on her to catalog all the information she gets. She also remembers all the negative things, so I try to keep interactions always pleasant, although she'll hiss at me from time to time.

My partner and I have a very close bond to our kitties and very strict routines in our everyday life - so usually every time we went on holiday (and some else had to feed our cats) it was pure horror for them and they got very stressed out. That changed when our new neighbour started to take care of them during our summer holidays. She is a real cat person and loved every minute she could spend with our cats - and our cats really loved her back. After two years of covid (without any summer trips) our neighbour visited us one evening - and our cats went crazy about her. They usually ignore every stranger - but they clearly recognized her after two years and spent the whole evening on her side/ on her lap. They both clearly remembered her and the good time they had with her - more than two years ago ❤

Clarence, my orange male tabby, was brought into my life in December 2010 by my sister. She had 3 cats at the time. She was battling stage 4 breast cancer at the time and asked if I would take Clarence. He hid for 2 months after I got him home, I believe he was heartbroken as I had watched him play with my sister every evening when she went to bed. When my sister passed in July 2011, her daughters asked if I would then bring one of her other cats home, Sam. I was concerned about how introducing Sam with Clarence would be, since Clarence had been the only cat in my home for the past 7 months. I brought Sam into the house, still in the carrier and they immediately sniffed each other nose-to-nose. It was a revelation that there was no hissing, no posturing, or any other problems with their reunion! It was like, "Hey I know you, where have you been?" Clarence lays on my lap daily, and often sleeps with us as well. He and I have a more than special relationship, and I think of my wonderful sister everytime he loves me or plays with one of the other 3 cats who now bless our lives!

My grandma had two cats, they were siblings. One experienced trauma (We don’t know exactly what) and the other didn’t. The cat that didn’t experience trauma was very friendly from the day she was adopted to the day she died. The cat that did experience trauma was skittish for many years, only when she was 10+ years old she started to accept affection from the family. It was interesting but also sad

Cats do retain some of their origin even after we take them in and love them. An old boyfriend of mine had two cats, a brother and sister. A feral cat had had kittens in his backyard shed and he'd brought two of them in as soon as they were old enough. The boy fared better; he accepted affection but was still skittish with new people. Once he got to know you he was a love bug. The girl, however, never got over her fear of humans. She would only come out of hiding when he was home alone. I was there all the time for over three years and I rarely saw her. She would come out of hiding sometimes to sleep with us, but as soon as I stirred she was off and running. She was a beautiful, long-haired white cat but her fear and insecurity kept her from grooming herself properly. She was always matted and would only let him brush her on rare occasions. These two cats had been brought in the house at 6-7 weeks of age and had no reason to be afraid. But those first weeks with their feral mother never left them completely. The beautiful female cat hid herself in the house one day and died, and it took him a long time to find her. He smelled what had happened and was devastated when he found her curled up in a tiny ball in a place he didn't know the cats could get to. Even in her last moments she was fearful. She lived to be about ten, while her brother lived a decade longer.

Cat memory anecdote. When I went to Uni (in NL) and lived in a small house, one of my friends cats gave birth to several kittens. I adopted a male and female and took care of them. They where outside cats (as is the majority in NL) and whenever I got back from class I would use a certain kind of whistle to let them know I was home. Within 5 mins they would apppear and do the cat affection stuff. Years go by and I went to the big city to work, living in an appartment. No place for an outside cate so I donated my male cat (the female was RIP) to my parents who lived rural with a big garden. Every now and then I visited my parents. And if my cat wasn't home I would go outside and do my whistle. And sure, within 5min he would be there, doing the cat affection stuff. At that time I wasn't the food provider, so no reason to associate me with food. My cat was just glad to see me.

I took care of my sister's friend's cat for about 3 years. While she deployed. Sometimes when she was able to return she would always come and see her cat. This cat is so sweet and way too friendly. Incredibly happy social cat. While I had him she had returned and brought her sister. He hadn't seen the sister in a few years. In the past, while she was deployed, her sister had taken care of her cat. This cat's demeanor immediately changed when he saw the sister. He ran to hide. I went and got him brought him back he took off to hide. He hid and he waited until this woman left. I don't know what trauma this poor cat was subjected to when he was being cared for by this woman. He had never acted like that and the whole time I had him he never was anything but friendly and social. I don't know what she did to him.

