Hello sir, as a mid 50ier I went somehow the same route. When I was 30 I gravitated around the Breitling Navitimer. After a couple of years I found it to large heavy and bling bling. When I was 40 I gravitated around Rolex, I had about the same collection as you have now. I sold most of them. The regrets, yes, my explorer 1 and a 2 tone datejust on jubilé bracelet. Perhaps a strange decision but a refreshing one as I started to appreciate the vintage pieces I had in my collection from my father and grandfather. Gold JLC on a nice leather strap, A nice 18ctgold/SS Omega Constellation with "Pie Pan" dial. A vintage Tissot rectangular watch from the late 1930ies, in great condition, .... In our sartorial quest we all thrive to have the best.... To be honest when you go to a formal reception and when the conversation shifts to the chap wearing a 39mm Oyster and he explains you he have been waiting for 2.5 years to get one. Most are wearing probably a Rolex, genuine or fake. As gentlemen we are limited in the choice of our accoutrements compared to women. Do we have to standardise to one brand as a watch choice? A discrete well proportioned watch makes the difference. I never had so many compliments wearing my older Omega Constellation. Regarding the "Dolce Vita", from the pictures I have seen, the watch is fairly large and thick compared to the original siblings. The JLC Reverso is a classic, formal, discrete but just enough to show some flair. As are some other models from the brand.

My watch journey has been similar to yours, Ash. I always liked watches, but stayed in the affordable segment for decades. During the pandemic, that all changed with the purchase of a Tudor BB58, my first luxury watch. Then a Rolex Datejust, followed by a Rolex Submariner (green bezel), then a Rolex Explorer 124270 and a recently, a Rolex OP36 green dial. All from the same Rolex AD. My tastes have changed and I prefer the 36mm size now. It is a lifelong fun hobby, but it also gets rather expensive once you move up to the luxury segment. I love wearing my Rolexes, for all the same reasons you do. The Longines is a lovely dress watch. Cheers!

Im happy to see that you are expanding your collection to dress watches. For the Cartier on the medium size I’ll make an exception for the quartz. But the classic is the JLC recerai classico (that traditionally was a sport watch for play polo) is the super classic.

Imo the Tank medium is too small even on my 6.4” wrist. A large and XL fit well. The XL is auto and has a date. Maybe slightly less dress than the 2 hand no date L. L size gets manual mechanical movement in gold

I would kindly recommend the Cartier Santos Dumont. It is available not only in precious metal but as a mechanical movement. From a heritage perspective, it doesn’t get much better than wearing a watch named after the prolific aviator who wore the first men’s wrist watch delivered by Cartier himself as a tool for aviation.

Ash, another wonderful video. My biggest fear of seriously entering the luxury watch arena is my lifelong history of continually losing pens, watches, and anything not 'attached at the hip' so to speak. As a bit of a test, I recently purchased a very nice pre-owned Longines to see if I could 'man up' and not lose it....

The Longines DolceVita Men's Black Leather Strap Watch was my first choice for a dress watch. However on my wrist it sat in the middle of a circle of untanned, Scottish blue-white skin, left from my 39mm circular daily watches, so I decided against it and went for an Oris 40mm leather strap dress watch instead which always attracts compliments when I wear it.

Hi Ash, greetings from Germany! First and foremost sorry for my bad english. In my opinion the Reverso would suite you and your overall style perfectly! The Longines looks a bit too much like a business/jewelery piece and not someting you would wear on an elegant and formal diner. For me your DJ is your perfect "business dress watch" and your "real dresswatch" should be as elegant and as gentlemen like as possible. For me only the JLC and the Cartier ticks this box. But I don't like Quarz movements as well so I would try to go for the Reverso. Maybe you could sell one of your GMTs to get the deal done...

Ash, going by everything you’ve talked about in this video I think if you bought the Longines you would still feel like something is missing. Don’t get me wrong they are great watches for the price point but you will end up comparing them to your Rolex’s. I am exactly where you are now, I have no idea which direction to go in now. Personally I feel you would be happier if you went with a pre-owned Reverso.

