If you've been on The Charismatic Voice long enough, you know that I love Disturbed's cover of "The Sound of Silence", and David Draiman's vocal artistry. As Disturbed is starting to tour later this year, I wanted to dig into more of their back-catalogue before listening to their new album. . . and this was on the top of your list!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Disturbed performing "Stupify" for the first time.

That's a big part of why we're here - to live that first experience vicariously through someone else. We get to watch her fall in love with these great songs like we did. Diving deeper into Disturbed is always a win. “Prayer” and “Remember”, from the Believe album, still give me goosebumps twenty years later, especially the latter. The final track, “Darkness” gave a soft insight into the entirely clean singing David was capable of, and in my mind, acted as the precursor to the “Sounds of Silence” cover they nailed over a decade later. Speaking of covers, I hope this means we’ll get a breakdown of “Land of Confusion” in the not too distant future. Maybe even a dual breakdown, given that the og was by Phil Collins/Genesis. Comparing the videos alone would be a “riot”, nudge nudge 😉😉…

I think if you managed to get him to " join you for tea", Elisabeth, you would find that David has had a very interesting, and difficult vocal journey story. He essentially had to relearn and teach himself to sing within his limits after incurring some vocal damage on tour. But he put in the hard work, dedicated himself to his craft, and became a better and healthier singer/vocalist for it. Thank you for always doing YOUR " homework", Elisabeth, and keeping an open mind, and appreciating the endless myriad of vocal talents, in all there wonderful varieties out there! As others have already commented the word he's elongating at 15:45, which you came back to several times later, is: 'Tefached' which means be afraid, so not exactly about insanity but rather perhaps the consequence of it. That also explains the next part of the song: 'don't deny me, don't be afraid' which for non Hebrew speakers is easy to miss the reference. Oh and by the way, the way he sang the 'Tefached' is indeed in a very traditional Hebrew style which is commonly used in religious hymns and other traditional ancient songs. So you were indeed correct that he brought some of his Jewish heritage into the song without actually knowing it.

“Te Fa Ched” is Hebrew future tense of “to be afraid”. Draiman uses this veiled meaning to contrast with “don’t be afraid” in the next stanza, ostensibly as a warning, to let the listener know that his grasp on sanity is slipping away, and allude to his future potential for violence, within the context of the song. Brilliant lyrical imagery.

So many great songs, “Just Stop” is in my top five. This is the meaning behind it: “About a situation where your other half is always trying to come up with reasons to argue with you and you are constantly apologizing, and constantly asking for forgiveness, over and over again, and the frustration that comes with it. The song is asking “that person” to just stop.”

David and Disturbed was my first real intro into the world of rock/metal music. I will forever love all of their music. On a side note you need to also do a Sleep Token reaction. "The Summoning" by them shows such a vocal range of this new generation of music. You see the inspirations they've taken from all of the older bands.

When I first heard Disturbed, I liked it. I didn't appreciate it for what it was, though. The "screaming' was all I really heard at first, but the more I listened, the more I realized there was a lot of nuance in his voice. He actually "sang," and moved between clean and distortion; and his enunciation is very strong and clear. The newer "Sound of Silence," "Hold on to Memories" and others really bring out his talent and range.

The word he is saying in the bridge is “Tefached” which in Hebrew means “you will fear” or “you will be afraid” Thanks for bringing such a musical education into metal. One of the big appeals of this song to many Disturbed fans is the balance of the smooth and the harsh sections of the song - his ability to make both sides sound beautiful is what many of us love about his voice. And I think I've said it before, but for something really surreal after listening to Disturbed, look up Ben Draiman's cover of Stricken. It's David's brother, doing a cover of one of Disturbed's songs, and it's amazing how different it is from the original.

God I loved this song as a young kid as this album (along with Hybrid Theory) is what developed my love for Rock. Draiman has such power and "that demon" you referred to is exactly what he can do. I remember reading this song is about breaking off an engagement due to the stress the woman was putting on the man to get married and the man wanting to have sex before marriage. They couldn't get over the difference and lost their eventual marriage.

I am going to be 60 years old and listening to this song and singing along with it, makes me feel calmer, it pops in my head during times of anxiety due to the ignorance of others and it's funny how music can either ramp you up or calm you down. I see how you seemed to feel more anxiety during this and it scared you and for me it's different. The aggression, sadness, anger, angst, hysteria and almost madness of this song with David's voice along with the amazing music helps me take control of the stress and anxiety I have inside at times. After all these years it still pops in my head and I will sing the entire song in my head along with the screams and it calms me down and I feel less stressed. Music saves, even music that sounds scary to others :) I love your vocal analysis channel. :)

I noticed the same thing. Each time the vocals made her jump was when I would feel a sudden release of tension from my back and chest. It's funny how music affects all of us differently. I'm 44 and discovered metal back around 1990. I fell in love with Metallica's "Master of Puppets" album. Then I discovered Nine Inch Nails "Broken" EP and fell in love with Industrial music, too. I've been entranced with both genres, and their many crossovers and variants, ever since. I'm one of the people who can say with all honesty that metal saved my life.

I quite enjoy and find it interesting how Elizabeth is critiquing, experiencing and discovering this song for the first time. I remember when I first heard this song...I was instantly hooked (boy I was young then...lol). This, and Down With the Sickness, was my introduction to Disturbed. Her comments regarding a sense of insanity, are spot on. It's a conflict, an inner conflict, often is the most detrimental, from outside pressures. I must admit, my favorite part of the song is the break section whereby there's clearly a very different and exotic sound (15:23). Hebrew, connecting us to David's roots. I love Elizabeth's expression when she first hears this part...I think in her head she's thinking whoa...whats going on here (but very impressed)? Who would have thought this would work....but it's executed in such a way...that it's flawless and fits perfectly within a modern hard rock style. The song writing and vocal delivery are amazing in this song! This was released I think in 2000, so you can imagine what grounds were broken at that time with this sound! I own many albums from Disturbed but this album still is by far one of their best hand down. Still to do this day, a big fan. 😎🤘

I´m so happy, you did another Disturbed song. The whole Band is sooo underated, unknown, unlistened and under the radar of so many people. Other cool songs, that have depth to it and are nearly never suggested are "Deify" and "Overburdened". More of slower pace, but it pierces all through my body... don´t know why, but it must be the blend of sounds and vocals or the meaning of them, can´t figure it out. Maybe one day you could make an analysis and make some clouds disappear around my head. My favorite Bands in Metal are Jinjer, Queensryche, Disturbed and.... Black Sabbath, which besides one of my favorite songs "Heaven and Hell" and Children of the Sea, still has to be done at TCV. There are many opinions of "who invented Metal", but one of the tops is: Black Sabbath. And considered as "the birth-song" is Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath of their album Black Sabbath (debut album which was recorded within 12 hours!) . But, the most people who got introduced to Black Sabbath, start off with "War Pigs". If you decide to do this one, you should pick the "1970 live in Paris" - version. It takes you kind of back in the time. Before rambling too much, i leave it there. Thanks for all your content. Greetings from germany.
