@@jeremiahrose4681 Jesus. OF COURSE the actors KNEW what was going to happen - they'd read the bloody script! And if I have to clear this up ONE MORE TIME, somebody's getting a BEATING. On the brilliant Quadrilogy documentary, Sigourney Weaver says as much that they all knew. The other poster is correct - they didn't know exactly HOW it was to be done or just how "explosive" it would be.

So my dad was a truck driver for a big oil company in West Texas. As kids, we used to hang out in the disbatch office a lot waiting for my father. Watching the crew in the movie just hanging out with one another reminds me so much of that experience. The actors really nailed that blue collar comradery.

Ash actually has a legit reason to say "Don't touch it!":" the acid blood. Parker was about to stab it with a fork, not just grab it. If it bled enough, it would eat through the ship's hull to space and potentially cause explosive decompression. Of course, he also seemed to nonchalant about the dead face-hugger. If it decomposed, it might also become acidic. Other than that, your observations were spot on and far more insightful than I've seen on other reviews.

I love that you were suspicious of Ash right from the start. He's the real antagonist, together with the Company of course. They wanted this to happen. I watched this movie back in 1979. No internet and no spoilers back then. It almost gave me PTSD! I was a teenager and I had trouble to go to sleep for a while. I really recommend watching the sequel "Aliens" from James Cameron. I hope you are going to watch Aliens after this! Love your commentary. H.R. Giger did the design for this creature and the one in Species (1995). He was a Swiss artist and he has a whole museum in Gruyeres, Switzerland. It is the freakiest, most disturbing museum I have ever been in. If you Google it, the pictures don't even do it justice.

I only learned of H.R Giger when Alien³ came out in 1992 and he was brought back aboard after James Cameron declined his direct involvement in Aliens. I could immediately recognise the feel he brought back to the craeture's lore that was clearly missing in the criminally overrated second instalment. I was overjoyed when the visceral sight of the alien's smooth domed head returned after James Cameron totally spoiled it with the bumpy scones in the second film. I'm glad they killed off his characters as punishment for his meddling with the creatures.

If you like immersive creepy horror survival based video games, then check out 'Alien: Isolation' (it fills in the gaps between the first & second films as well as even tells you what really happened to Ripley's daughter when she went to search for her mother in space. Lots of attention to detail and references to both films & SPOILER ALERT - Yes Sigourney Weaver/Ripley does make a cameo in it - both her likeness and actual voice in newly recorded dialogue exclusive to the game). Be prepared to jump alot because an alien is hiding on board your ship....It's definitely worth playing IMO 🎮

You’re absolutely right about Ripley being an incredible “strong female” character. Like Sarah Conner from Terminator, Trinity from The Matrix, “The Bride” from Kill Bill, and so many others, Ripley is smart and strong, and yet she’s still human and vulnerable. It makes us root for her and want her to succeed. Contrast that with the modern interpretation of a “strong female” in films these days… ‘Nuf said. 😅 But thank you for being so tactful in your reaction. Much respect my guy! 😎😊

I saw this with my late wife 6 months before we were married in 1979. A good friend of mine was with us and he’d seen it already. He was coaching me as to when I should hold on to her before a scary scene. It was during an afternoon matinee so the theater wasn’t full. She barely made it through. ‘’In Space No One Can Hear You Scream’’ may have been the tag line but in that theater everyone heard her! Miss you babe! Great reaction to this classic sci-fi horror flick bro. Glad you liked it.... I urge you to definitely check out the sequel 'Aliens' (1986) directed by Janes Cameron (of The Terminator, Avatar & Titanic fame)...and please view the extended special edition cut of the sequel - it adds more depth, more background info & more great character moments that were cut from the theatrical version (due to studio involvement) but the the theatrical version is still good nonetheless - it's just that the extended special edition cut adds so much more in my own opinion (plus it is the director's James Cameron's preferred cut of the movie he directed). If I were to rate both cuts/versions, it would be - the theatrical version is a 4 out of 5 stars and the extended special edition cut would be a 4.5 out of 5 stars. Can't really go wrong with either version, it's that good of a film....it is up to you if you want to continue the franchise after then (each sequel after then the fan base is mixed but each entry has their own fans). FUN MOVIE FACT - Originally the role of Lieutenant Ripley was written for a male actor (the studio was looking at Burt Reynolds aka The Bandit, Christopher Reeve - aka Superman & even Sean Connery aka James Bond for the part) but when Sigourney Weaver (who was largely unknown at the time) did a screen test, her audition moved eveyone in the feels & blew everyone away (the director, the producers and the studio, etc) that they picked her for the part immediately (and even reworked/rewrote the character just for her). She would even be nominated for a best actress nomination for the sequel (sadly she lost to Marlee Matlin that year). Still it was a good honor just to be nominated for her performances as the character. ✌️