I'm sorry but Rolex doesn't sell the best watches in the industry by far,. Sure people who don't know anything about watches think that Rolex are the best. Jlc as I'm sure you know are the watchmaker watch. Meaning that for many many years they made the movements for nearly all the Swiss companies, that isn't by accident,. Remember although Rolex are a very capable timepiece, they are overhyped and the treatment by the brand is terrible
@sholemepstein

@@ChrisJones-ki2bx I could not agree more. In addition it was Zenith that made the first automatic movement for the Rolex Daytona, which is the reason I bought the Zenith Sports Chrono instead of the Daytona. Actually that is just one of the reasons. I love the idea of timing in 10th of seconds. Not to mention no waiting, walk into the Dealer and walk out with the watch, it's cheaper and not for nothin but the Zenith is a better watch.
@madeincyprus

@@ChrisJones-ki2bx I agree, they are nowhere near the best in the industry. My love for them has nothing to do with the hype, mine started 20 years ago when I inherited my grandfathers day date from the 70’s. It still runs perfectly to this day. The reason I buy Rolex is because I’m fortunate enough to get them at retail due to a very good relationship with my AD, I think the retail prices are fair but totally agree that the grey market prices are ridiculous. If money was no object I would love to own a Patek, AP or Vacheron, unfortunately this will never be a possibility for me 🤷🏻‍♂️. I am after a JLC next as I agree they are incredible!

Fascinating journey, the white gold Roley was and is on my list. Just a little nuance here- and it's interesting to see how many comments reference the Reverso, my dress watch choice- it makes a big difference having the dress watch on a bracelet. I was lucky to find a Reverso duoface on its beads-of-rice-style bracelet and it feels considerably more special than on the strap (which I also have). Of course that's stainless, in gold it might be a bit much! Incredible watches.

Last December I bought 2 dress watches - Cartier Tank Must large & Lorier Zephyr. I don’t mind the Cartier being quartz as it’s super slim, there is no second hand & the movement is in house. Another thing is that you can play with swapping the strap to dress it up or make it more casual - options from companies like Delugs. The Lorier has a tonneau case shape, guilloché dial & is automatic: much cheaper than the Tank & is different

Dear Ash, I hear you. My Rolex journey has taken me 5 years and 4 watch purchases down my local AD when I finally was fortunate to get the SS white Daytona. In all truthfulness you won’t ever use the chrono on the Daytona for anything precise, I don’t even bother unscrewing the wind to use it. But the aesthetics of the watch on the wrist is just a beauty whenever I glance for the time. I also have the Pepsi like you, which I enjoy and trust me, if you get the chance to acquire a Daytona don’t let it pass by. In my personal taste and opinion, I enjoy the Rolex sports watches in stainless steel versions rather than a mix of gold/steel but to each his preference. As for dress watches you seek, they will be more attainable quantity and financially wise, a Daytona is indeed a rarity. I wish you well on the pursuit of your watch journey
@heikowallauer
@heikowallauer Жыл бұрын
Good day Ash, Thank you for the insight into your collection history. And of course, if the Daytona doesn't give you anything, it's only logical to refrain from buying it. I think most people, if they had the opportunity to buy a Daytona through an AD, would take it and then sell it on the grey market. But it's great that you're giving others the chance to buy! The Longines Dolce Vita is a very tasteful watch with a lot of presence on the wrist. It always looks slim in photos, but on your wrist it cuts a fine figure. And the price is of course very friendly for a watch that you might only wear on certain occasions. I also like the Oris Rectangular, which looks very stylish and classic with the Art Deco elements. Only the leather strap should be exchanged for a higher quality one. The other day I tried on a Patek Philippe Gondolo at a second-hand dealer for fun. These are sometimes very beautiful models and, compared to the "hot" Pateks, they are still relatively „moderately“ priced on the second-hand market. But still more than I would like to spend on a dress watch. It's a pity that Rolex no longer has anything on offer here. In the past, there were some rectangular models in the Cellini line, but if I see it correctly, there is currently only the Cellini Moonphase. I'm already curious to see where your watch journey will take you! Best regards!

