I was working at Blockbuster when this came out. We all had to wear Shrek ear headbands and our boss gave each of us workers a button with a different character and he decided, for fun, he was gonna call us the name of the character on our button. I was Lord Farquad! 😆

I relate to Shrek's insecurities so much. He's so used to people being disgusted by him and afraid of him that he automatically thinks that Fiona is like that too (after that failed confession). He was being a little petty, but at the same time, it was totally understandable. So many people act angry and lash out as a defence mechanism. Especially if you're used to solitude and harsh treatment from others.

When Fiona's curse is lifted, the spell says she will "take love's true form". That's why she is permanently an ogre, because that is love's true form, even though she was born human.

Fun facts about Shrek: - When Shrek went through practice audiences before premiering, All Star by Smashmouth was meant to stand in for an original song. But, the audiences loved it so much they kept it. - Shrek was meant to be a throw away movie and was “punishment” for writers and animators assigned to it. Everyone, turned it around and made it a hit. - Shrek is meant to mock the classic fantasy romance movie. Think about it. The hero is an ogre (typically the villain), the sidekick is an annoying donkey, the princess is a fiery character that can defend herself and takes joy in some disgusting things.

i love this movie with all my heart, and my favorite gag is a very subtle one. Shrek is so alone, that he needs to take a moment each time to answer his own name because nobody else has asked. and i personally do wonder how true it is that Shrek made up his name the moment donkey asked because he had forgotten if he ever had a name.

Yes! Glad I’m not the only one who noticed. Because of things like this, I still firmly believe the original stands above the sequels. The OG Shrek is, in my opinion, the last gasp for subtle comedy (with one foot still in the 20th century), while Shrek 2 is more like a “you get what you see” all-you-can-eat buffet.

I remember seeing this in the theatre with my mother and brother. My mom and I wanted to see it, and my older brother was like "I don't want to see a kid's movie". We convinced him to come, and it was so off-colour and unexpected that we all laughed hysterically. My brother enjoyed it and we rushed out to buy it on DVD when it came out. They were all really good, but I think 1, 2 and 4 are the best. Mike Myers, who does Shrek's voice is Canadian like us, so that made it extra special. Much of the humour has a Canadian feel to it.

Donkey and Dory (Finding Nemo) have the same vibe/personality, and the same relationship to Shrek and Marlin. I recently watched you react to Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, and watching this one really brought those parallels home. Yes I picked at flower petals after watching this movie, were they ever correct? No. Did I often deliberately count them before starting to get the result I wanted? Of course.

I love how Donkey inadvertently rolls a Nat 20 on his Charisma check and essentially seduces the dragon into not killing him. And then later, she ends up helping him and Shrek. Of course, with the fact that they end up in a relationship afterwards, it seems that there may have been some genuine chemistry there anyway. Also, while the Fairy Godmother who cast the spell on Fiona isn't technically a witch, she's definitely something that rhymes with witch. 🤣

I remember hearing an interesting theory somewhere that the Dragoness was once also a princess. If you look at the book Shrek was reading in the opening the princess depicted is blond, not a redhead like Fiona. And yet in the sequel we see the continuation of the book showing a depiction of Fiona in both forms complete with her red hair. So it's possible the other princess had a similar curse like Fiona that turned her into a dragon. But no one realized a dragon could be a pincess since all the knights that came would have been trying to follow the classic trope of saving a princess FROM a dragon. And at first she was forced to kill them in self defence. But eventually the time on her curse ran out and she became trapped as a dragoness forever.

So if im not mistaken I remember that back when this movie was being produced one of the people working on the film had beef with another guy not sure how he related to this BUT the name picked "Fark Wad" was literally a way of covering up "F*ck Wad" if you say it fast you can hear it. Yeah unless the person has spent half their life believing they’re ugly and that the person they love would never love them for who they are. Obviously if a person has a condition it should come from them, but Fiona is so insecure and trapped in this idea that Shrek would never accept her. I think if Donkey knows Shrek would adore that aspect of her and Fiona would never admit it to Shrek in fear of rejection, I think it’d be fine to tell him. But that’s just my view 🤷‍♂️

Huh... didn't expect the three bears here... I daresay those aren't Goldilocks' three bears XD Anyway, this movie is one that I've got a... difficult relationship with. Like... don't get me wrong, it is funny and well written, and it does make a lot of great fun at Disney's expense... but as the years have gone on, I feel like that's the part where the long-term enjoyment of the movie takes a really big hit. Having learned how much the founders of the studio (the SKG trio) had an active, burning resentment of Disney because of the politics of it all... has, in its own way, tainted the entire series for me. It is a great story, but it is a great story born of hate, and... I'm not really cool with that. It is one of the reasons that I was so surprised with how much I loved The Last Wish... it is an unbelievably amazing movie from a franchise that I border on hating.

Yeah that’s fair enough. Guess it’s a matter of perspective. I don’t they set out intentionally to make fun of Disney, no business enterprise is that dumb. They did it for their love of story telling with making fun of Disney as a fun little motivator. I wouldn’t say it goes as deep as, “they made the Shrek franchise to make fun of Disney.”

@@thecocoacouch The trouble is that Jeffrey Katzenberger (the K of Dreamworks SKG) was a former Disney executive, who was forced out of the company due to some very messy business politics. To all reports that I've heard, he carried that resentment forward with him, and I see it in Shrek, personally.

@@thecocoacouch Secondary motivator, yes, though if I'm nitpicking - it just feels like it informed several of the creative decisions, like Farquad's city... having way too many design elements that were... basically Disneyland, while also being kind of repressive and forcibly "pristine." Heck, the song that goes over the rules is just this side of It's a Small World. The digs like that are funny, and the subversion of Fiona staying an ogre against the usual trope is wonderful, and all, but... I don't know. The picking at Disney with the little jokes just doesn't sit the best with me.