A young modern is boarding the "Nostromo." What will he make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, no-DFX" movie? In 1979, all we got from newspaper and TV ads was: "In space no one can hear you scream." What kind of movie was this? 1:54 MU/TH/UR is the computer system that runs the "Nostromo." 2:23 The Company is sending the equivalent of a freighter crew to "do science" on an unexplored planet! 4:17 We NEVER see what kind of weapons the "away team" carried. 6:04 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 7:34 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 8:29 How's THAT for a jump scare? 8:51 This conversation has become iconic due to recent events. 9:32 The Face Hugger, grossing out audiences for years. Yes, Science Officer Ash is sketchy. 10:30 Acid Blood solved the "why don't they just cut it off him?" question. 12:31 A Props dept. work of ART, made of sea animals. DFX can't match this level of reality. 13:53 Kane's last meal. 14:41 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences for decades. 13:17 Burial at sea, an old maritime tradition to spare next-of-kin the grisly details. 16:26 Along came Jones. 17:56 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 18:50 Capt. Dallas is finally stepping up to face this horror. 20:30 You're in command, Third Officer Ripley. 21:47 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 22:39 Most people didn't see this coming. 25:42 I've read that Lambert is standing in for us, the audience. 27:34 Escape route cut off, stop Destruct to gain time for Plan B. 30:25 Tonight's entree on the shuttle "Narcissus" is Steamed Xenomorph in Shell. 31:08 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph. This and the next movie made newcomer Sigourney Weaver a major movie star and, along with Linda Hamilton, an Action movie Badass. "Jennifer Lawrence"? Who is that? Next stop: "Aliens" (1986).

That landing may have looked slow and smooth from the outside, but you've got to think of how much that ship masses - so when that landing pad comes down offset on that rock there'd be massive torque stresses transferred up through the frame of the ship causing components to overload - hence the sudden jerk and all those circuits blowing out on the bridge.

All we had was the trailer that played on TV - you can find the original trailer here on KZbin. "In space nobody can hear you scream". Ridley Scott used the 195o's horror movies of the blueprint for the movie. So, in 1979, the pacing was closer to the way we were used to at that time. Now that the audience of today has had more experience with horror and sci-fi themes it is harder to surprise people. But due to the direction under Scott's masterful skill and the design of the alien by H.R. Giger, it holds up very when compared to films since then. Now, get ready for ALIENS.

In the original concept, on her way out off the ship, Ripley finds Dallas and Brett, both immobilized and covered in similar organic tissue as was in the alien ship. It reveals the motive of the Alien: Brett is almost completely transformed into a new egg, Dallas is halfway digested by the surrounding tissue and begs Ripley to kill him. The scene was cut from the film as it slowed down the pacing at the end when Ripley was in a panic to get out of the ship. The scene was restored in the Director's Cut, but some other scenes in return were cut (I have no idea why). So if you ever want to rewatch it, check out the DC. o/

34:43 funny you should say that about gender… notice that no first names were used, just surnames (Dallas, Lambert, Kane, Parker, Ash, Brett and Ripley). Their genders were determined once the cast has been selected. The original draft had Ripley as a man, but they chose to be open minded and select the best actors/actresses and flesh the script out from there.

My dad took me and my cousin to see Alien when it came out in 1979. I was 12. At that time, everyone had seen Star Wars , but THIS movie was like nothing anyone had seen. It scared the crap out of the audience and the chestburster scene caused my cousin and I to run out into the lobby crying and screaming. My dad came out and asked if we wanted to leave. “No! We want to see the rest!” So we went back in and saw the rest of the movie. 40 years later it is still my favorite movie of all time, next to The Godfather. Ridley Scott made a perfect masterpiece. Thanks Dad. ❤️

The alien is actually another actor in costume. It be cool to play a creature and be immersed in like thinking how it would react and whatnot. If you’re into imagination for that type of acting. To me, it be super fun!

You thought it was cool to see a badass, female character played so well by Segourney Weaver. You're right. However, just take a second to consider how totally effing cool it was in 1979!! Ridley Scott was way ahead of his time making the female character the "Final Girl", as is now the parlance. Awesome flick and set the new rules!