Hello Ash, firstly I really enjoyed this little discussion about your journey thus far and your future with regards to watches. Considering that you are warming up to the idea of a square/rectangular dress watch, you may want to consider one of the many Cartier Tank or Santos variations indeed. Though I must say, Reversos are definitely a step up in my opinion when compared to the Cartier pieces. It may also interest you to consider the Oris Rectangular which is a competitor to the Longines Dolce Vita and has a really lovely design also. Either way, I highly doubt you would regret those pieces, which ever you may pick.

Frédérique Constant - Classics Carrée , Oris - Rectangular, Baume et Mercier - Hampton, Albert Villa - Petite Seconde or blow it all on a Audemars Piguet - Edward Piquet. Another great video! Cheers for sharing watch content :) I have also been bit by the same bug! Having both Seiko's and my trusty Rolex Explorer I, I have to say that each watch house impresses me in different ways. Rolex for similar reasons that you noted in your video, but Seiko for their ability to produce reliable, consistent, and prolific timepieces that are vertically 100% in-house and not just their movements as many Swiss brands are doing. Usually at a fraction of the price as well which is always a nice thing for me :) Just picked myself up a Grand Seiko recently and it is a whole other level of engineering, simple design, functionality, and craftsmanship that rivals any piece in my watch box currently. Can't wait to follow your watch journey as it continues to grow and evolve mate! Cheers :)

I also have my grandfather’s gold Trebex watch - which will be passed onto a younger family member soon.

Dress watches really are the under appreciated area of the watch world and there are some fantastic bargains out there, especially in the pre-owned market. As for some suggestions. Firstly, if you would like an automatic Cartier then the Tank Americaine may be worth considering. Secondly, if you would like a British watch it may be worth you looking at a Fears Archival or Brunswick. Both have that rectangular style you are after and are fanatically elegant. I believe Fears are even quite local to you with them having their headquarters and showroom in Bristol.

I have a Santos De Cartier with blue dial and bezel and is a beautiful watch and I love it (it probably gets 3 times more use than any of my other watches) but, for me, it's not a dress watch even with a alligator strap on it. If I was in the market for a dress watch then the Santos Dumont in large would be the one. If you are set on a mechanical watch then there is the Dumont in XL which has a manual movement and a Tank Must XL which is again mechanical. To be honest, the amount of times I need a formal watch now, I would go for the Longines, with the small seconds, and save my money

As an owner of 5 Rolexes, Speedy hesalite, and a JLC Reverso Duoface, one thing I learned is that manual wind isn't the easiest to fit into a frequent watch swap due to having to manually wind the watch every day or reset the time every time I wear it. I'm leaning towards Cartier Solarbeat specifically bc it's a dress watch that doesn't have to be reset or wound.

In fairness, manual wind can also be easier in this regard if people have a relatively small collection. If you wind _all of 'em_ every morning, then you're pretty much always good to go with switching watches. And this is without having to fiddle around with watch-winders. (And winders also quickly take up a lot of space in an average-sized safe...)

As a collector, the desire for “another” watch always returns soon or later, but purchasing a Longines or a B&M will only temporarily satisfy you, and not give you the same long term satisfaction of owning a Reverso, the quality isn’t the same. Having purchased a Reverso about 20 years ago, I still admire it today, and it stands in the top drawer, not relegated with my “other” watches….

I think you're on the right lines with a dress watch. Although the Longines is very nice I'd stretch to the Cartier Tank. The Tank is the original and I think you would enjoy having a Cartier in your collection.

JLC reverso is where you should go. You can afford it, especially selling some of the rolexes, as they mostly the same. Reverso is amazing convo striker. You flip it, and people act like caveman who just discovered fire... whattt the helll just hapeneddd??!?! Though, if you go with dolce vita, i cant say nothing, really nice elegant watch. Just to add, you should also consider jlc duoface, very versatile, basically two in one, yes starts from 11k, but you can afford by selling some your rolexes, because now you kind of have all eggs in one basket.

The Longines Dolce Vita is a really nice watch. I'd be tempted to go for that or a Cartier Tank or Santos. I agree with you on the Daytona. The champagne dial two-tone looks good compared to the others but I just don't like the Daytona. A lot of hype around Rolex and that is the most hyped watch of them all.

