So interested to see you took inspiration from Janet Arnold's wonderful Patterns of Fashion! The School of Historical Dress have now released Volume 5, which is grand. I learned about the series from watching the delightful Bernadette Banner's KZbin channel, which majors on historical sewing, and is highly recomended for inspiration and encouragement. Loving your Sunday Diaries!

You might like looking at the art of Vigee Le Brun who painted for Marie Antoinette’s court - formal and regal peasant (one of her issues) looks. She escaped early in the revolution and headed to the royal court in Russia. The MET did a beautiful exhibit of her art in 2016 and you might be able to find the catalogue on EBay. She is one of my favorites and brings the women to life.

Ohhh you need to view Outlander, Season 2 Outlander. Costume designer, Trisha Biggar, designed some glorious costumes for the French Court in 1743 or 74. One gown was hand painted for a garden party scene. I understand that she researched the period & had to combine the trends with the main character’s personality. Visual treats!

You are so talented. That cape is impressive. My great grandfather was a furrier in Berlin in the 1930s and it sounds like a difficult trade from what my grandmother recounted. Apparently he used every single part of the animals he had including paws to make collars! I would love to find one of his coats but tracking one down seems nigh on impossible.

Costumes are such fun, as is couture. A distant cousin was a huge collector of Cristobal Balenciaga couture, and considered her fitting's by the Spanish designer as a "job that she worked at". As she aged, she realized she had a responsibility to see that they would be taken care of and survive, because her collection of 300 pieces was a historical statement about design following WWII. The entire collection was given to the Texas Fashion Collection.

Stephanie, my daughter studied ballet at high school and instead of continuing ballet into university she chose to study costume making, millinery, make up, hair, etc at Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts. She then continued to teach at the University, went on to work for The Australian Ballet and now teaches at the Victorian College of the Arts. She now specialises in tutus. SO nice to hear how many of us girls were given sewing machines in high school that are still our main use machines. This goes with the fur also, since I agree too that what has already been sacrificed and worked into an article of use, not just extravagance can be best managed by not wastefully making it trash or pollution in the earth now by dumping or burning it. I understand people want to potentially get rid of anything to do with a past ideal, but historically it has been proven these are mistakes. The amount of ruined buildings, art, writings, paintings, etc. now lost that have been destroyed simply to destroy something are lost history forever.

Our one daughter in law makes Renaissance-style clothing for all those in the Revolutionary war programs in the area. When she and my son married they asked me to officiate and I did for their wedding. She made all the clothes and it was very beautiful. They had a three-gun salute ( as they are in a group that does the Revolutionary re-enactments, and so they cam for this reason and the wedding was a success. Seh made Sachets and various other items for that era of time to be used for the wedding. This reminded me of their wedding and just needed to share. It is amazing that you sew so lovely Stepnaie like my daughter in law. I am not much at it myself. Wish i could do it though. Absolutely adore the dancing and programs you have with the costumes though and look forward to seeing more. Enjoyed the one with Selmer teaching the Tango. Everyone did so well and seem to enjoy the dancing,

Most historical clothing are made from many parts. Parts that can be interchanged with other parts. A one piece dress was not the norm. It's easier to make various parts, bodices, skirts, sleeves, stomacher ect. In this way one can wear various pieces together for an entire new look. It's also much easier to clean these smaller parts than a 10yard dress. Priorattire, on utube is another good site to see how different components are worn.