Fun fact from a Whovian: Ridley Scott (the director) was supposed to be the set designer for the third story of classic Doctor Who in 1963. The 6 part story was "Dalek" in which the famous dw baddie was first introduced and thus would have been designed by Scott. Instead, he got the chance to go to school for directing and so the iconic Daleks were designed by Raymond Cusick when Scott backed out. In 1975 (four years before "Alien"), the Doctor Who story "The Ark in Space" aired, in which a ship of cryogenically frozen earth colonists is taken over by an alien species. This parasitic alien species breeds by laying eggs inside the human bodies. The Doctor teams up with a serious and capable female crewmate called Vira to stop the aliens from completely taking over the ship and infecting all the humans. They surprise the main characters by growing and developing at a surprisingly and alarmingly fast pace from egg to insect-like full grown alien. This DW story tipped into the relatively new "horror space opera" genre, which was ultimately popularized by Alien. I'm not sure if Ridley Scott (who was very familiar to Doctor Who) ever cited his inspiration explicitly but it's widely believed that this DW story was one of the inspirations for Scott (and potentially the writers) when working on Alien. The parallels are too strong, more than I even mentioned.

I think the reason the movie feels slow on 1st half, is because is just creating the set, the atmosphere, getting you absolutely into that stuff. And when you´re in, at ship with them, then the things go darker and creepier, and gorier, and you cannot scape. That´s a brilliant movie , with some nice sequel, (1986 ALIENS) and rest of franchise have been a bit erratic. I also love this one for the art design, that´s a beautiful sample of the sci-fi and fantsy art from late 70´s , from science fiction comic magazines like Metal Hurlant and Heavy Metal: Moebius, Chris Foss, Giger... a great bunch of talents And Ripley is a wonderful character, an heroin, a sutrvivor, who at final part feels scared, crying and yelling to the inhuman computer, but going on, and never giving up.

The multiple explosions when she detonates the ship is caused by first the Nostromo blowing up, then the sections of the refinery it was towing blowing up in sections.

Another fantastic choice! Alien is a perfect example of how practical special effects can be FAR superior to CGI. The alien was a combination of a man in an alien suit, a team of puppeteers to control the alien's movements, and KY jelly used for slime. With the right lighting and camera angles, we have a creature that is 100% better then anything that could be cooked up with CGI.

I'm not sure why so many people have difficulties understanding why their landing was so destructive. Try to imagine something as large as the spacecraft they're in. And the amount of strain and stress on the structure that happens when landing on a uneven rocky surface. It takes very little to do a large amount of damage with something that size. Now one could make the argument that something as advanced as they are in technology, should be able to plot out an even surface to land on. And that would be a good point. But you just have to remember that this movie came out in 79.

25:21 "Why are they caring about the cat?" 27:40 “Yeah, leave the cat.” How rude! Cats have been onboard "ships" for thousands of years. They were originally used for vermin extermination. Jonesy was either there to perform that age old service, or to honor the tradition. In addition, he IS a fellow Terran and mammal. Shame on you.😉

yeah in the ALIEN universe they have things called "synthetics" which are basically androids that mimic human forms. they are primarily designed to be medics, engineers, scientists, doctors...things like that...they aren't military. but there is some lore in the ALIEN universe where synthetics were used for soldiers but that was illegal (it was also never in the films, only in the games). 27:39 it blocks her path to the escape pod like a pro >:)

When Ripley says they're going to seal off the command area and vent the rest of the ship to space, that's what they should have done in the first place, at least once they knew it got big. That probably would have killed it. It also looked like they had air locks going from that area to the rest of the ship, so they could have used space suits if they needed to venture out. A ship like that probably had enough extra air to restore atmosphere anyway. Being holed and vented is always a possibility so exta air would make sense.

You know sci-fi movies looked different before Alien. Former aliens were goofy plastic rubber costumes that looked laughable. But how did we get Alien? a creature so frightening, no eyes, horrible and disgusting to look at.... Basically... A guy wanted to make a movie from the book Dune. Costume designers, starship designers, artists all over the world. Salvador Dali, h.r. Giger, Pink Floyd were involved. But it didn't go beyond the storyboard and concept art, due to lack of funding. The crew disbanded, frustrated, depressed. And one writer was seriously frustrated and depressed over that and began his work on a script for a sci-fi horror movie - Alien. They gathered many of the old crew, artists such as H.R. Giger for the Alien design. Artists for space ship designs and so forth. After the success of Alien, the members were later involved in many sci-fi movies: Blade Runner, Fifth Element and more. Some of the designs were even used for Darth Vader in Star Wars. And it all began with Jodorowsky's failed attempt at the sci-fi movie "Dune". And it spawned a new era.
