As an owner of the current Gen 36 mm Explorer; it’s perfect in every situation. 19 mm straps are uncommon but easy enough to source and can really change up the look of the watch. All that said if I was this chap I’d get a blue dial Omega Rail Master and a handful of straps and pocket the difference.

Enjoyed your analysis and comparison. I have an Explorer 40 and several field watches, including Hamilton, Seiko 5 and Omega Railmaster. Personal taste absolutely but I find the Explorer’s attributes of the deep black dial, white gold bordered indices, the sublime bracelet and yes, THAT crown on the dial makes it feel very special wearing it. I don’t find it boring at all. It is built SO well. It’ll be my one and only Rolex. Again, personal taste

Hi Ash, As a one and only watch I would struggle to suggest the CWC. The G22 is a military field watch with 50m (!) water resistance. It might be a good tool watch for outdoor activities. But it lacks any other abilities. Like swimming for example. On the other hand an Explorer, with its 100m water resistance, makes for a good companion for nearly any occasion. In the office, on holiday and even on a wedding. There might be other one and only options as well. Omega has to offer the Aqua Terra or the Globemaster for example. And even the Cartier Santos (depends on the model) is a more qualified watch for a one watch collection. Don’t get me wrong - I like the CWC G22 for what it is. But as my only watch for the next centuries to come I would definitely pick another one. Best wishes, Claus

I write as an ex-owner of both Rolex and CWC. Rolex: If I were in 1957 and sought a professional watch for a professional job I could find none better. 2025: Average watch with an extortionate price. Only suckers need apply (if it were not for the resale value. There is a new sucker born every minute!) CWC: 1971 - great buy. 2025. Generic Swiss movement with a Hong Kong body. Sells to Walts who have never tried on a Seiko or a Citizen. Bought and sold on, as soon as.

Hello, Ash and good evening. Thank you for yet another thoughtful and well put together video. I have owned a 36mm Explorer in the past, and I currently own a CWC CS Sapphire. Neither, for me at least, could be the watch to see me to the end of my days. Explorer - bought to commemorate a significant birthday, worn daily for a month or so, then only occasionally on special occasions, then locked in a safe, then sold. No, not because it was plain or boring, but because I loved its looks and style so much that I had spent my maximum budget to buy it and did not have sufficient funds to maintain, service or repair it. My lifestyle is very active with cycling, sailing, skiing, hiking and camping all done regularly, and I also work in an engineering workshop with heavy tools and machinery. The watch, for sure, could cope with most of that, but what if I chipped the crystal, or broke a bracelet? My bank account could not cope. Thankfully, I was able to sell the watch with next to no net losses. My CS Sapphire is now my “tool” watch. It gets worn camping, sailing, hiking etc, and it has already got several knocks at work. I can’t snap a bracelet, because it doesn’t have one, and a cracked crystal would barely be in triple figures to replace. Hell, a whole replacement watch would be less than a basic service on my Explorer. Unfortunately, the fixed strap bars mean, as you said yourself, it is hard to pull off with a suit on its NATO or single-pass straps. I do need to do this occasionally. No, for me, a Grand Seiko 9f has been my “exit” watch - SBGN027. Better quartz accuracy than even the CS Sapphire, but just as robust. Just as smart/casual/versatile as the Explorer, but under half the price to buy new and even less to service. One watch, done and dusted (but with a few others in the watch box /drawers just to satisfy my demons…) Thanks for the good work and keep well :-)

I agree Ash, the Explorer lacks that something special. It is a tool watch which is well built but comes at a price, so for me it would be the CWC. Having said that, I purchased a G10 GMT quartz from MWC, with comparable heritage and at a much cheaper price. If the Explorer design is more preferable, then there are manufacturers who produce similar designs to the Rolex at a much cheaper price, such as Zeno or Smiths (the company name was bought, but the designs of the originals are still produced). Don’t forget that Christopher Ward produce some field watches which can be used as daily wearers, or even for those special moments.

Hi Ash. I got tied of crazy expensive luxury watches . I felt brain washed by the industry to be honest. So I'm with a CWC GS Navigator. It's basically the watch your viewer was asking about (but mine is with a date) - it's like the G10 but with 200m water resist, sapphire glass, 10 year battery, and date....I love the vintage hesalite of the G10 but this GS is a great daily...I may get an omega or iwc or rolex again some day, but for now, CWC is just no nonsense, real tool, really sturdy... I love this company In terms of the Explorer- without a doubt a great watch. I found the 36mm one very small on my wrist and a little too shiny though. I'd rather go for an older IWC mark XV or XVIII, although they are larger. Other options include the Omega Railmaster - again 40mm, so a little large The only downsides to the CWC are: - fixed lugs, so you're stuck with nato or single pass straps - very industrial sharp case - definitely function first and not a hint of luxury - I'm not sure if a watch for life would be better if it had that little bit of timeless magic and heritage - think Explorer, omega Speedmaster, IWC Mark watches etc... the CWC is a tool only i would say, and doesn't feel very special. Great watches, but it's like driving a Ford Focus when you really wanted a Lotus or something vintage.. It does the job, but nothing more.... for me anyway Final point - I'm pretty unlikely to buy a Rolex when i know that for half the money i can get something great from Omega, IWC and other brands.. May be worth looking at preowned watches from the early 2000s

