The ending portrays the example that you shouldn't make your crush like you back, regardless of how you think would "win" his/her affection. Buck was pretty much focused on the idea that Maddie wanted a hero, so he tried too hard to become one. He obviously didn't plan that far ahead since being in a relationship is a big responsibility and can't be treated like an accessory.

People complain about the ending but I liked it, i don't think we were ment to sympathise with him rather it meant that if you go after love for the wrong reasons it won't end in happiness

True, but the problem for me isn't that it is an unhappy ending. It is that when he helps people while being this masked superhero just to get a girl because of superficial reasons, everything goes to hell. (act bad = unhappy) Then when he takes of the mask and his superpower, he sacrifices himself to save a little girl like a real hero! In return, he gets exactly what he wanted. (act good = happy). So we have clearly established a universe that rewards good and punishes bad. But then at the very ending we see him peacefully sitting there with a smile on his face, and then we pan over to the woman complaining in slow-motion, and she looks miserable (in an ugly evil way like a villain). They both get punished for being superficial in the end. Fine! They both get rewarded at the end for having a character change. Fine! But why such a miserable ending for her and not him? Is he supposed to be so much more relatable? This ending would have been fine if we earlier established a funny morally indifferent story and universe, but we didn't. So the ending just feels unfair.

This was very cool. THIS POST TITLED: Be careful what you wish for _or_ Don't sneak into the lab in the basement. However, just because I like to overthink the hell out of things, I think this cute little short really represents the true state of most of us, were we to suddenly get super-powers of one sort or another. I seriously doubt it would go down like the modern superhero movies depict, although the 'Man of Steel' did address that to some extent. But think about it. You get superstrength. How many buildings, cars, homes, even people do you destroy before you get it under control. Then, once you have it under control, and someone pushes all your buttons, and now you're on trial for murder. Sure, break out, and there's no way that could backfire. Superspeed. First, your shoes and clothes vaporize or shred, then your BARE FEET are undergoing fusion levels of friction. Invulnerability. Yeah, that could be cool, but even that could cause serious issues. Read a comic one time, dude gets hurt, goes to the hospital to get checked, and they find him with an infection, too. But before they gave him the antibiotics, he overheard two researchers talking about the super-invulnerability serum they just finished, in the lab downstairs. Dude sneaks down to the lab, injects himself, and goes back upstairs, to find his doctor with a hypo of antibiotics. With a needle that no longer will penetrate his skin. Seems the bacteria go invulnerable to his immune system, too. The last panel was pretty gross. Probably the same with most super powers, unless you are born to them and your parents know how to teach you in not only the use of them, but the non-use of them, trouble will ensue.

I was literally just thinking about this short the other day and it just popped up in my recommended, an animator my dad was mates with sent him this so he showed it to me years ago. I remember being so impressed with the pacing and funny bits but its such a shame stuff like that doesn't track. The nostalgia is what makes me watch it but I never realised how incredibly unlikeable the main character is. Kind of a disappointment really..
