The whole part with the "epic guitar solo" is just Devin trolling the audience. Some context: EMG TV, is the youtube channel of guitar pickup manufacturer EMG and usually they have famous guitarplayers, endorsed by their company, playing some epic shredding solos. Devin is in fact a very skilled guitarist and naturally people would expect him playing some epic solo here, instead he´s trolling us by playing the most basic guitar chords.

Dev has such an interesting story. His entire career he basically had two sides to his music, a super heavy main band, and weirder solo stuff like from this all the way to ambient melodies basically. He finally had a mental breakdown in the mid 2000s and sought help, and found out he was massively bipolar and the two sides to his music was basically his untreated illness expressing itself the whole time. Now that hes doing better it all comes together and its beautiful.

But every now and then I do drive myself too. Usually these are single gigs/bands. As w. Devon. I was immediately welcomed as one of the crew. That was 4 days, and also beeing a "tourguide" for them in my hometown. Now there is a shy guy in private. My personal high 2 was beeing driving King Diamond around. His guitar non-solo was a joke. EMG is a type of guitar pickup, and they feature guitarists who use their pickups usually playing very fast and aggressive guitar instrumentals. He is actually a skilled lead guitar player, which was what most of the people watching were expecting to see. He has another song on the channel "Willy Wonka", which is an instrumental full of difficult playing. I think that a lot of his facial expressions while screaming are just acting ; sort of a tongue in cheek (not literally) expression of a malevolent, scary character. You can tell by how quickly he transitions from that face into a more comedic one. Then there's the juxtaposition between the impression of what you just saw and the lyrics.

@@TheCharismaticVoice The piece that R Gray has mentioned is actually called "Willy Wanka"! As you can probably guess it is taking the Michael out of all the folks that shred solos but have no real emotion going on. The thing is Dev can easily do it and in this he does it whilst pulling some of the funniest faces ever committed to camera😁. He is a hoot and very funny. Canadian charm going on! I also would like to recommend (like others) either "Ih Ah" from the Retinal Circus which is a beautiful and charming duet with the utterly delightful Anneke Van Giersbergen (she really is so lovely) along with "Deadhead" from Plovdiv. Probably the ugliest man I've ever had a longstanding crush on. My introduction to his music was the first sounds of the underground tour, 2006 I think. I just started watching him again today cuz I'm addicted to reaction videos and I'm positively stunned. Its like a twilight zone episode. All these young beautiful women are just mesmerized, falling in love with him. I watched one girl react to kingdom, then show up for her next Devin reaction all dressed up and giggley like he was actually going to be there. Its insane! I bet he still doesn't believe he's attractive though. Dumbass. Devin Townsend would be attractive no matter what he looked like. It's just his twisted fucked up personality. You can't help but fall for the cute little psycho. Theres something about a guy who's funny, charismatic, talented, oh and no one mentions that he's also insanely intelligent. And now he's good looking too. At this point insecurities have got to be some kind of cosmic balance. I'd probably hate him if he knew how amazing he was. It just wouldn't be fair to the rest of us.

@@wookiespet fact is Devin suffers from bipolar disorder, and also from synesthesia. He described in a chat with the guys from the channel "That Pedal Show" (guitar gear maniacs channel.... for those who don't play guitar ) as seeing sounds as colors. He also states that his son has this perceptual "deviation". He's a kind of a singularity. He stated all over again that he wouldn't be able to play anything from his old repertoire (e.g. Strapping Young Lad) since that brutal stuff was a way to channel the emotions he felt at that time, which he can't connect to anymore. Music is just the way he found to convey his emotions, and at least for me it shows in his songs. He's a beautiful soul. Devin is unbelievably talented, charismatic, and charming as fuck. I can NOT sing a single note, but every time I hear Devin I feel like I could be a superstar! He just makes you feel like singing! If you haven't seen it already I highly recommend the video where he has technical difficulties at a concert, but engages and entertains the audience for.... idk like 20 minutes. It's about creating a stage presence, possibly even an alter-ego. Lots of band leaders and singers do that. He can be insecure and shy in his normal world interactions, but become essentially someone else when he's on stage. Beyonce and other performers have talked openly about using this technique to get over stage-fright. Many rock and metal performers use costume as part of it, but often you see as they get older they tone it down or just become more confident in their own stage presence. I suspect that this is the case with Devin Townsend.

I don't know if it's rare but I agree that it's difficult to explain how to produce such screams. I'm also a metal vocalist/guitar player and it's something that I just tried one day when starting a band (after hearing this on albums). In January 1980 I went back into the US Army and went to the Warrant Officer Academy followed by Flight School ( I flew Blackhawks after 4 years of flying Hueys. I retired in 1997. In 2007 I was called by the Warrant Officer Branch in Washington DC. They said the 1st Cav had a critical shortage of Senior Warrant Officers and Experienced Blackhawk Pilots. Especially now. Devin Townsend is a never ending source of inspiration for me. I've been a fan of his since he was in Steve Vai's band, through Strapping Young Lad, and all his various solo endeavors. I echo the sentiments of others in this thread that should you react to more of Devin's music: you MUST do "Deadhead". Plodiv is great, there's an orchestra which is fun, but for my money, his performance of the song at Royal Albert Hall is unmatched in intensity, emotion, and of course, humor. Thank you for what you do. Again, your pure delight in reacting to this music is a wonderful thing to behold. It brings me so much joy, and I can't thank you enough for that.

Strapping Young Lad may not be as classical and "nice" of a sound, but he has some vocals that absolutely blow me away. When he was younger, he had even MORE power and fry to his voice.

I rewatch this pretty regularily. You have the most expressive reactions to things, you say so much using just your eyes (I relate), and you get really excited about the technical aspects of voice and singing (which helps someone like me engage and learn more easily). I hope you and your family are doing well!

lovely lady everybody's goal in life should be to find someone that looks at them the way you just looked at Devin. Keep going with him. Maybe try Stormbending next. And of course more Nightwish please. Stargazers live at Tampere

I love how you talk about the amount of colour in Devy's voice because he has a rather rare condition called Synesthesia. People with this condition actually find it very hard to learn music theory because they see colour when they hear music. The also taste shapes sch as round and pointy when they eat... Devin Townsend is in my opinion an absolute musical genius and one of the best vocalists to have ever graced the stage... awesome video's on one of my favourite musicians
