I heard Randy Rhoads for the first time in Crazy Train, and I was blown into utter shock and disbelief at his talents. This time I needed a live recording to see him in action. Couple that with Ozzy's unique singing ability and we have a performance I've now had on repeat a few times now. This was absolutely insane!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Ozzy Osbourne performing "Mr Crowley" for the first time.

This footage taped in obscurity prior to a random Canadian show was seemingly lost for decades before surfacing as practically the only live video of Randy performing that exists. That no one could know of the importance at the time. At first seeming plodding on the metronome, the two solos ..... the cameraman must have not known what was coming because he zeroed in on Randy a little slow the first time, but not the second ...... benefit from that tempo's space. Somehow Randy could pull off live versions of studio parts that were multitracked without sounding like anything was missing and even adding those squeals that are even better than hers!

Now at 52, I STILL play and STILL well up with tears from Randy's solos. Even watching THIS video and your AWESOME reactions,... I recently started getting back to my roots, (playing Ozzy/Randy Rhoads) and I notice that NO ONE, NOT ONE GUITARIST I've heard on KZbin, seems to be able to mimic Randy's playing. (Yes, I'm well aware that he triple tracked his Solos with one left, one right and the main center. It's nearly impossible to play exactly like the recordings,... But dammit, I won't stop playing these songs until I have them down perfectly, or until my fingers fall off!

I saw Ozzy with Randy at Music Hall in Cleveland in the Blizzard of Oz tour - I was about 10 rows back from Randy and I will never forget it. I had tickets to Ozzy's Diary of a Madman tour (also in Cleveland) in January of 1982, but a snowstorm coupled with a broken down car forced me to miss it (I still have my untorn ticket stubs). A few months later Randy was dead and I was pretty devastated. Just imagine what great music the world was deprived of when that happened! Randy will always be in my top 5 rock guitar players list.

I am so happy to see people still today discovering the musical genius of Randy Rhoads. He was the #1 influence on me to pick up a guitar in 1983 and I still play his guitar parts to this day. It was such a loss to the music world the day he died. Imagine what he would be doing today if he had not taken that plane ride. Great review as usual. Singing comes from a different region of the brain than speaking. That's why people with dementia struggle to remember regular things but can sing entire songs and listening to music "snaps" them out of the dementia for a short time. It's crazy to see it work. There was a famous singer (can't remember his name) who did some duets with Lady Gaga before he passed of his old, crooner style songs. He couldn't remember much of anything but as soon as Lady Gaga sang the first verse he did the rest perfectly.

Elizabeth, since you like classical guitar, you should listen to "Dee" from Randy. It's on "Blizzard Of Ozz" and the Tribute album. He considers it his signature piece. He wrote it for his mom. It's only 45 seconds long, but incredibly beautiful. I know you will like it.

Strong recommendation for "Diary of a Madman," which is another level of genius. I rather enjoy Blizzard of Ozz, but I think that the Diary album is a step up in maturity of songwriting and production, at least in part because of the deepening of Ozzy's and Randy's friendship and familiarity. Many songs on Diary of a Madman are amazing, but I think the title track is the peak.

You should've seen her reaction to Dimebag's guitar solo in Cemetary Gates (Pantera). She LOVED it! But then, who wouldn't? I can't imagine anyone with any sense or taste who couldn't appreciate the extreme amount of talent Dime and Randy had. It makes me sick how soon they were taken from us. The world was robbed of their greatness and of even greater things to come from them both.😢

Well said. As a guitar player I think it's neat that a vocal coach would pay attention to the guitar. What I've noticed is that she listens at a different level. She picks up on things and then some.

Thanks for your words about Randy. I was a 13 year old guitarist and at his passing I haven't been the same. It drove me to play my guitar relentlessly and here I am 40 years later still attributing my playing to him. I still tear-up at the solos for Mister Crowley. Truly so much potential the music world lost.

Someone is now a Randy fan and knows why after 2 Ozzy albums, he's one of the greatest that ever lived. Still sends shivers up and down my spine listening to him live, and i remember seeing him live on first tour of the first album. Still blows my mind. And it's Tommy Aldridge not Lee Kerslake. But that's totally fine. Welcome to our joy of Randy.

Thank you for noticing Randy, thank you more than I can repeat - his music with Ozzy influenced me to pursue a degree in classical guitar, still hanging on to everything 'metal' in the background. He was still featured on magazine covers repeatedly decades past his unfortunate early departure, a tribute to just how much he brought to the table. He was so humble, he claimed his sound was just derived from students wanting to learn Eddie Van Halen licks? He was just so studious, down to earth, wanting to learn and grow, I wish we could see what he could have done with a few more years.