Back when my husband and I were first married, his job sent us out of the country. We couldn't take our pets with us. The cat spent about 2 years living with my father. When we finally brought him home, he walked through the entire house, which was a different house than the one we'd lived in before. He sniffed everything. Then he walked back into the living room, jumped on my lap and began purring. It was not his custom to jump on my lap, so I was surprised. My interpretation was that he remembered us and our scent and was happy he was finally home.

I wonder that about mine too, but he was practically a baby. Just 4 weeks old. But, when I would feed him a slurry of formula and wet food his face would get messy, so I’d have a cloth and warm water ready, and I’d gently wipe his face clean. Immediately after, every time, he’d curl up on top of me and fall asleep. Now he’s 4 years old, but still if he gets in my lap to take a nap, he will put his face in the air expecting me to rub it in the same motion I used to wash his face when he was a baby. After I do he purrs, gets a peaceful expression, and falls asleep. So I feel like some kind of memory of babyhood is locked in there, even if it’s just a sense of comfort in his subconscious.

My father liked to garden every day and noticed a small cat following him around the garden. When he would rest on the swing the cat would sit on his shoulder while he rocked the swing. After some months my father developed dementia and could no longer garden. I thought maybe she would be a great therapy cat since they had a relationship. I spayed her and brought her inside. That cat ( monkey) stayed with him like a dog. When he became bedridden she slept with him. When he passed, she stayed outside his door. You could tell she was lost. My dad passed Oct 2021 and I still find her outside his door. I try to give her extra love, but she still looks like she feels displaced. I have my cat and my mom has hers. As crazy as this may sound. I think my cat can "feel" or "hear" my thoughts. For example, remembering when my cat almost died from illness and the struggle to keep him alive while we're snuggling together, I sense he knows what I'm remembering. Or at least, he senses a change in my "mood". They're very perceptive

My Houdini kitty magically "appeared" on my porch on December 27th, 2020, right after one of the saddest, loneliest Xmas ever. He was about 6 months old and a beautiful black and white tuxedo cat. He is very sweet, playful, and is obsessed with water. He would drop toys in his water bowl (or the toilet) so he could fish them back out again. He loves it when I drop an ice cube in the water dish so he can play with it until it disappears. The weird thing is I live way out in the boonies, my closest neighbor is over a mile away. There is a community about 5-6 miles away where a guy with a horse ranch lets his cats have lots of kittens so that the cats will kill mice. These kitties are often killed by predators, the lucky ones go looking for new, better homes. I think that is where he came from, because a lady over there was adopted by a female cat around the same time, about the same age who looks a lot like him. We both posted pics to compare, they are almost twins. Then another lady chimed in and told me, "Your boy looks just like the cat who stole the koi fish from my pond!" I think it's likely he was the culprit, especially considering how much he loves to eat fish.

I loved this video as it covered stuff I've often thought about. One of my cats likes to accompany my daughter and I on walks. Where I live, twice a week, we need to pull our wheelie bins along a lane to a point where the bin lorry can access them. My youngest cat always knows when it's 'bin day' and waits for us up on the bin lid then scampers along beside us. We go further into a wooded park (no roads to cross) where he happily accompanies us on a walk. Sometimes he puts on an acrobatic display in the trees, sometimes he stops and flops and likes to be carried for a while. Sometimes he even tries to get us to follow him through the thicker bushes where he knows the birds are. He doesnt seem to understand that we're too big and looks quite disappointed when we say we can't follow him there. It's clear he wants to share something that's special to him with us. I adore our walks together and I think so does he. I definitely think he 'remembers' when it's bin day (or recognises the signs at least) but I just wonder what he thinks the purpose of these walks are. I like to think he sees it as fun times showing his humans his world. Whatever it is, it's special.

