A good quality cashmere or wool-and-cashmere blend topcoat is the workhorse of my winter wardrobe when walking downtown to meet friends for coffee, picking up groceries, or shopping at the local boutiques and thrift shops. Top it off with a fur felt Fedora and you've got a stylish outfit that will almost instantly make you stand out from the crowd.

Great advice. As a man ages it becomes even more important to dress carefully and well. Peoples responses to and interactions with a well dressed, elderly gentleman are completely different than if that same man were in a poorly fitted, unkempt, uncoordinated outfit. Do not underestimate the "signal value" of good shoes rather than the omnipresent sneakers (trainers). I once walked into an exclusive store in San Francisco and was immediately served. I asked why the salesperson came to me rather than others already in the store. The answer "your shoes, Sir." The same for a carefully chosen necktie (so rarely worn these days) and accessories. Careful dress is a sign of respect to all around you. You have taken the time and effort to present yourself well for them.

Another excellent video. You are so right. All it takes is a nice piece of clothing and people treat you better. I've just turned 50 and have been a t-shirt and jeans guy all my adult life. Like your gentleman from Washington state I have been looking for advice and information and you covered a good amount of questions.

I agree completely with upgrading your clothing, ESPECIALLY with my experience in the Pacific Northwest. I lived in Boston, so SOME dress-up was to be expected in better restaurants, theater. I wore nice things, got better service. What I was comfortable wearing on nice occasions, dates. Some years past, my then girlfriend wanted me to experience her adopted home town of Seattle. Since she worked for an airline, we got good seats, and when I showed up in a suit and tie, polished shoes etc., I was offered an upgrade to First Class. SHOCK. Well...YES, of course, thank you very much! When we arrived, the vast and overwhelming majority of men's wear on display consisted of plaid shirts and worn jeans, puffy vests, with work boots. I was in nice tweed, highly polished shoes, pocket square, red carnation boutonniere, fedora with a rain cover to hand, and a caped oilskin outback coat in the suitcase. After all, it WAS Seattle with a festival named Bumbershoot... What was MOST surprising as we went about town was the attention I was getting from women, EVEN WHILE I WAS WITH MY GIRLFRIEND. To be blunt, I was getting hit on. SECOND SHOCK...many of the women were rather attractive. Looking at ME? Pike Place Market, restaurants, tours and so on was more of the same experience for me. That trip was indeed a unique and pleasurable experience, and led to others.

Oh, and an aside concerning ties...I have hand made a good half-dozen bow ties made up from worn but favorite ties. Easily done, and there's always enough material for a bow tie. I simply copied from an example to hand, and anyone with a sewing machine (and a bit of hand stitching) can do it. Be aware it will not be adjustable, so size them to your neck, and hope you do not gain much weight!

I enjoy your channel as, for the most part, you confirm the ideals of male style that I was brought up with. There may be one or two things I don't 100% agree with eg I don't own a Dinner Suit because I do own a made to measure 8 yard Kilt, a Prince Charlie and waistcoat and black Ghillie Brogues which covers any "Black Tie" event I am likely to attend 👍 I also own 3 knitted fisherman's hats, each one in the same colour as one of my Harrington jackets.

In terms of high-low dressing, I absolutely agree that you should invest more into your footwear, as well as staple wardrobe pieces. The way I dress up bargain or second-hand pieces of clothing, such as suits, sports coats, or pants is with nice shoes and higher quality accessories. The way I see it, pants, jackets, and shirts all wear out sooner or later. But it is far easier to keep and maintain nice shoes and accessories for years, possibly even decades. And those are the details of your outfit that people notice, that can take your look from good to great, and that have the potential to last a lifetime

I found this channel recently and like it a lot. The high low dressing is the thing I started to do a few months ago. Buying high quality clothing second hand and the money i save I invest in quality new clothing. Also told and explained my son that he needs to take care of his shoes. Thanks Ash !!!

Before finding your channel, I find that I already had all of your advice boxes checked. Shoes, ties, Rolex, overcoat, blazers, Allen Edmond shoes, Barbour Bedale waxed jacket etc. You just reaffirm that I innately know how to dress. Additionally, I was a special investigator with the FBI and routinely met with high level businessmen and federal officials and have even received complements regarding my $1000 suits which I acquired from my local thrift store for $20.00. Another excellent video, Ash, and I agree with you when it comes to investing in good quality shoes. I just bought a pair of pre-owned suede brogues from Abbot' s Shoes which I could never have afforded to buy new (£850) and you would never know that they weren't brand new. I assume you're already aware of them, but if not, check them out. Also literally bought a navy sports jacket yesterday 😉. Thanks again.

