04:14 (The legend of Dickie Moltisanti)
06:24 (Who killed Dickie?)
09:01 (Why was he killed?)
With the news that Sopranos creator David Chase and one of the original Sopranos directors Alan Taylor were making a new Sopranos prequel movie, The Many Saints of Newark, fans were excited. Not least because, as the title suggests - Many saints translating as Moltisanti - the new Sopranos movie would centre on Tony’s mentor, the great Dickie Moltisanti, played by Alessandro Nivola in the movie. Fans speculated that since Dickie is the main character, surely he must die in the end to give the film closure, and if that happens, we’ll finally have this mystery solved. And as it turned out, that is exactly what happened.
So who killed Dickie Moltisanti, and why? Was it really the cop? Was it Tony Soprano? Johnny Boy? Uncle Junior Soprano? Why was Dickie shot?
-------------------------
Why did Uncle Junior kill Dickie Moltisanti? Did Paulie Gualtieri shoot Dickie Moltisanti?

I still can’t believe it was Junior who ordered the hit. And the crazy thing is, nobody ever found out. And because Junior ended up getting dementia, he’ll likely go to his grave with that secret! Chrissy went to his grave thinking a cop killed his father, and that he had killed the man responsible. And Tony, the man himself, he went about life never knowing that his childhood hero was killed by the very man he used to play catch with!

Not sure who pulled the trigger but I believe Junior's motive for having Dickie killed was solely down to the fact that he didn't like to be made fun of. Season 1 of Sopranos proves a lot of this - Junior had Brendan whacked because he and Christopher were disrespecting him in the truck hijackings, he had Donnie killed because of a joke he made about Tony's mother, which Junior tells Mikey, "Next he'll be making jokes about me", and he was humiliated when Tony made open references about his sexual secrets, resulting in him to lash out against Bobbi Sanfillipo.

This also would explain why Paulie sometimes acted jealous of the relationship between tony and Christopher . Maybe paulie thought Jr would take him under his wing after dickie died ? But instead Jr took tony under his wing the same way dickie did . Then later on Tony took christopher under his wing making paulie and tony's relationship a little estranged . As tony grew in power , chris was being groomed to be the underboss who tony only gave his orders through .

It was known that Gandolfini and Chase fought a lot regarding scripts, charaterizations, and story continuity, which made the series better for it. You're a liar. It was never known that Gandolfini and Chase fought over scripts. There were absolutely NO changes to the scripts. Other than Tony Sirico telling them he'll never play a rat. And change a line where his character called a bully, to a psycho. He refused to play a rat or a Bully. Outside of that, there were absolutely NO changes to the scripts. Dozens of cast members (INCLUDING Gandolfini) and crew have verified that information in several interviews. Why would you assume something and post it without fact checking it first?? That to me is the same as a lie.

I thought Paulie was the voice as well. Until I saw Jilly Ruffalo listed in the credits played by Ed Marinaro. Which led me to investigate in what scenes I missed him. Until I found out the scene was cut from the film. The original scene was Junior giving the hit to Jilly to carry out. I’ve watched interviews with actor Ed Marinaro and it is indeed his voice that is heard over the phone saying “it’s done”. So I believe Jilly had Barry Haydue carry out the hit. Exactly how Tony explains it to Christopher.

The revelation of Dickie being killed on his orders is also in line with the many layers, and layers of lies and misinformation that this group of characters plant, then let fester and grow through the years. The film was well done and it keeps true to the Soprano's lore.

I believe they did an outstanding job.. my husband felt the same way at first when he watched it, but after I explained to him a few things he sat back & watched it again paying CLOSE attention, & now he loves it just as much as I do.. it may seem mediocre to the eye (in comparison to someone who has never seen the Sopranos, & they decide to watch this movie for the first time, not having any knowledge of all of the “backstory” or events that previously happened, but in actuality the events in the Sopranos were all the aftermath to this movie) it’s fucking GENIUS!

Agree 100%. Uncle Junior was simply riding on Johnny Boy Soprano's coattails and no one really respected Junior. I always considered Uncle Junior as the male version of Tony's mother, Livia Soprano (a pessimistic, pain in the bum). Dickie Moltisanti was regarded as a heroic and highly influential figure among the DiMeo family. Should Johnny Boy Soprano been killed, "Eckley" DiMeo, would've grown very tired of Junior Soprano and had him taken out and promoted Dickie Moltisanti. You don't think Uncle Junior knew this? Fastforward: Tony has the support to take over the family after Aprile's death, but fears Junior will start a war if he is not named boss and the family didn't need the attention of law enforcement attention.

