In this episode of The Catholic Gentleman, Sam and John discuss a great Catholic tradition of building and maintaining libraries. This tradition stems back to the early Church, and we have an obligation to maintain it today. Find out why every gentleman should cultivate a personal library of his own.

I read through the books I borrow from local libraries. Then, I make a mental note to purchase them (physical copies, of course) at a later time if I decide that they are worth keeping. That little economic strategy might be good to consider for some people. Great show, gentlemen.

Building a library is great... as long as you actually read them. A lot of people just gather them, stack them up but read very little.

Agreed. We have to be on-guard against the consumerist trend to merely acquire for some outward appearance or status. Here in the Western World this mindset has been ingrained within us. Blessings!

Augustine wrote like 12000 pages, you literally can't read everything, doesn't mean you can't collect things, especially when you are a parent, heck my church has given me like 3 copies of one single scott hahn and brant pitre book

This Catholic lady traditional work from home with a very active kitchen very much appreciates your high quality content very glad you are doing - the Catholic gentleman - as men have been bulldozed by feminism bringing us all into the terrible state we find ourselves in the west currently. Sharing now to all friends and going over to Paterson as this is a very crucial apostolate. PS read my way into the one true Faith then hubby and I converted by reading.

GK Chesterton should go into your library - He writes apologetics, poetry, novels, etc. love reading his work. The American Story: The Beginnings by David and Tim Barton is a great historical book that examines American history through the lens of God working providentially in the founding of our country.

To this I must add the preservation, translation, commentary, and retransmission of Classical works from Baghdad's House of Wisdom, a critical path to saving many Greek writings. Other Islamic authorities in Morocco and El Andalus (Spain) also contributed.

Every person should try to cultivate the habit of reading, and LIMIT his TV and internet time. Reading books (not comic books) is a great habit. TV is no match for it.

What about audiobooks how do you compare them to physical and kindle books?
@TheCatholicGentleman
@TheCatholicGentleman 2 ай бұрын
Hi @ajgaming7435, great question. I can say that we must start by knowing ourselves. Due to the nature of social media and our modern lifestyles most individuals have been conditioned out of being able to read for extended periods of time. This is a muscle and habit that needs to be trained. As such, reading along with audiobooks, or just listening to audiobooks can be a great way to train yourself. I know that both Sam and I enjoy audiobooks. However, physical books carry a visual reminder to us to stop what we are doing and read. If you are father, it also sets forth the importance of reading and growing in knowledge to your children (albeit, you have to actually read them :) ). Sam and I have discussed kindle books as well and we both personally struggle to commit to reading in that format. Not that it is not possible but removing ourselves from electronics as frequently as possible is a goal. Blessings, John
