As an American, distance in Europe still fascinates me! The idea that in 4.5 hours you can be in a different country with so many cultural differences is astonishing! I take two trips yearly to see friends. They're both about 7 hours away in opposite directions and they're in neighboring states and everything is exactly the same as home when I get there.

I'm in Canada. The USA is literally down my road and across a river. To visit family here in Canada takes almost a week to drive to, so flying is the only option.

That's why it's so unfair to criticise Americans for not knowing languages and so on. In Europe, drive a couple of hours and you're in another country. In the US or Canada you may or not be even in another State. English is the language across thousands of miles. Some are learning Spanish, close to our Mexican neighbours. There is a pockt of French in Quebec. Still thousands of miles from swaths of the US. Switzerland itself has FOUR official languages.

I'm a 75-year-old American, and I lament that I was only introduced to another language(Spanish) when I was in high school. Thankfully, today, more grammar school-aged children are learning a second language.

We loved Geneva when we visited. We especially enjoyed the boat tour around the lake with the historical narration. The night lights on the lake are beautiful too!

Geneva is beautiful surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains and city has a view of dramatic Mount Blanc. French influenced is widespread from language to gastronomy.bring back splendid memories when we were vacationing there with my husband.❤enjoy Stephanie

I got to go at 29 and live with my grandmother for a year then two more years with a friend. Time has passed so fast I'm now 54. I miss many thing, its just such a special place. We live in Switzerland and there was just a festival in town with live music until midnight and a dj after that until 3am but on Saturday the dj kept going until 6am! 😂 Most of the time it’s quiet after 10 though. The church bells stop at 10 pm. 😊

I had to laugh at your tea on the motorway! We once (only once!) bought coffee at an aire on the French motorway, and it was so revolting my husband wouldn't drink it after a first taste. We never bought coffee at aires again and we travelled much through France over the years.

I have had many, many stops at aires in France, generally the coffee is quite good ( excellent by American standards). They range from just a pull-over with a toilet, to an excellent restaurant. They always have nice clean toilets and often have interesting objects, honeys, local specialities.