I'm sorry, Ash, but I couldn't help but giggle at you saying the UK has hot and balmy summers. Here in Colorado, weather goes from -10F (-23.3C) to 105F (40.5C). It's a bit of a joke for us Midwestern and Southern Americans that Brits can't handle heat. Not that it's weird or anything - we adapt to our surroundings. Californians will complain about how cold it is here during fall to me, when I feel it's lovely out. I absolutely suggest vintage for our friend here. Look at it like this: You have three hundred dollars to spend on an overcoat. You could buy a decent one at the local department store, or you could buy six(!) of them on eBay, all of which are higher quality than the one you bought at the mall. There are great arguments for vintage - it's highly environmentally sustainable, it's quite affordable, it removes any possible guilt from buying leathers and furs, and it gives a loved item a new chapter to its story. Vintage garments can have character! If money isn't an issue, then buy bespoke, but otherwise, vintage is the way to go. I'd recommend fedoras over trilbies, personally. Why? Trilbies may have an association with the incel internet culture, and while that shouldn't dissuade you from wearing a dress hat elegantly, fedoras are just father away from that stereotype (even though trilbies and fedoras are almost entirely referred to as the latter). Also, consider all the other types of dress hats: bowlers, homburgs, pork pies, boaters, Panamas, and even flat caps. Top hats are really only for morning dress or white tie - something I'm just foppish enough to own both of. Consider tuxedos black homburg or boater events. May I recommend Charles Tyrwhitt shirts? They feel like true quality shirts despite only costing thirty dollars on sale for three, and they fit a 6'3 slim gent like me, unlike most other dress shirts, which have an infuriating habit of either being too baggy or slim fit and too short. When it comes to shoes, a gent doesn't need all that many. Unless you're really into shoes for some reason or another, you pretty much only need a black pair of oxfords, dark brown derbies or monk straps, and a light brown or oxblood pair. Those three shoes can get you through most events you'll ever encounter. Also consider a pair of penny loafers. I find that leather quality isn't of the utmost importance here; the only thing that really matters is that the leather is real and not synthetic. Great video once again, Ash! Cheers!
@DressyCrooner
@DressyCrooner Жыл бұрын
I second the recommendation of Charles Tyrwhitt shirts. I bought four for £149 just recently and I am very pleased with them. As for shoes, inspired by Ash I have bought in the last couple of weeks three pairs of shoes from Ebay - a pair of black Loake semi-brogues, a pair of brown Crockett and Jones Winchester oxfords, and a pair of Russell and Bromley Burlington boots. Sadly the Crockett and Jones pair are so badly in need of resoling that they may not have worked out as the bargain I was hoping for. I also now possess a pair brown full brogue Southport derbies from Russell and Bromley and a pair of their black Boris oxfords. I'm intrigued by Thomas Bird's selection of Oxfords - their oxbloods in particular are gorgeous...and as we speak I have bought a pair of brown Barker Mirfield oxfords from Ebay at a knock-down price. I await their arrival with bated breath. I am officially shoe-mad.

If Hungry hubby lives west of the Cascade Mountains I strongly suggest Danite soles for the shoes or boots. Lots of rain. Coats I suggest you look at Schotts. Look for wool. Navy surplus wool pea coat would go well in Washington.

I will say that more often than ever ties had a very bad life especially considering that so many people don’t even bother to untie them. For me if we are not in rush to need a wardrobe out of a blue for a new job for instance, is nice spend in ties. I tried used one with more or less happy outcome but is not for me. I prefer spend once or twice per year £80/100 and have a tie for life and when I wear my drake or marinella I feel important. And it’s a invisible boost of confidence that I love.

Real silk pocket squares tend to cost a bundle, even on ebay. However there are plenty of offerings from Chinese sellers on there, made of polyester but with decent designs for very little money at all. If you pick the darker hues of reds, blues, and possibly yellows, they will be be indistinguishable from the real thing by all but the most practised eye. Its also worth looking at the ladies headscarf offerings on ebay, there are often silk designs for lower prices than mens silk that are not girlie at all, and make a top notch scarf tied bandanna style, or possibly even cut down to make a pocket square. Check out YT for video's on how to hand sew a rolled edge on silk squares.

Hello Ash, I’m looking at a pair of double monk shoes and a pair of jodhpur boots Should I go for the boot or shoe? I like wearing boot more than Shoes. The Advice on shoes is pretty good. Most people See what your feet is wearing and tell about themselves. Eye contact is a sign of good communications. Some people are shy so they look at the others shoes first to get more comfortable.
