A couple of years ago, someone stole an electronic device from my kid at the Catholic school he attended. I looked for a prayer on the web to get back something stolen from you and, somehow, I found the prayer to Saint Dismas. I printed it and gave it to my son and asked him to pray with faith and say a Hail Mary and Our Father too (following the instructions given with the prayer). He told me he did say the prayer to Saint Dismas that night. The next day he went to school and left his backpack outside the room where he was taking a class, like everyone always do (they are not allowed to have their bags inside their rooms). When he came out of the classroom, he opened the pocket where the electronic device was stolen the day before and, to his surprise, the "thief" returned it. We talked about St. Dismas that day and the power of prayer. Saint Dismas, pray for us🙏

I have heard that Christ's head is always tilted to the right, but I have found that this isn't always true. There are numerous crucifixes out there with the head tilted the other way. Once I found out about St Dismus however, I loved this story so much, I stopped buying rosaries or crucifixes with the head leaning the wrong way. Great show guys, keep it up.

3:07 There's a similar legend which I know of regarding Saint Dismas (as described by one of the mystics of the Catholic Church) is that when the Holy Family were fleeing for Egypt, they were met by a band of thieves. But for some reason, they felt compassion to them that they allowed them to stay in their cave. The leader of the thieves had a son who had sores in his body. When the wife saw Mary bathing the infant Jesus, she asked if she can let her son bathe in the same "bathtub" as with Jesus. Mary obliged and at that point the sores of the baby's body were healed. News of this healing went to the leader of the thieves and they were amazed with the Holy Family that they repented of their sins and gave them food for their journey to Egypt. That baby who was healed when he bathed with the infant Jesus was Saint Dismas.

Thank you for a wonderful podcast. I love St. Dismas, but could never find much about him. I had heard the legend about him protecting the Holy Family at one point during their journey to Egypt, but not that he had fed and provisioned them for the journey. Neither had I heard of Mary telling him of the grace he would later receive. That is awesome! One thing that always struck me that wasn't mentioned was how Jesus' heart must have been consoled to have someone believe and confess that belief in Him during His suffering--and believe enough to ask to be taken with Him into his kingdom. What a balm that must have been for Jesus, when so many people had abandoned, betrayed or were mocking Him. God bless and Happy Easter!

I LOVE San Dimas. I really wish his cultus and story are spread to more people, especially those in prison. The joke is, he was so good of a thief he stole his way into Heaven! Seriously though, his is an amazing story. I have always imagined him going down with Our Lord to Sheol to free the Righteous Dead. St. Dismas The Penitent Thief, also known as the Good Thief, Grateful Thief or the Thief on the Cross, is one of two unnamed thieves in Luke's account of the crucifixion of Jesus in the New Testament. The Gospel of Luke describes him asking Jesus to "remember him" when Jesus arrives at his kingdom. As Luke tells us, Jesus was crucified with two thieves. As the three condemned were dying, one taunted Jesus along with the crowd, telling him, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us.” The other thief rebuked him, saying, “Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”Jesus told him, “This day you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). On March 25, the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Annunciation. March 25, however, is also listed as the feast day of St. Dismas, who was the good thief crucified with Jesus.

Hey guys! I really love the program! New subscriber! In the closing comments you spoke of Luke 23:43: He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” I had heard an interesting take on this from my parish priest. It was told to me that punctuation (in particular, commas) did not exist in the Greek translations. By simply moving the comma to AFTER the word today we get a whole new context and do so without changing the phrasing one bit. He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise.” Just a thought to hopefully add to a wonderful discussion! I really like the program and the format is awesome. You are all very well informed and you allow just enough banter to keep each other grounded! Thanks and I look forward to more material. God bless!

