The Chateau Diaries

4 жыл бұрын

This Sunday join my friend Oliver and I as we go to the tiny village of Fresselines, to visit the spot where Monet created a series of paintings of the river Creuse. This largely overlooked series of paintings marked a turning point in his artistic technique, and Ollie tells us why we have the changeable local weather to thank for that!
Escape to the chateau with ’The Chateau Diaries’ 🏰
In 'Sundays at the Chateau', chatelaine Stephanie answers all your questions about life in the 16th century Chateau de Lalande, and introduces you to the cultural and gastronomic treasures of France ❤️
A very special thank you to all of you who have become Patrons of the Chateau de Lalande. You have made The Chateau Diaries one of the top 1000 Patreon accounts in the world, and have transformed not only out lives here, but the future of this beautiful chateau! I’m overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity. On behalf of this beautiful chateau that will continue to survive and flourish because of you, thank you!!!

I too have changed my viewing habits. In the past I did not watch much of what I call idiot tv. The mainstream, I only watched PBS and TVO. Now I've discovered this whole new world of YT. With blogs and documentaries. They are so interesting , from homestead farmers , artisans ,pioneers, adventurers, travellers historians and artists of all kinds. It has brought the world to my living room. The Chateau Leland is one such vlog. Stephanie and mommies and her friends and guests are a breath of fresh air. I have even been inspired to open our own YT Channel to record our adventure with our new self built home and garden and property adventures. Loving it in our retirement.

As a child, I remember becoming aware of famous paintings and the ones I liked best were called the Impressionists. It wasn't until some time later that I understood the meaning and that it was a movement that flourished in the face of oppression. From the beginning of time all of "The Arts" have been instrumental in fighting oppression. Thank you again and always Stephanie for your SHARING SOUL: the journey to this enchanted place, the idyllic picnic, Oliver and the joy in his face. What a beautiful gift.

I have a question for you Oliver- when I was in art college I had a theory that the Impressionists has vision problems. Many of them went blind in later life if I recall (perhaps from the chemicals in the paints?) Indeed when I don’t have my contacts in, the world looks Impressionist. No slight to the genius of how they captured light but perhaps they saw light differently than other people?

I found the "les las" farm on google. It might come with large grounds on top of the large barn. But what a find! Of course an apartment at the Chateau might be better fitted for Oliver for breaks on his own, but for a family retreat its a great fit and probably not that expensive.

I was search to but hadn't found it. Thank you for sharing! I'm curious how long it would take to find the owner and complete the sale.

@@michellezevenaar Locating the owner is not that difficult. Property records are very well kept in France. On google maps look for Les paucheres near La Lande, and just off the hamlet you have a farm called Les Las. Completing the sale that's another ordeal all together. Most likely this might be property held by several members of a family. If they all agree to sale you might expect to close the sale in 4 to 6 months. To access the property records you need to contact "le cadastre" of the Departement (Haute Vienne). If you are serious your best bet is then to contact a notaire in Limoges or La souterraine and have him estimate the property and contact the owner on your behalf with an offer. Are you British?

@@moinature803 very interesting. I'm dutch actually. Does nationality make a big difference in the sale of a property in France?

I can't begin to express how wonderful this particular episode was. I have never been one for art galleries...after about an hour and a half and my eyes glaze over. I belong sporadically to a French conversation group and occasionally there have been "field trips" to investigate various aspects of French culture. They are usually visits to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. About 4 years ago there was an exhibition of the works of Gustav Caillebotte with a short talk afterwards giving some background of Caillebotte and his works. It was so interesting to have some of the background of Caillebotte explained as to how it applied to his various works. His wealth afforded him many avenues; lawyer, painter, engineer. I particularly loved how his engineering background was brought into his paintings. For instance, in a couple of his paintings he used an iron bridge as an element of the composition. His attention to the detail of the rivets in the bridge fascinated me. Which brings me to the episode with Oliver. It was a joyful episode as are all of Chateau Diaries episodes. It was such a painless way to learn art history. I so enjoyed his enthusiasm as he explained all of his and Stephanie's experience at Fresselines as he explained Monet. I probably would not have enjoyed learning about Monet so much in a standard classroom setting. I hope that Oliver returns and can do more of these art history 'lessons'. It was something I could absorb easily and have it 'stick' Thanks again for much enjoyment with your series and continued success. I would love to visit sometime after the 'plague' is over to experience all the joy at Chateau LaLande. I hope Oliver buys that house!!! I am from Annapolis, Maryland

That house is meant for Oliver. Quite a few signs from the Universe to have him do that. What a highly enjoyable story telling of Monet, yes, including the gossip part but also how the weather affected Monet and the thing he had done just to achieve the ideal painting in his mind. Such a beautiful content. Thank you.

What a fabulous Sunday. I am so excited to be in this charming town where Monet lived and painted. Prior to seeing this, I thought Giverney was everything. This delightful picnic was enhanced by you, Stephanie with your joy and reading of Monet's letters and also Oliver's enthusiasm and knowledge. Another reason to come and stay at the Chateau. I loved this day, thank you so much. Mary Ann Recht. I cannot forget the cows!

Thank you Stephanie and Oliver for a fun and informative day in the countryside. Always glad to know more about Monet ("constantly chasing nature") particularly from a spot where he painted. I hope Oliver can find out if the seemingly- abandoned property. is available.

This is a reminder of the Art History courses when I studied at college in New York. There were many trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view and write about the paintings. At that time I worried about the grade I would earn. I visited the Louvre Museum when I was in Paris. This vlog is enjoying Art History for the love of Art and personal enrichment. Thank you Stephanie and Oliver!!
