Jackson, I followed your advice for how to get your cat to let you sleep through the night. I thought my cat was the exception-that nothing would work. But guess what, within 4 days of consistency on my part, my cat fully stopped meowing through the night. We no longer get woken up by her. Thank you so much for your videos!

The "just ignore them" thing is soooo hard but it definitely works. I accidentally left Nova's dehydrated meat soaking on the counter and she got at it one night, and for the next week or so, she kept jumping up on the counter which is not a behaviour I want! But after 5-6 days of me not responding and her finding nothing, she stopped doing it again. Ignoring a cat is kind of like quitting smoking: the first week is the hardest :P

I will say to the cupboard thing, its not always about treats/food. My cat tries to open every cupboard and drawer when she wants attention while I'm working, because she knows I can hear it. My senior cat wants (and needs) extra attention. -- Lately, he's started getting between me and the keyboard and screen, and he lies down and wants attention. I have gotten really lucky that my cat takes cues from my routine instead of time or her own desires. She knows she gets breakfast AFTER I am ready for the day regardless of me getting up at 6am or 10am. She has never once tried to wake me up because me waking up doesn’t mean food. She also knows that when I get home from work she gets a hello snuggle and then I go change clothes. Only after I am out of my work clothes does she get food so she won’t ask for it until I am done. If she’s not getting and afternoon snack today then we skip the behavioral cue. That means we can do routines whenever we want because her cue comes from our behavior. It’s much easier than trying to stick to a cat routine. Just incorporate your cat’s needs into your routine.

No amount of ignoring him works, so I'm just genuinely at my wit's end. (The puzzle toy IS nice, but doesn't stop him from yelling for what he wants - which is usually to go outside - and he DOES get to go outside, but he can't be out there ALL the time. Now the kitten is learning from him, to start crying and scratching the door to go out.) The babies are hyper intelligent, and know that if they just keep meowing louder, eventually we can't take it anymore.

Thank you for this sir! Honestly my husband and I were struggling with this problem with our cat where she does bad things we yell at her and she just goes and does it a seconds later.

It sounds like something young children do... Play up, and get your attention, you respond, they get what they want. So ignoring it, means they aren't playing you... Totally makes sense. It's why I call mine children in fur coats. Cool tips Jackson.

I have 4 Savannah's (F3) cats. They really challenge you. Extremely smart and resourceful. Bad behavior. Such as demolishing things. They know you respond to that. It's for Savannah's extra attention, they always want more attention and play. In two hours of play they are not tired. Savannah cat are so active, but always loyal and friendly

My cat just runs around doing this - he doesn't always want anything. He does have me trained in the mornings tho to let him out. These two are very much like my two - the laid-back black kitty (who's also older) and the bratty teen b&w. Unfortunately, he can't just be loose at night because of the dog.

After watching this, I realized that my husband was right and one of our cats has me wrapped around his little paw. I hate it when he’s right. 😂 I’m going to have to re-watch this and start implementing the tips! 👍

Jackson Galaxy is not just the c Cat Daddy, hey is the cats meow, by this I mean is teachings of all that he has learned about cat the way in which he teaches us the things we're doing wrong or right, is whith a good sense of humor ( this the reason he has the ability to laugh at himself); He also qualifies for excellence in acting dress, in his own style which is cool! But everything he shares with us is from experience, whether it be good experience in his lifetime or not so good experience! Jackson Galaxy seems to be a down to earth truthful cat dude! Cool cat dude is that! Thank you for all you do, thank you for all you share with us, and thank you for all the learning and teaching experience!

My cats used to meow urgently at my bedroom door, over and over again. Ignoring it didn't work, so what I would do is open it, say hello, and then close it again. They learned pretty quick that meowing would not get them in here. (I can't let them in here because they get up to trouble. Always.)

My cat yowls at night often, especially if it is windy. She thinks her reflection in the porch door is another cat, and the wind makes her think there are trespassers in the backyard. She'll pace around our family room, returning repeatedly to the door. I don't give her treats for it. I do try to distract her with toys. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. What she really wants is to be allowed out on the porch, but she's only allowed on the closed-in porch during the day. I don't give in and let her out, although my dad has a couple times unfortunately.

Jackson- I set up a storage crate so young Lily (a blue tortie) could jump from the bed to the window, where I added a catway board to the sill, and jump to a nap basket on top of a storage crate stack. She is such a good jumper now, that she greets me when I come home by leaping to my shoulder and nuzzling both cheeks. (is she French?) Thank you for your advice- she's my first indoor cat (I couldn't face having another cat killed by a dog) and I never knew I could be this close to a cat.

I do this all the time. Butterscotch is my leader lol. He looks at me with those pleading eyes and I melt. I wake up early in morning to give him whatever he wants and play with him whenever he wants. I’m not strong enough to tell him no (well at least follow thru with the word no)

Mr Stripes, my childhood cat, had Grandma absolutely whipped whenever she would visit us for 3-4 days, usually a long weekend. We kept the cat treats in this one pantry, there were claw marks on the door where he'd try to break in. He'd pace, meow, try to get us to open that door to feed him a treat, but we just generally ignored him unless it was bed time and we had to lock him into his layer, the rec room and garage. He knew that time of night, knew he was getting a treat, knew the ritual of getting locked up. He really didn't pester us cause we ignored him, but when Grandma came around, she sat in the den watching TV or reading most of the day, that cat would howl at the pantry, she'd swear at the cat, feed him a treat every 20 minutes to get him to shut up, then he'd howl again at the pantry for a treat, she'd get up, feed him another treat, swear at him. Cat had Grandma trained, that was the ONLY person he'd howl at the pantry for treats lol. Didn't see her for 4-6 months, within 30 minutes of her in the house he'd start howling by the pantry for a treat.

Its really more of a natural dominance dance between owner and cat living in a living space. I admit to being a fiddle for her to play with and boy can she play a remarkable melody, only thing is, I enjoy it as much as she does. When she demands her dinner at lunch time so be it but she seems to always regret it come dinner time. 😉😋

FYI, cats pawing at cabinets isn't necessarily for food. i've never kept cat treats stored in my cabinets, but i have a cat who will try to get inside by kitchen and bathroom cabinets anyway when he's excited and bored. for him, it's a forbidden, novel place to explore, and he likes being inside small, cozy spaces. (and as someone mentioned in another comment, if he makes enough noise trying to open the doors, he knows i'll come to give him attention, which reinforces the behavior.) i have to be careful closing my dresser drawers, because sometimes he'll hide inside those, too.

This was very helpful - I got a cat during COVID (not on impulse!) and I think in the early days I was so keen to meet her needs (violin) that she sort of calls the shots now by just sitting under my chair and staring with a rumble every now and then. 95% of the time I'm happy to take a break and play but as you said, eventually we're going back to work and she'll be really confused and abandoned :(

hello Jackson ! can you please make a video about how is it ok or not to leave your cat alone when you're on holidays ? I've met several people who told me they just left their cat ( it's a cat ! they can survive like this! )alone with enough food/water, and how their cat behavior might have changed afterwards. It's maybe for 3 days but someone told me 3 weeks !!! i feel in my stomach that's not ok ! thanks for your videoooos, bisous from France !

I’ve heard Jackson tell us that it is not ok to leave your cat alone with a bowl of food and water. They might survive but their personalities will change and there will lose trust in you. I damaged their minds as well as your relationship with your pet. They need contact with humans