If I leave my bedroom (where we spend most of our time together) for more than 2 minutes she either stands at the top of the stairs and waits for me or comes down to find me, she sleeps in my room 99% of the time, if I go to the bathroom she whines for me to come out. She greets me every night when I come home from work and every morning when I open my eyes. I would like to think it's bc she was a stray before coming to live in my house. She just walked up onto my porch, sat at my feet, looked up and meowed at me. So maybe she remembers that I saved her and that's why she's attached herself to me. I adopted my sweet calico rescue when she was two years old, on June 3, 2017. I had found at the City adoption day, where her foster mom was offering some kitties for adoption. My cat was not present, she was still too sick to travel in a carrier for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I followed the evolution of her health condition until she was ready for adoption. Since adopting her, I have kept in touch with her foster mom. When she has a hard time, like losing a kitten, I give her news of one of her success stories to cheer her up. In ay 2019, on the City adoption day, I took my kitty to visit her foster mom. As soon as she held my cat against her heart, my sweet kitty knew whose arms she was in. She started sniffing her foster mom like she was the most beautiful perfume she could remember. Then, she settled in her saviour's arms, and she did not mind being in a crowded place. She has the same reaction to my daughter and her youngest daughter who both accompanied me to her foster mom's home, the day I adopted her. Somehow she knew that she was in good hands with us three. When I first took her home, she showed me immediately that she knew what to do with the carpeted roof of her kitty cottage. She had seen something similar before. She later showed me every time that she recognized something she had known in her previous life. Although I do not understand a lot of what she says, if I take the time to look at her when she makes her various sounds and moves, I can sense when she is telling me that she is experiencing something that reminds her of her past life.

My life is quite difficult because of Multiple Sclerosis, disablity, trauma and other things- but with your video's for a little while I feel happy and at peace- and sorta at ''home'' in a silly odd way :)

For humans, scent is also a big component of memory. Sometimes I walk down a street somewhere, maybe at a market, or I visit someones house, and I smell something that takes me back to a memory from 20 years ago that I had forgotten completely but due to that smell I remember it in every detail.

When I was a teenager my mom had a cat, well ok to be fair she was really my cat. I can’t really remember how long we had her, but it was years. So when I was 17 I joined the Army and left for basic and ait. I was gone for 6 months and went home for a short time before I left for my active duty station. I was really lookin forward to seeing Frisco, the cat, on my way home. I got home, picked her up, and she hissed at me then pee’d on me… lol I have no doubt she knew exactly who I was, and she was REALLY mad at me for leaving! Didn’t take her long to warm back up to me but I’ve never forgotten that greeting. She was a truly great cat, rip Frisky.

My friend knows exactly which cabinets his treats and catnip are kept. He is only about a 2 years old now however when he was about 6 months he watched me go to one cabinet for his treats and put it together that the yummies where kept in there knocking on that door when he wants one. Then around a year old I gave him catnip for the first time in a toy which were kept in another cabinet. The toy didn't last very long however some 8 or 9 months since tossing the catnip toy he still goes to that cabinet expecting the toy. Which does not prove life long memory but that is really an indicator of retention of long term memories.

My little girl is the same, I have to keep moving her treats, treats or catnip, and sometimes even I forget where I put them. I even had one kitty that could unscrew the catnip bottle to get, which that bottle disappeared and I had to put her treats in a screw top container because she would steal the bag and chew into it, that was before I learned she could open the screw top container, found it void of treats. I have fibromyalgia in my hands badly so, I can't use lock top containers. It's funny that I never get to catch them in the act but only the aftermath

I've no doubt my cat remembers when we first met. She's the kind of cat who keeps a bit of distance to humans, even ones she clearly really likes - but I've been the sole exception since the very first time we met at the shelter. She absolutely hated being at the shelter, so I think it's only logical to assume that she bonded closely with me really quickly because I was the one who got her out of there, and she has continued to make an exception with me over time because she still associates me with that positive change in her life. Her previous guardian described her as 'content with spending time alone,' but she is quite literally at my side at all hours of the day. No matter how her little animal brain processes memory, it's clear the result is the same as my own - the two of us becoming family was one of the best things that ever happened to either of us.

My oldest black remembers a lot. He has always watched the widows for frogs and lizards I would call him. We moved to a different state and I can still call him to a window in the new house and tell him frog and he will come running. He also realized that he had to go from a window in one room to a window in another room to see an animal walking in the yard outside. My cats are all inside, no frog or lizard was harmed in the game.

