It’s probably because they are both trying to make each other happy, and Monica is aware of chandler’s fear and how she is perceived as commitment obsessed so she has never wanted to push him into anything that makes him uncomfortable

I just love the duo "Ross and Rachel" as friends. They live in constant tension, between provocations and clever moves, trying to outdo each other all the time. And this is coming from a huge fan of theirs, as a couple too. In fact, I think that sometimes their friendship takes a back seat above all else, and it is one of the best that exists between the six of them.

24:47 Re "just a comedy": it's also a show from the 90s. _Brooklyn Nine-Nine_ is a comedy and has a character with major dad-issues, but they do explicitly reference him going to therapy in later seasons. _B99_ began in 2013.

In Chandler case he doesn't need therapy cause he never had any beef with his father ..rather chadlee couldn't forgive his father for the gay behaviour....he just couldn't accept that and felt embarrassed...his father otherwise was very supportive of him
@aquele4virou3
@aquele4virou3 19 күн бұрын
@@sahishnukonar7634that’s not at all why Chandler and his father weren’t close. It had nothing to do with him disapproving “gay behavior”, but how the gay behavior came to be. His dad cheated on his mom with the pool boy, they revealed it to him at Thanksgiving, he left and then both his parents seem to have been both remiss of his childhood, but also always embarrassed him with their antics and forwardness. Chandler was a shy boy who used human as a coping mechanism. He also was a rich boy with absent parents. He was sent to an all boys school, probably because his parents didnt have a lot of time for him. It’s implied multiple times his father would make it all about him, and his exploration of his sexuality and identity, which of course would embarrass a young boy who barely got his parents’ attention to himself. Chandler even described his dad as “an alcoholic blond who chased younger men”. So I don’t think his problem with his dad was that he was gay, but how he behaved once he comes out, especially around him, prioritizing himself over his broken relationship with his child who had abandonment issues. The fact Chandler was even willing to be part of the show implies he tried to accept his father, but it’s clear both his parents were somewhat immature and unwilling to listen to his grievances.

It always made me happy that Monica arranged for them to go see Chandler's dad. It's always been one of my personal favorite moments of the show. I will say though that I do wish there was more to the scene like Chandler and his dad having a private heart to heart where they truly reconcile. It also always seemed to me that his dad wasn't all that bad. Like he seemed to always make an effort to be a part of his son's life. I also apologize if we're not supposed to refer to his dad as "he." I was never sure if it was implied that the dad either had a sex change or is non-binary or just a man who dresses in drag.

Right? And especially with LGBT themes all around. There was a lesbian wedding, guy-on-guy/girl-on-girl kissing, Phoebe is pretty much openly bi, and included drag queens. It wasn't perfect, but for it's time, it was wayyyyy ahead. The only other show that could compare with this sort of inclusiveness would be Will and Grace, which I (personally) dont like as much as Friends.

19:11 - This is relatable as an LGBT person. 😆 It's strange how uncomfortable people get, either feeling the need to overcompensate with how wonderful they think LGBT people are, or get quiet and awkward as if engaging in normal interaction comes with the risk of being perceived as not totally, 100% heterosexual. I love the sincerity and all of the subtext in Chandler's plot that episode. Chandler has often mocked their father, throughout the series, and this was a great opportunity to address that. It's understandable that Chandler would have all of this resentment and exorcise that through offensive humour, but it's not until this episode that the show makes an explicit point of that. And one of the drag show scenes in particular, I think, is the strongest example of 'Friends' knowing when to play an earnest moment straight. I love it.

Chandler's dad is Kathleen Turner... an incredible actor that was first noticed in the movie _Body Heat_ (wayyyy worth watching!). She is also the voice of Jessica Rabbit in _Who Framed Roger Rabbit._ _Romancing the Stone_ is one often reacted to, but my personal fave of hers is _Peggy Sue Got Married_ - it came out right after _Back to the Future,_ but more for chicks. And PSGM also stars a very young Nicolas Cage and even younger Sofia Coppola, Cage's cousin. Kathleen Turner is scrumptious.