Having dissolved my mil watch sub-collection, I have retained my CWC diver and the mechanical W10 that I was issued with 40 years ago. Out of all the wrist-wear I sport, it's those two that garner the most appreciation. I might as well still be in uniform! G10 for men... and for winners!

Those are two very different watches to choose between. I would split the difference and consider a Murph on a bracelet, or at a similar price point, a Zodiac Olympos Field. Both have a full set of Arabic numerals as per the CWC, while the Zodiac has British military heritage and is surprisingly versatile across a range of straps.

Great question from your viewer, and like his thought process. My thoughts, “are you buying the watch for others to admire, or choosing a watch that speaks to you, and for it to bring you pleasure. “ I went through the same process a couple of months ago, many people would not like my choice, “I will leave that with them”. However the watch I purchased (it resonates with me in so many ways) everytime I look at my watch it brings me joy. My watch, would be classed as not suitable to wear with a suit by so many people, that’s their opinion, not mine. I hope my thoughts are useful, to your viewer . Months on from my purchase, I’m very happy with it ..

The Explorer does both - simple easy to read field watch, but it shines nicely with it's white gold batons and polished surface, not to mention the Rolex lifetime quality. You can't wear a suit with the matt, military looking CWC , but at least you'll have money left over to be able to afford one!

I do not own a CWC (yet) but I do have the Explorer 36. I love the Explorers understated and functional design that should work in the majority of situations that we are likely to find ourselves. I must state though that since I got mine I have questioned myself if I really need some of my other watches as the Explorer has had the most wrist time of any other of my watches by some margin. I really do like the CWC though for its honesty being at a reasonable price and with the Sellita movement it should be easier to get serviced quickly at a reasonable cost.

I have both the 36 models, they don’t disappoint. Just works with everything and doesn’t stand out. I can also recommend the 38mm Omega Aqua Terra, but i my opinion the Explorer works a bit better with my life. Don’t go CWC, if you do just go quartz. If you want mechanical and smaller also check out the Hamilton Khaki Pilot (36mm). Watches don’t create any respect, just a tool, actions and behavior creates respect.
@alecb.769622 сағат бұрын
If the questioner wanted to consider only one watch (without swallowing the Rolex marketing strategy), he might consider the Sinn 556 RS. Plenty of charisma and can be dressed up for a suit or survive hiking. Plus 200 m water resistance. Not entirely convinced by the 'only one watch' approach, even for a minimalist. Watches are really non-essential items for *most* of us (allowing for work where a watch is a necessity, such as the military). But for most of us they can be seen as social 'tools'. You wouldn't use a steak knife to saw wood. Nor would one take a wood saw to a fine restaurant. Having the appropriate tool for different life situations doesn't mean having a collection with each tool in six varieties, so a minimalist approach is still possible. So if you have a watch at all, I think even with a minimalist approach there's a lot to be said for having two. Personally I think a Cabot GS (quartz) as a beater (on a NATO and 200 m water resistance) and a Nomos (Ludwig?) as a dress watch would 'fly nicely under the radar', for around a third of the price of the Explorer.
@andywebb664017 сағат бұрын
There's always the option of the Forstner klip stainless steel strap for the fixed lug issue. I think the CWC would work well in a more formal environment then.

Hi Chaps, it's something very attractive on buying cheap things that will last. Still, I must say, the feeling of owning a luxury thing, it's really pleasant. I think, one must know if s/he wants to buy watches for watches itself or it there's something more to it, and if does, what is the greater value for the buyer. What will make you happy. I hope, it makes sense.

Im surprised no-one ever talks about the cost of ownership when discussing Rolex & mechanical movements. Rolex service charges are also excessive & you could be without your watch for months. Plus, add in insurance of the watch. Take a look at Vertex M100A. Its based on the original Dirty Dozen Vertex from WW2, so plenty of verified history. Price wise, it sits between the CWC & Rolex. They have a shop in London too.

I don’t know. It depends on how he dresses. If he wears a jacket and tie, I don’t think a g10 style watch on a nato or perlon strap really works. I have such a watch by MWC, and I love it, but I wouldn’t wear it with a suit. If he dresses casually most of the time, then go for the CWC. That’s why most of us have more than one watch, to cover different bases. But one watch I wouldn’t buy even if I could afford it is a Rolex. It is an over-hyped, overpriced status symbol. I appreciate the heritage, but no, no way.