It helps the fight when your able to do your best . but how hard a burden when you fall short ! Usually I watch right when an episode is released but things being hectic by the grace of God I found this powerful message ... I've missed many masses becouse I sob at mass. I was raised you don't show weekness and if I cried after being hit I was hit harder. Also When I receive Euchrist I want it in my hand. I see Christ's pierced heart or a bloody chuck of flesh in my hands , I feel the weight!! if it was just bread it wouldn't be that heavy. I have social phobia so the anxiety of being stared at .ive almost fainted many times. So I wouldn't go to mass . I was over 30 when I found out not going was a sin. Then I rejoiced when covid made it normal. These sins made me dread hell and so fearful which can be grounding but with disabilities like mine how easy the evil lies can bring despair. 10:48 How is it that OUR LORD who resides on the throne of MERCY AND GRACE, WHO WHEN HE INSTITUTED HIS CHURCH THROUGH HIS DEATH, A CHURCH WHO'S MEMBERSHIP THEREIN AFFORDS US ETERNAL LIFE "IN THE FLESH", WOULD BE A HARDCASE BECAUSE A PARTICULAR PERSON'S RECORD OF BAPTISM IS NOT FOUND TO BE HELD BY A PRIEST. YOU KNOW? IF A PERSON PRAYS FERVENTLY ENOUGH , ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THEY RECOGNIZE THEIR OWN, EVIL , SHORTCOMINGS, DEFECTS , SINS, ALL THE BAD STUFF THAT COMES FROM BEING HUMAN, WHO IS TO SAY HE LACKS MERCY FOR THE LONELY? WRITING IT MAKES ME WEEP TO THINK THAT THERE ARE THOSE WHO DONT KNOW MERCY. HARD TO EXPRESS CLEARLY.

The apocryphal writing he is talking about is the Proto Gospel of St James. Dismas made a deal with Gestus to give him a lot of money for letting them pass with out alerting the rest of the bandits.

I don’t know it you have discuss this before. I have Almaty wondered if Man kind had freewill but the Angels didn’t, then how could the Archangel Lucifer choose by freewill to go against God and revolt against Him?

St Augustine believed that in Genesis when God created Light and divided it from the darkness, this was a description of the creation and fall of the angels. St Thomas taught that God granted the angels a moment of free-will to choose service to God. A third chose not to and followed Satan. St Thomas said their decision cannot be changed due to the character of angels. Human beings can change their mind while living in this life, but angels after the moment of free will, cannot.

Another point of discussion is that about Saint Stephen. Some Catholic sectors would argue that he is more accepted as the first saint, rather than Dismas. Just saying.

@@ironymatt This is the first time that I have heard his name also. I was thinking maybe you have something hear. So I looked it up and there were jesters during the time of Jesus but it seems that this name wasn't used until 1500 years later. Who knows I did 5 -- 10 minutes of research. If you find a connection let me know.

@@andyZ3500s lol, after doubling the commitment to research made by yourself, I too found no real link. The etymology seems to be from Latin into old French and then middle English, with the earliest use in English occurring around 1250-1300 AD. The Latin word gesta meant deeds or exploits and was a past participle of the Latin gerere, meaning to perform, carry on. I'd like to think there may yet be a relationship between the name and the word, but if so obscure or indirect. Looks like a job tailor made for Scheel!

Sorry if I am late to this discussion, but what makes Dismas a "Saint"? I always thought that saints were people who did heroic acts in defense of Christianity. Exactly what did Dismas do to become a saint? Ask for forgiveness for his sins? I always thought that he was the first human who was assured of a place in heaven (based on "today you will be with me in Paradise" statement by Jesus). But a "Saint"? I need to be educated on that. Thanks for these informative discussions.

Any person in Heaven is a Saint. That’s what Saint means. So if Dismas IS in Heaven as Jesus promised, he IS a Saint by definition.

They weren’t in Heaven yet. All the Patriarchs like that were still waiting for Christ to free them from their waiting area near hell. That’s why Christ descended into Hell after His Ressurection. So maybe you can’t be a Saint until you are in Heaven. See Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich visions of Hell on Utube. It’s where I learned this.
