Father Mike, I haven't been to confession in about 3 years. Last night I had a weird dream about sins I had committed in my youth that I had forgotten about, all these things were laid out in front of me. I was trying to hide but everything was revealed to me as if I was at heavens gate and I was seeing my sinful life before me. When I awoke at 6:30am I had coffee and then strangely I coughed up blood. I am going to see a doctor about why I coughed up blood, but I am also going to confession this week... Thank you for posting this.

One commits a mortal sin when there are simultaneously present: grave matters, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. It can be forgiven in the ordinary way by means of the Sacrament of Baptism and of Penance. If unrepentant, it leads us to the eternal damnation. One commits venial sin when the matter is less serious, or even if it grave, when full knowledge or complete consent are absent. It merits temporal punishment which purifies.

Try to do an examination of conscious every night before bed. Anytime you realize you have sinned, admit it to Jesus and say an Act of Contrition.
@carolynalameida7094 ай бұрын
A couple weeks ago after my confession, the priest told me to sit before the Eucharist (we were having adoration) and say the Act of Contrition slowly. I did so multiple times. The line that really convicted me was, "... and to avoid whatever leads me to sin." Of course I love all the lines, but when I consider things that lead me to sin, it totally helps me to order my activities and examine my conscience.

We met a Catholic deacon on a retreat who was an attorney and a judge. He compared sins to crimes and how there are different penalties between a misdemeanor (venial sin) and a felony (mortal sin). So, even in the secular world, there IS a difference in the gravity!

Thank you Father Schmitz for brother priest from Kenya with the example which I embellished to distinguish between venial and mortal sins: Venial sin: I stole a rope. Mortal sin: I stole a rope that was around the neck of a cow that belonged to my physically disabled mom and dying dad! Anyone else agree: We can't receive what we reject: We can't receive forgiveness~if we reject God's mercy? Don't tell me God won't give you hell if you ask for it! Sunday, September 3, 2023 Jesus through Mary through Father Mike Schmitz, we receive instruction from God Almighty! Please God! Melt the the icy hardness of our hearts! Praying "Memorare" that you and I and everyone reading this will pray this intention: the desire to take the log out of our eye before we take the splinter in others however, I know we are still morally responsible for prudentially speaking the truth in the face of evil and silence is not an option all the time! Happy Birthday, little brother Fred - Aw, thus far most hopeful message of the Gospel ever: God wants to forgive our sins! Refusing to accept God's mercy in forgiveness and repentance is the only blasphemous sin that the Holy Spirit can't forgive because reject God's love!

FOR CATHOLICS A CONFESSOR IS AN IMPORTANT MEDIATOR ONLY I BELIEVE !!!! BUT I THANK FR MIKE FOR TRYING TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT WE NEED TO GO TO CONFESSION TO HAVE OUR SINS FORGIVEN !!!!
@doloreswisecarver1784 Жыл бұрын
Day 247 takeaways: . For a sin to be mortal, there are three conditions- it has to be GRAVE MATTER; one has to have FULL KNOWLEDGE as written into the heart of every human being; one has to freely choose the sin without being forced or coerced. Mortal sins kill the charity in one’s heart of love of God. Venial sins do not destroy the life of God in our souls, but they wound us. This makes it easier for the evil one that mortal blow. A bunch of sins can weigh us down so much that mortal sin becomes the next clear step. There are a number o reasons why the Church has never made a list of mortal sins because there are factors that can affect the gravity of sin. In confession one must include all of the relevant details that could affect the severity of the offense. There are factors like relationships, circumstances, the number of times, amounts that mitigate one’s culpability. Sins however, are of a grave nature when they violate God or the dignity of a human person. Examples are taking the Lord’s name in vain; missing Mass; dealing in the occult all violate God. Things like rape and abortion violate human dignity. We can judge an act itself as a GRAVE OFFENSE, but we can never judge the state of a Person’s Soul. We must entrust judgement of persons to the justice and mercy of God. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not diminish but increase the voluntary character of a sin. God wants to forgive us of our sins. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is when one does not accept God’s Mercy by repenting. It’s clinging tightly to the sin by refusing to let God forgive us.
@glenapereira3492 Жыл бұрын
Venial sin is sin that wounds, Mortal sin is sin that kills. Three requirements for sin to be mortal: it has to be a GRAVE MATTER; done with FULL KNOWLEDGE ; and with FULL CONSENT OF THE WILL. Grave sins are those that directly violate God and the dignity of the human person, by our hardness of heart, choosing not to care and pretending ignorance. Blasphemy is the deliberate refusal to accept God's mercy by not repenting and rejecting the forgiveness of our sins and accepting the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. So lets trust in God and his mercy. Ask him to convict us of our sins and go to confession. 🙏 🙏

Well-Being, a foundation for secular morality, has been used, universally, since the 17th century. When people, not governments or leaders of countries, are asked to give an understanding of how well-being is used, the answers are within the parameter of common understanding. Gallup has conducted a number of polls for financial, physical, community, career and social well-being in many countries and found remarkable results, if you care to look them up. Yes well-being is universally understood, is not vague when asked specific questions and I would consider most, if not all, moral behaviour to encompass well-being as a measurement, or scale, both quantitative and qualitative.