In the series Tony has a deep love for Junior, a love of family. But Tony had a deeper love and awe of Dickey. Dickey brought him up and schooled him according to the series. There’s no way Tony would have had those feelings for Junior if he knew Junior was involved in Dickey’s death. According to the series, Dickey definitely took out Jilly Ruffalino’s eye because Chis admit’s he always heard it all about Dickey taking out someone’s eye. The only thing that can make it all tie up is Junior hired Jilly to kill Dickey cuz he knew Jilly had a beef with him. Jilly subcontracted the hit out to Barry Haydoo. Tony never knew Junior’s involvement.

This is the best mediocre movie I’ve ever seen. Perplexing. Wasn’t totally disappointed, and yet definitely wasn’t blown away. Great acting, interesting characters, some cool action sequences, deeper themes of family, loyalty & betrayal… and yet the sum is LESS than it’s parts. Disjointed? Lacks flow? No focus? Yes, yes & yes. I want “Many Saints” as a series, taking a deeper dive into these plot lines which never quite come together (despite the finality of the ending). While I give the movie an overall thumbs-up, I can’t fully recommend this movie to anyone other than hardcore Sopranos fans like myself.

I had the same feeling at the end of the film. Where the Sopranos series dug DEEP, Saints seems to only scratch the surface. A 10 part series would have served Saints much better. Junior falling and Dickie laughing was the last straw for Junior. If you watch the movie, there are several instances where Dickie teases Junior, or others tease Junior and Dickie legitimizes that teasing (the bar scene when Junior's goomar doesn't show up, and gets teased that she is cheating on him). Then when Johnny Boy gets out of prison, Johnny Boy states to Junior, "Why can't you be more like Dickie"...all of these assertions anger Junior, but the last straw is when Junior falls and Dickie is laughing at him. These are subtle clues as to how Junior takes everything so seriously and doesn't like being teased.

Wouldn’t call it a huge disappointment, I did however wish the movie was longer to give more development to many of its characters, especially the relationship between dickie and his father. The killing seemed very rushed with no real reason. I’m my honest opinion it was pretty good, I’m hoping the next movie, assuming there will be one can carry the imperfections of this one. I also would imagine it to be based around Tony and his uprising. Many Saints did feel like a bunch of clips from a show, I really think this could have been a great short series.

I kind of liked it but like many here, I feel this needed more time to expand into the characters. Ray Liotta (whom I like a lot) didn't make much sense a s a character, didn't see the point of that storyline. Same as the italian wife. Harold surviving that war at that time is just not realistic. That's crew would have been dealt with swiftly much earlier. And anyway these "minor" groups tended to be associated, not rival. Not much on Paulie, Silvio was a caricature. This needs another prequel to explain how Tony eventually grew into the ranks.

Second look what happened when Dickie simply drove through the black neighborhood earlier in the film, he got f**** up and almost lost his car to regular angry people. Lastly you are delusionally fantasizing about the mob's power they lost entire cities to "minor groups" after the Rico's and they never had full control before. Most gangs date back to the fifties and late sixties and they had no ties to the mob, big cities during these times were WARZONES people weren't sucking off the mob how you imagine. On top of that they were infighting constantly Dickie getting killed by Junior before retaliating against Harold was very realistic.

The only thing this movie showed to me that there’s still a high demand for “All Things Sopranos”. Hopefully this movie shows there’s a huge demand and David Chase gives us more. Going to the movie I was disappointed to not see the Old Man and actual boss of the family(unless I missed it). No Ray Curto who was one of the oldest copos. Where was Feech? Where was a young Ralph, Larry Boy? Richie? I wanted to see the Soprano family members of that era. Hopefully they continue with Tony’s rise through the family so we can at least see the card game heist and who really saved them. Was it Richie, Johnny Boy, or both. My guess would be Tony’s Dad considering who he was, but Richie around that time was a Capo and a force so who knows. I liked the movie but was left with too many questions. I thought Sil and Tony was childhood friends and ran in a crew with Jackie, Tony, and Ralph growing up? On the movie it makes it seems like Sil was much older. It was established that Puss and Paulie was older already. Idk 🤷🏾‍♂️, been holding that rant in for awhile, just hoping this movies showed the public still craves Soprano content and they give us more of it!

The idea of Junior taking over Dickie's operations is interesting. Couple things though. 1. The movie leaves the structure of the family pretty ambiguous. DiMeo is still the boss, but a minor character. It's plausible to read Dickie as capo of a major crew. But for most of the movie, the crews aren't clearly defined and Johnny, Dickie and Junior just seem to vaguely outrank everyone else, even if Johnny and Dickie are more respected. 2. The show clearly establishes Junior as having a number of soldiers his own age in addition to some muscle Tony's age or younger: Beppy, Murf Lupo, Bobby Sr. and Tommy. Some of the old guys still kick up to Junior in the loony bin after he shoots Tony. So it would stand to reason he already had some supporters in the family by the time of Many Saints.