I have a fenced in back yard and my cats are poliet enough to stay within the bounds, so durring they day I'll open the door and let them out to wander. A year ago, when I just started, one of my cats didn't realize that the heat could get to her, so even though the door was open, she stayed outside until she was too hot to move. I was near by so I brought her in and cooled her down - lesson learned for me: no more unsupervised outside time... But thankfully, she seems to have learned from the experience! She doesn't go out when it's super hot, and if it gets hot while shes out, she *always* immediately comes inside, gets a drink, and roles around on the cold tiles. It's crazy to me that she knows so well how to take care of herself... They think so differently to you and me, but they still have memories and thoughts that I can't even imagine. So cool!!

2 stories related to this: 1) I helped bottle feed our cat Tiger when he was a kitten, so I've always been one of his favorite people. I went to college out of state for a while, and when Mom was packing up a box to send to be that included my dress coat, Tiger hopped into the box, laid down, and looked at her like "this is my spot now". She emailed me the picture after she told me about it. 2) I was gifted a kitten 2 years ago after my cat went missing; his name is Bastion. My husband and I quickly realized that Bastion was too high energy for our older cat and started looking for a playmate for him. After 4 months of not having any luck-people kept claiming the kittens before us-we talked to my mother-in-law, who gave us Bastion, to see if any of his siblings were still available. His sister Celeste was, so after they got her spayed, we went to meet up with them and pick her up. Bastion's first reaction to a new cat in the house was guarded, until she got close enough that he could smell her. His mood instantly changed; the ears and tail came up, and he immediately wanted to play. They're still basically inseparable.

My cats both know exactly what time they are to be fed. The internal clocks in these animals is remarkable! And every cat owner knows you can't say the word 'treat' in front of them. We have to spell it, and we're pretty sure they're catching on to that.

I travel and camp a lot with my cat. I’ve noticed he seems to remember spots. At new places he’s more cautious and checks things out from the truck for a while. If we’ve been there before he’s usually out and about immediately. I make a note of places he enjoys and we return when in the area. It’s fun watching his reaction. He gets excited and even seems to recognize some spots as we’re pulling up.

I believe you 100%. My 7 year-old neutered male tabby Rudy attempts to vocalize words and often succeeds. He has a specific sound when calling to me that sounds remarkably like my name, can say "out," and raises the pitch at the end of a meow to indicate that he's asking a question. After living with humankind for 5000 years, I suspect that our little feline buddies have learned a thing or two about human language, just as we have learned to minmic their purr.

We like to romanticize the relationship to our feline friends and also their behaviour a lot. But you are exaggerating it way too much. Cats dont posses a language center like humans do nor do they have the vocal cords and mouth shape needed to speak human language. They can distinguish some human vocals from another so they can learn the difference between "no" and their name. They are also able to notice difference in tone. But they can not speak nor are they trying to speak thats is nothing more than your hopefull perception of your twisted memories.

Recently I've had to rehome my cats temporarily with family. I want able to visit them for a little over a month and I wondered if they would remember me. It turns out, yes they do remember me. Now I've gone to stay with that family for a short while and both cats are glued to me. They also fight over my lap, which I wish was big enough for both of them. I don't like them to fight. But I am very happy to know that they remember who mommy is and that they want to spend time with me. It will be a while before I can get a place of my own and bring them to live with me, but at least I know they still remember who I am. It would have broken my heart to come here and have them not remember. I love my boys.

I have 2 rescue cats. One I got when she was still a kitten and the other when she was roughly a year old. I totally believe kitty (the older rescue) remembers that she was severely struggling to survive outside. She was all skin and bones when I brought her inside. And from how she is with me (separation anxiety and all) she is now a “Velcro cat”. I truly believes she remembers the poor situation she was in before she came into my life. And I also believe that’s why she’s a “Velcro cat”

Kobe & Kasey… only 2 months apart in age. I adopted Kobe 1st, but soon realized he needed a play mate. Along came Kasey. They did everything together and we’re best friends. Just shy of 10 years old Kobe got cancer. We all said our goodbyes to him here at home with Kasey by his side taking his last breath. He walked around him, sniffed him, and then looked up at me with eyes that said “it’s ok.” That was three years ago. I kept some of Kobe‘s fur. Kasey will see me sad at times and it is like he’s asking me what’s wrong…. I grab Kobe’s fur and open the bag for Kasey…. There’s absolutely no question that he remembers and knows that is Kobe’s smell. And he gives me the same look “it’s ok”He’s the best.