The Reverso is a special one for me. When we had a family gathering many years ago, my uncle would chuck me his Reverso and being a toddler, I would play with it quietly for an hour! They are timeless classics and I love the manual wind versions for some reason. The Longines looks a bit like it wants to be a Cartier and I learned a while ago that getting your second choice will very often be regretted, even if it is cheaper. Hell, you were about to drop £16k for a Roler you didn't really want! In this situation, maybe its good to follow your heart and not your head!

I have a suggestion for you which you could be very tempted by. You mentionned the Cartier Tank Must and how you'd prefer an automatic version. Well guess what there is an automatic version. Check out the Cartier Tank Must Extra-Large model (automatic). I thought it would be too big for my small-ish wrist but now I own that watch. It's actually my first proper dress watch. It wears very comfortably and I suggest you try it on before buying your next dress watch ;)

Pre quartz watch 'crisis' Longines had the name and the magic. They still do resonating on the wrist when wearing. Today, Longines are very much back in the game. My Longines VHP has a stated accuracy of +- 5 seconds a year. IMO Longines very much has the wrist magic.

I was always just a 2 watch man, until relatively quite recently like in my teens a Casio-Digital & a Swatch Watch, 20's & early 30's a G-Shock & Quarts Analogue (For example I had a Tag Heuer Professional 2000 38-39mm which i reserved for best) It was my late 30's that I went a bit watch mad and bug bitten, currently saving for a Rolex Explorer.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet Ash but my wildcard dress watch style recommendation would be the newly introduced Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm at £820 Chronograph wise can see the Omega Moonwatch being more your style than the Daytona

I think Longines gives the most value for your watch dollar (pound on your side of the the pond). Currently there are two in my collection with another on order. I have a rectangle stainless steel case on a black alligator strap. I went to the Longines web site to get the model name but it is no longer available. It is the same model worn by Humpty Bogart in Casablanca, which is the main reason I bought it. My dress watch is a gold Rolex Cellini, pillow case, on a black leather strap. One of the things I love about this watch is the simplicity of the face, not even a second hand. It has a mechanical movement (the only movement of its' kind in the collection). For me winding the watch provides an interaction that gives something akin to a sense of intimacy with the watch that no other movement offers.

I have two dress watches from the Swedish Company Waldor & Co including their Conceptual 37 range. Mine is the square Antibes version which looks good with either the stainless strap or black leather. They also have Cap Ferrat style in stainless and gold. Their simple design appeals to my eye, very thin, very elegant. Worth a check Ash? They are also quite reasonable in the $300 range. I did own a square gold Longine but it was lost forever having somehow fallen from my golf bag during a round of golf! Can you imagine!

Interesting journey! Totally understand the thoughts about the Tank Must. It's now £2770 and it just can't get myself to spend that much on a quartz watch. On the plus side the current large model has the same size and shape as the Tank Louis. But you would certainly be paying for the icon status. -There are also vintage JLC options, non Reverso ones. Maybe a vintage Tank Must, but the plain silver version with a manual would movement. A bit hard to come by. A shame most of those had vermeil cases.

Cartier tank watches come in automatic too, but the price goes up. I came close to picking up a Tank XL and also a Tank Amercaine in 18k , but my money went elsewhere (a good thing because one of the watches I bought, the Omega Speedmaster Tin Tin, I just sold for 5x what I paid for it). As for Longines, another model line to consider is the Evidenza. A little less Cartier wanna be looking and with it’s own history (Humphrey Bogart wore one in Casablanca).

Great video Ash. If I can share my experience and as a word of caution. I like you bought Rolex’s. I started with a DJ 36 then bought a DJ 41. Then last year I was lucky enough to buy a Submarine. All new from Watches of Switzerland my AD. I then decided to sell my DJ 36 to help finance my Sub. I offered it to WoS but they offered me well below market. I sold it on FB with a small profile. Anyway while in my local WoS to take an Omega in for a Service last weekend I asked about the possibility of a GMT. I was told I had been Blacklisted from buying a Rolex from any of their stores because I sold one of their watches privately rather than to them. I was speechless. I had owned the watch for over a year. I am currently going through an appeal process with them cheers Ellis Rees