Back when the show first aired the clip show episodes actually served a purpose as it was before streaming services and people could binge an entire show/season in one go. Kind of like a "previously on..." but with a specific theme, like Monica and Chandler's relationship in this instance. I understand why people aren't the biggest fans of these episodes, especially while "binging" them, but I love them. However, of course they're not as good as the regular ones and E22 is so good with Chandler & Monica, Ross & Rachel and Joey & Phoebe with the panties 😂 Oh and Chandler definitely needed therapy. "What’s wrong with me? Oh! Don’t open that door!" is something my friend and I say all the time 🤣🤣 Fun facts: Chandler's dad is played by Kathleen Turner who has starred in movies like Peggy Sue Got Married The Man with Two Brains, Jewel of the Nile, Romancing the Stone, The War of the Roses and The Accidental Tourist. She also voiced Ressica Rabbit. In a previous episode, Chandler named a list of women he could sleep with without his girlfriend getting angry. One of them was Jessica Rabbit. Kathleen is known for having a fairly deep voice for a woman. I was never sure if the character was supposed to be trans or a gay man who worked as a drag queen. Marta Kauffman, one of the co-creators, said she now regrets the representation of the character and confirmed she is a trans woman (as in someone born in a male body but identifies as a woman). Kathleen has also said in the last few years that if the show was being made today she never would have taken the role, because she would be taking a job away from a trans woman. The waitress at the drag show is played by Courteney Cox's then-brother-in-law Alexis Arquette, who would later come out as transgender. She tragically died in 2016 at the age of 47 due to cardiac arrest caused by a myocarditis stemming from HIV. Just as a reminder, Courtney’s husband at the time was David Arquette, Ursula’s stalker in S3 and Dewey in the Scream series. They met filming the first movie. And the first officer is played by Mark Consuelos. He's never been in Stranger Things but he's been in Riverdale, Missing and All My Children, the last one in which he met his wife Kelly Ripa and they host an American morning talk show called Live with Kelly and Mark. Dacre Montgomery is the guy who plays Billy in Stranger Things and he's Australian (from Perth where my uncle lives!). He was good in the Elvis movie too. Goof: When Monica yells for their drinks at the drag show, the extra behind her in blue is clearly laughing at that line.

Friends definitely suffered from some.... challenges with both Chandler's father's and the Ross/Carol story lines being a bit "bashy" on the jokes, rather to the point of tone-deafness, but honestly the portrayal of those story lines are normally quite positive. Heart-warming all around!

As someone who grew up with a gay father, in the 90s, and as such a Mother who divorced a person who turned out to be gay, I honestly think its a pretty honest and tasteful representation of real life. Its an incredibly complicated and unique situation for a child and I identified a lot with Chandler. I loved my Dad, but its not without its challenges. I spent my youth DJing charity drag shows, helping out with gay charities like PFlag, and really becoming familiar with the gay community. I have never had an issue with the gay community, its where I was raised, but just because my father was gay doesnt mean that when dealing with the issue we did have, I have to be waving the Pride flag all the time being a cheerleader. Same goes for Chandler, he has trauma and he should be allowed to deal with that. He uses comedy and sarcasm as a defense mechanism. The show never depicts him having an issue with his dad being gay, it shows him having an issue with his dad, and thats a very important line to differentiate.
@johnmaster3748
@johnmaster3748 20 күн бұрын
Remember that early Friends predates Ellen (the sitcom) which predates Will & Grace. The lesbian storyline (and wedding) from S1 was some of the most gay-positive and highly visible gay content on TV up to that time. That was before the push to legalize gay marriage even began! Which means Friends was kind of cutting edge radical on queer issues. No question the series was a net positive in its own time. Unfortunately, as a long-running series its time overlaps with a huge attitudinal shift in American culture. I think that you are right that a lot of this humor rooted in sexuality and masculinity (including every time one of the guys does something "girly" and gets mocked for it) has not aged well. Some of this dialog does indeed sound "bashy" in today's more tolerant zeitgeist. I see that as a product of rapid cultural change and reminds us all that the Friends we watch in 2025 is an artifact of attitudes common a quarter-century ago. I still laugh at these jokes gone "stale." But I wince, too.

Highlight episodes were so useful at the time because no one could binge or stream or look up summaries online, so it was a good way to refresh people’s memories. But yeah, it’s a little different now!

TBH, Chandler's dad seems like a retcon. Previously, he was just a gay man who liked to dress up as a woman and had his own, all-male burlesque show.

don’t worry you’re not alone i think most people have an issue with how they handled chandlers dad but it’s also not as bad as people make it out to be esp as a trans woman i think they way they did it was for the most part fine

When it comes to controversial characters, particularly in older media, I always ask myself "do I remember them in a positive way?" and "were they (good) people?". If I can say 'yes' to both these things, I tend to let it slide, that the writers 20 years ago couldn't know the state of the discussion today. Also: questionably well adjusted Ross grew up with all the attention and cis-white-normality that Chandlers Dad being queer "supposedly" denied Chandler, so its not like the show is effectively arguing that Chandlers problems are his fathers fault. The point of this episode absolutely isn't that Chandlers dad ruined his life, but that Chandler is denying himself a lot by being hung up on something that isn't important.

A car in Manhattan is a NIGHTMARE!!!!👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼😵 Parking is terrible, mass transit, cabs and delivery trucks fill up city. A garage parking spot is as costly as an apt.!!!!🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