What is "immoderate laughter"?
@MorreHope Жыл бұрын
Yesterday, I was on the podium by the altar and the servers; a retired couple; were laughing at the priest; but was not distracted; and they were carrying on; because: the man was doty; like in the movie; like Princess Bride. The priest was 90; and the other priest; in the first pew in the audience is 90 too. BUT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE PECULIAR; YOU HAVE TO KEEP YOUR COMPOSURE; BECAUSE: THE PRIEST HAS TO CHANGE THE BREAD TO JESUS; AND WHAT A PITY IF THESE PEOPLE SUCCEEDED; THAT THE BREAD WAS NOT CHANGED. NOW I THINK; I WOULD HAVE WASTED MY TIME CONSUMING THE PRESENCE; IN THAT IT IS SHARED WITH THE PEOPLE IN PURGATORY. SO, I AM SPIRITUALLY HURT; THOUGH I AM HAPPY; AND SKIPPING THE HILLS OF GLORY. I did not mean to keep it all caps. But maybe I am happy in the cape of Mary; who is the mother eagle of Rev 12; and we are in her cape; the eaglets. No immoderate laughter shall separate us from those in purgatory; - who need the mass. We join with them. We join with Fr. Mike when he does mass; of course. He opens the floor with remembering the sick.

Can someone, Catholic, answer for me something. I was told by a fellow Catholic that in mass we ask 3 times for forgiveness and that this handles venial sins and that not all venial sins need to be confessed unless you just are repeating them. Is this true? As a convert I worry that recently I had this minor sin, venial sin, and I was unsure if I should take communion because I know that you should come with a clean heart for the Holy Eucharist, but then others said that the three time and the Eucharist are like medicine for the soul. Can someone help me understand... Thanks

When it comes to this question, I have always been told that, regardless, you should always try to just make it to Reconciliation. It never hurts. But do so the next time you are able. Someone else correct me if I’m wrong, but you can still receive the Eucharist if it is a venial sin. But that you should still go to the sacrament of confession as soon as you are able. Why not? Go let God shower His graces upon you all the more. It never hurts.

Don't ever let venal sin keep you from the Eucharist. Yes, it's true that pur venial sins can be forgiven at Mass. Please remember though that like Father shared, many venial sins weakens our Catholic Christian walk, our moral fortitude, and growth in the virtues. As the other commenter shared there's so many graces to be had to help us on our journey to heaven by the reception of any of the Sacraments. We Need them. We are weak and fallen creatures. I have a problem believing that missing Mass is a mortal sin. It seems to me God would want us to WANT to go to Mass, not because it’s a mortal sin. Is it still a mortal sin if I don’t believe it should be?

😊have you seen the vid called This is wut happens at the mass? It is on yt with special effects and it is totally cool. Also, Fr Mike has a yt vid A Roman Catholic Teaching Mass but it is posted by Fr Timothy Lange. It is absolutely beautiful. After watching videos like that I want to go to mass as often as I can.😊

@@SueTaylor-i4dI see, my apologies if I offended you, it was certainly not my intention. What a blessing it is to be in the choir. ❤❤❤

@@KB_2161 oh my gosh, no u didn’t offend me. If I didn’t know abt those programs for the Mass, I would’ve wanted to. I did take one. I just don’t believe it should be a mortal sin. God said to keep holy the Lords Day. There are other ways to keep it holy for example not doing any work on that day.

A serious question: If non-Catholics don't confess their sins to a priest, is that considered a sin against the Holy Spirit?

That’s a great question! I’m not sure so hopefully CIY will respond.

So really more like a continuum of six levels of sin? Venal->Vice->Grave->Mortal->Capital->Deadly? Which leads back to other Venal? No wonder we need Christ!

It is difficult to believe even the hint of desecrating the body and blood of Jesus Christ, in any manner 'symbolic' or real, is pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God. Yet, at the end of Sunday service, many protestant and mormon churches, with full knowledge and consent the entire church leadership, the ‘blessed’ and ‘sanctified’ (meaning made Holy for a sacred purpose) ‘left-over’ bread and grape juice/wine/water, is unceremoniously and quietly thrown out like common trash and/or poured down the drain into the sewer. Our neighbor, southern baptist pasture Dan said; "Yeah, we throw the left-overs out, it doesn't mean anything anyway". In contrast, most Americans would treat an old worn out American flag with more respect than the symbol of the body and blood of Jesus Christ after Sunday service. Mormons would treat old worn out sacred garments (underwear) with more respect, by first removing the sacred 'masonry' symbols from the garment before disposal, than they would the symbol of the body and blood of Jesus Christ after Sunday service.
