I tried both bikes on the same day and agree completely with your conclusion! I think the best looking Thruxton they ever did was red with the half fairing 👌

I am a big fan of the Thruxton and Speed Twin 1200. They are beautiful bikes. Personally I own the Scrambler versions of the 400, 900, and 1200. When asked the 1200 engine is wonderful and has lots of power. But the most common question is which makes the most sense and why I really like my 1200 for the most power and perfect bike for travel, and the 400 for a super light and flickable bike around town, the 900 is the most versatile, most approachable, easiest to ride, most cost effective, and best all around bike like a Swiss Army knife. I highly recommend the 900 iterations of Triumph’s Modern Classic series… so if you are looking for something in the Speed Twin realm, take the Speed Twin 900. However, motorcycling has a lot to do with your heart and desires and sometimes we make decisions against logic and common sense as it could be the case with the Thruxton and Speed Twin 1200… on the danger that you need a second mortgage, the wife threatens you with a divorce, and the shrink questions your sanity during your next session, do what feels right for you…

I have a 2016 Thruxton R 1200 with the throttle spacer. Makes a huge difference in smooth throttle application on these big twins in my opinion. Getting up into my 50s now and wanting a more upright riding position. The Speed Twin 1200 appears to be the ticket. The Thruxton R is such a beautiful bike I have been reluctant to give it up just yet. Thanks for your review.

It’s defo time to release the Speed Twin RS, especially after they have discontinued the Thruxton now. Nice review and comparison thanks, much appreciated, keep up the great work! Ps got a Thruxton and I love her so much I will never ever part with her, in fact I am contemplating getting buried with her 😂

Nice overview, Bry👍 As an ex-Speed Twin 1200 owner, I agree with pretty much everything you said. However, I’m very surprised you found the stock, almost slick tyres acceptable in the wet. I found mine almost dangerous on the couple of occasions I got caught out in a downpour. Fortunately, it doesn’t rain too often here in the Algarve. Keep up the good work, it’s refreshing to have input on bikes like these from younger, female riders😊

sign of the times , potholes are now apparently an accepted everyday hazard rather than the exception. why the power difference, they are the same motor ?., is ithe exhaust / mapping that makes the difference?. Those down pipes on both are really blued, is this common on all of them or a fueling issue, or just thin metal?.
@skymningforelsket13027 ай бұрын
Usually the biggest factor affecting power differentials is camshafts. My guess is, just a guess, the Thruxton has cams with more lift and duration. But there's a ton of other factors that could affect it, too: differences in valve sizes, fueling amount and richness of mixture, air inlet flow, exhaust restrictiveness, compression ratio of pistons, spark advance and so forth. Exhaust header pipes have always discolored from time immemorial. Although I've noticed stainless seems to discolor the least. Only black pipes like you see on a dirt bike don't discolor. Nowadays those header pipes get hotter than ever (and they have always gotten very hot). The catalytic converter tends to raise the temperature of the pipes both pre and post-cat. Higher pressure = higher heat, and there's greater pressure inside the header pipe because the catayltic converter is restricting its flow. Usually nowadays it's there's an inner separate pipe surrounded by dead air space, that fits inside the outer pipe, to minimize discoloration.

I've never been able to warm up to these water cooled Triumphs in the same way I do with the air cooled ones. They went to 270 cranks. The 360 firing order is really what makes these bikes what they are, and now it's gone. They also went overboard with the BLACK BLACK BLACK everywhere on the engine and rims , even the mirrors! To me all the blacked out bits look ...let me be nice about it...NOT as good as chrome or polished metal. Then they give you useless 1/2 front fenders , not the full beautiful metal fenders on the 2001-2015. T100 . They also aren't offered in those classically styled dual-tone paint schemes, anymore. You know, the swooping stripes that come down either side of the tank, and narrow as they move further back, set off by a pinstripe. Then, they got the drive modes and traction control and anti locks, which maybe you can shut it off or maybe not? Guy Martin blames a really bad wreck on traction control. I don't want to experiment to test if the traction control saves me or kills me. I don't know how the traction control being activated will affect my balance, traction, handling or speed, and if it causes something unexpected or sudden or undesirable regarding my control over the bike, I don't want to wind up with my face on the road. Now they want to charge, what, $379 for an "accessory" center stand, when the originals had i a center stand standard, this is an add-on on a motorcycle that costs $15,000? Nice bikes they are! Just not for me! They've moved too far away from the essence of the thing!

@@alandmorley Yeah, I agree. Motorcycles should shine, and be painted with bright colors. Not dark and monochrome like a morose hearse. Ever heard the song Kodachrome? My riding buddy has a Thruxton RS. I ride a T120. He can sit that Thrux for a maximum of about two hours in a day, where my T120 is all-day comfortable. He also has about 50 miles less range due toa smaller gas tank and considerably less MPG. True, he wins in any contest involving speed and power, but his bike's limitations curtail its usefulness when riding any distance at all.

The mistake you make is thinking that the “900” has anything to do with the “1200”. They are not related at all. In fact, not long ago, the 900 was name after another line of bikes - the “Street” line - same as the 900 scrambler. This is because those two bikes are related. So comparing the 900 to the 1200 is pointless and shows your ignorance