Happy new year Ash - here’s my thoughts. Rolex are like the BMW 3 Series in the company car park. Good quality undoubtedly, well marketed and recognisable by everyone as a mark of a certain level of success so aspirational - an easy but lazy choice. However no serious watch nerd would buy one. There’s loads of great watches out there at all price points and if you do your research you’ll be making an informed choice rather than following the heard, and when you meet someone who knows their stuff they’ll recognise that.

Get a service-issued vintage quartz CWC. Not too expensive & properly authentic.
@johnsinclair267218 сағат бұрын
They are two different styles, and therefore uses. The CWC is a genuine “field watch”. Based upon the design principles that form follows function. Today’s so called “Explorer” - which bears no semblance to the Rolex which actually reached the peak of Everest, is today a glitzy casual dress watch. It breaches the recognised design principle, by placing form over function. The Explorer lost its soul when the new Explorer was introduced in the late 1980’s. It was more “shiny” and became more vulgar “form over function”. Tudor have now filled the void which Rolex vacated when Rolex pursued the high end fashion route.

As a chap who aspired (perhaps more accurately coveted) a Rolex in my early years of military and federal service, I have now reached a point where a luxury watch is well within my means and yet…I don’t own one. That is not to say that I don’t have an embarrassingly full watch box. Instead, I have wandered down the track of affordable vintage & pre-owned watches. If I totalled all of my watches in value, they would not equal a Rolex Explorer. But, these watches are fun and the hunt has as much (sometimes far more) value to me than the watch itself. So, my own advice to our anonymous colleague would be to wait on the Rolex, buy a CWC but enjoy the hunt for that future “one and done” wristwatch. Best wishes to all on the chap quest for a healthy and happy 2025! JR old warrior, even older novelist

Now that we’ve established that the Explorer is a wonderful watch but highly overpriced, why don’t we just suggest that this guy buy a CWC AND a not too expensive dress watch for formal occasions. Something elegant and reliable like a vintage Omega or Tissot, they come in spades. Or a new Seiko or Orient if he can live with that… I know that the guy asked for a one watch collection. But a dress watch would outweigh the few things that the CWC isn’t that good for - and together the two watches will cost a fraction of the price for an Explorer. So I think he’ll have to aks himself: Is it really that important to own only one watch…?
@Valera_Scotland18 сағат бұрын
G22 vs GS. The GS is the same dial as the G10, unless you go with the date version. It does however have sapphire glass, not acrylic...Your photo shows the automatic G22 which is different from the GS . . It has very green painted numerals and is automatic. I prefer the GS which is 10 year lithium battery quartz and has the flat more white numerals ....or indeed just the G10 classic.. Also the GS is basically the same 36.5mm as the G10, only 0.5mm thicker case. Wears just like the G10

I think you need to live with both to really decide which one is your GADA or one-and-done watch. Opinions (respectfully) and specs on paper may not necessarily be THE deciding factor. If you can afford the Explorer, then you could probably also spring for the CWC as well. Wear them both, over time decide which one actually speaks to you, then sell the one that doesn't. Then you'll know for sure, without any doubts.

Sorry to double post but the G22 has the automatic movement but only 5 ATM of water resistance. The GS has 20 ATM water resistance, but a Swiss quartz movement. If he wants a true GADA watch that does everything he wants it to do he has to go with the quartz. I still think there are far better watches in between these two extremes and I think he ought to look at CW as I said before.

Fan of your content, but I fear your advice was a bit misguided. I realize that you got bored with the Explorer, but the CWC is even more boring due to the lack of any and all finishing. Granted, the CWC is only $500, but it wears and looks like a $500 watch. And the company producing them now resurrected the brand, meaning that it's not the same CWC from the dirty dozen days. Also, the CWC is kind of a throw-away watch, because who is going to pay hundreds to have it serviced? A vintage CWC, sure. But this new one is made mostly of Chinese parts and sold by a brand that is profiting off of purchased (not stolen) valor. The Explorer, on the contrary, is an exceptionally well made watch that would fit just about any environment, as you recognized. It's clearly the better option. Besides, he could always by the CWC later and use it as his beater. Sorry, once you get into watches the idea of a one watch collection is a fantasy. Nevertheless, disagreements about watches is part of what makes this community fun. I hope you took no disrespect from my criticism, as none was intended. As I said, I appreciate your content. Thank you for it.

I owned a Exp1 39mil for five years, but like you Ash found it a boring watch compared to many others I own, so I sold it. The CWC has never been on my radar as it isn’t my style of watch, so it wouldn’t be my choice. Comparing a £500 watch to a £6k watch is a bit silly IMO, apples to oranges as it were. So very much a case of buying which one you like, get the CWC, wear it and see how you go, you will probably be able to get back most of your £500 if you decide it’s not for you long term.