You see it with people's reaction to other things that have YEARS of lore it built on that Hollywood takes a swing at. Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil currently. I don't understand how people expect a film to include all of the lore within 2 hours when the show/source material can't even do that in such time. Idk what the disappointed fans were expecting. @CJWAll, that’s a solid post. Most of the bad reviews are from die hard fans that wanted Season 8 of the series. I feel there were too many fan service moments. How many times does JR have to say “ya sista’s cunt!’? And still says it 40 years later, and “what a blow”. We get it. That’s JR Soprano. What COULD have been done was more thematic development on why in God’s name JR would whack Dickie. Yes, Jr was a very jealous, insecure, petty person. But...a little more development? I guess that would have taken the shock value out if the phone booth scene. Sil’s physical mannerisms were great. His voice? Cartoonish. I really liked the Dickie character, and that actor was superb. Think of the whole thing as Chrissy’s screenplay he’s reading to us...from hell!!! And if you look close at the trigger man, he’s wearing a Member’s Only jacket!

I dont think junior had a problem with getting it up, his back was hurting. Plus you mentioned events in the movie being the reason why he got so upset with tony joking about his oral sex with his girlfriend but david chase hadnt written or even planned many saints of newark at that point so that cant be it. It was a thing in the mafia that men dont give head.

Chase might not've planned Many Saints at that point, but, when he was creating the characters, I'd bet that little details like that (even if he hadn't figured out the 'how or why') would've been known to him as part of that creative process ^_^

It baffles me that people disliked junior having Dickie killed. I highly doubt it was just for him being made fun of. The whole essence of sopranos is that you don’t truly understand the characters’ emotions or motivations. Throughout the whole film, you think Dickie will be killed due to the rival black gang, but it turns out it’s for a supposedly stupid and petty reason from Junior. That really felt like a David Chase moment, to have this larger than life character removed for reasons we don’t fully understand.

There were elements of the movie I didn't like, but Dickie getting killed at Junior's behest is a perfectly Sopranos trajectory. All along, the series sets up characters for some operatic arc, only for them to get killed for stupid, petty reasons that make no sense. You think you know how a guy is going to die in some tit for tat, but then he slips on a bar of soap and breaks his neck. Which is fitting, because these are mobsters. They get into the rackets because they want the easy way out in life--hanging out in strip clubs all day, wearing track suits, quipping about old movies--and they end up tripping over other gangsters who are equally lazy, stupid, petulant, spiteful, and jealous. When they do finally get together on some score, they end up stealing from each other, or stepping in each other's toes and screwing it all up.

"A David Chase moment," people fail to realize how much of an influence Terrence Winters (among others) played on The Sopranos.. There's a good reason why David Chase worked in anonymity prior to Sopranos-and did virtually nothing afterwards aside a B movie (cause his life goal was to be a filmmaker) 🥴 This whole entire plot makes absolutely no logical sense whatsoever: There isn't a shot in hell Johnny Boy would tolerate this, besides Johnny being a huge earner and a legend (and a member of their crew) he was a close friend; we're also expected to believe Junior is this petty-bitter-angry-old man (at 40yrs old & higher up than Dickie) who's gonna murder this guy for laughing at him?? The same guy we've seen act on logic/common sense and use his wits to make decisive decisions, Tony's second consigliere and the Don Vito to his Michael Corleone (until the dementia)... This whole story wouldn't of even held up, they'd of killed this "Jilly Ruffalo" literally days within finding out who pulled the trigger (some jerk off beat cop at the time-not a detective with pull), and if this other made guy was implicated he'd of fervently denied any involvement.. We also know for a fact it was Jilly, as "Jilly Ruffalo" was credited as a character in the movie 👀

@@CommanderLongJohnyou only mention the laughing part when there’s plenty of other reasons for his resentment towards dicky, mentioned in the video your commenting on lol, that was just the cherry on top. And junior literally tried having his own nephew killed even after he let him be boss… why are you acting like that’s out of his character? People don’t just get old and change their entire personality and identity 😂

Killing Dickie might be the best thing that Junior ever did, even if it was out of spite. Dicky was a horrible person, who killed people close to him when he got angry. Maybe Dickie would have gotten Tony away from the mob life, and he didn't because he was killed, but even if he did that he would still of been awful. Christopher went to hell, not because of Tony, but because of himself. Maybe Tony goes to hell, because of Junior

I recently heard the nature-film narrator David Attenborough referred to as a "naturist", implying that while he is filming and commenting upon lions on the Serengeti, he and his family are relaxing in the nude with a group of German and Danish tourists. David Attenborough is in fact a NATURALIST. The irony lies in his brother Richard Attenborough staring in Jurassic Park.

Junior being behind Dickie's assassination in Many Saints seemed kind of random to me when I saw it, but this video makes it seem more logical. I never bought the idea that the cop Christopher kills in season 4 was the man who murdered Dickie. It seems impossible that the mob would have let someone who killed a made guy live, let alone worked with him for decades after the event. I always took it to be a lie Tony told Christopher to motivate and build affinity with him. I assume Tony wanted the man dead for other reasons.