The CWC is a real military watch whereas the Rolex might be well built, but it is vastly over priced and over rated for field work, whereas the CWC is designed for just the purpose.
@whereRbearsTeeth21 сағат бұрын
This is an utterly ridiculous comparison of two watches on totally different levels. There is nothing wrong with the CWC if that is what you can afford. But comparing it to an Explorer as a one and done all around lifetime piece is absurd. If you can afford it, get the Rolex Explorer.
@nate218876418 сағат бұрын
I disagree (respectfully) these watches are, ostensibly, for the same person. An explorer. Unless Rolex is acknowledging that their pieces are now designed to be flex pieces then there is no reason these can’t be compared as tools. The Rolex is more durable, but more expensive to keep up. The CWC is cheaper but you won’t feel the need to baby it. The Rolex is automatic and the GS is quartz, both have their benefits. From a purely functional standpoint these are competitors. Of course there is an emotional element but the question of their design and purpose is an absolutely fair one.

@ That’s like saying a Ferrari and a bicycle are comparable because they are both used for transportation. Get real
@nate218876416 сағат бұрын
@@whereRbearsTeeth that’s not really the point I’m trying to make. I’d say my argument is more akin to a Ferrari and a Miata because both are sports cars. The shopper is presumably someone looking to have a performance oriented driving experience. Both of those cars do that but on totally different levels. There are positives and negatives to both of those cars. Think about it this way, a Tag glass box can be picked up for $6500 where a speedy sapphire is $8K. I’d argue that you have a similar shopper for both watches when it comes strictly to the utility of the watch (chronograph). I’d say the speedy has the edge in fit and finish and heritage, but the glass box has a date window and column wheel based movement. While they serve the same function, they have various attributes that might make them better for one shopper over another.

I tend to agree with you, Nate. I suppose it depends on the subjective determination of the buyer, but in this particular case it seems that the buyer is conflicted about which heritage piece to buy, in which case the better value seems to lie with the CWC. For me and a lot of watch enthusiasts, you wear the history, the heritage and the story; the actual functionality of the watch is, perhaps, a close second. In the modern era, it is not difficult to find an affordable yet highly functional watch. The objective for the watch enthusiast is to wear something which brings him a special sort of joy when he looks down at his wrist or simply knows he’s wearing something special. In the case of Rolex, so much of that ‘special’ quality is manufactured by marketing yet relatively lacking in substance. As for the average watch enthusiast, it is also important to consider the costs of maintenance and repairs, and perhaps just as importantly (if not more so) just how devastating a loss it would be to lose or damage the watch beyond repair. In such a case where the watch wearer sacrifices too much in the way of peace of mind, the value proposition of owning the watch is also diminished.

I own a CWC GS Sapphire, (and a couple of other CWCs) And a Rolex (for 40 years). I wear the CWC (and change the strap to black for formal dressing up). I don't wear the Rolex. Its a poor time keeper, costs a fortune to maintain and anyway, Rolex's are not really a gentleman's watch.

I agree. The Explorer looks kind of boring. And for the price of the CWC G22, you can buy one, wear it and see how it makes you feel. Without breaking the bank and possible suffer buyers remorse.

I like the look of the CWC but I think it’s far too casual to be a man’s only watch. It seems to me that it would be limited to casual outfits. That said, I would never buy a Rolex (even if I could afford one). I absolutely hate the elitist marketing strategy they have. There are many other brands I would look at if I wanted to spend thousands of dollars/pounds/euros on a watch.

Good morning Ash. Quite a question, your analysis is spot on. I haven't owned either although I'm well aware of them. The Explorer feels like too much money for a tool watch and I wouldn't use one as such. With a two tone version being available it undermines the intent of the model for me. After eschewing the rugged nature of the Explorer, to release one with gold seems clumsy and done just to please certain customers. So few Rolex owners experiment with different straps which is an opportunity missed, but the lugs look too chunky to me when they're off the bracelet. The CWC would feel too small on my wrist and the fixed bars would restrict the situations in which wearing one would feel suitable. However it's a magnificent watch and rightly the choice of the military. Were I in the same boat I'd look at the Tudor Ranger and the Omega Railmaster then pick up a variety of NATO and leather straps as well as a spring bar tool & loupe. Both very well made watches, in between the price of the watches under question here and both at a size that I'm comfortable with. Kind regards, Rob

It's hardly 'extreme minimalism' lol You (as is usual) have not mentioned the tactility of the Explorer. I have never handled a CWC but know the daily on/off will be a very much superior on the Explorer. The Explorer 40 is 38.5mm 😉 has double the power reserve, and is serviceable for life.

F1 was silly, and I simply am unaware of their ambassadors (I know Federer is one only because of KZbin). Other brands marketing is far more prevalent IMO. How much does Clooney get lol? It's just ADVERTISING FFS.
