Eh... He forced Ladee Danger to declare who she was targeting to lose life from that creature's ETB, and then responded to it as if it was on the stack, but Ladee wouldn't have given up that information until it was already on the field. To prompt that knowledge is to accept that it's resolving normally for the trigger to go on the stack. Now I think he probably just wasn't thinking that hard about it, but it seems a slimy play to me if he was conscious of it.

Damen! Tough game for threat assessment! While Damen was absolutely churning through his deck, in reality he was spinning his wheels in the face of Jimmy's overwhelming board presence, goad, and noncombat damage triggers. Drawing cards is scary, but imminent death is scarier!

i was a little confused how easily the pod was distracted away from massive dragon board state because of a thin spirit shield and cards. That goading dragon did SO much to disrupt and destroy their boards!

@@skruffytiger2002Firkraag is my favorite magic card. I don’t know what it is but people SUPER underestimate his potential. Also sorry this is gonna be a little long haha. But Firkraag is constantly goading so he is protecting your life total while bringing down theirs. And if the goaded creatures hit, Firkraag gets you some card draw and he gets bigger, but if they block they are usually trading or chumping so you’re also taking threats off the board. I really don’t know what it is because yes he’s only a 3/3 at base but he gets out of hand quickly. My deck actually functions very similarly to Jimmy’s with a lot of focus on indirect dragon damage and it’s super fun. Maybe I’m biased but Jimmy probably felt comfortable never casting Sarkhon again because he basically had a second commander on the board the entire game controlling the board.

To be clear, technically speaking, Ladee doesn't have to say where the damage is going until AFTER the shaman has already resolved and entered the battlefield, meaning, if she's pointing damage, it's already too late to use mystic reflection in response as the spell is no longer on the stack. So she should have just not said where it was going until he lets it resolve. By telling him where she was planning to put the damage while it was still on the stack she gave him an opportunity he would have otherwise not had. He could have used it anyway even if she didn't say anything, sure, but he would have had to do so with less gauranteed information.

He can still ask and if she doesn't say who he knows it's coming at him so technically it does matter.

Thank you for pointing this out. To my understanding she legally declared the target, so it must've entered the battlefield already. I'd have argued that Damen couldn't have reacted to it anymore with his spell. But since neither Ladee nor Damen clearly declared whether the creature spell was still on the stack or not, and all participants accepted Damen's use of Reflection, I suppose it comes down to the table ruling it that way. But it immediately felt wrong to me, so I am glad somebody else spotted this!

@@Nerdality_Florian its important to note he asked before she did or said anything. She declares that she plays it and puts it on the table and the first thing that happens after that is Damen asking her where its going. So to say he was to late isn't correct, he literally could not have done it earlier. But he should have been more clear that he was asking before it resolved and said something like "with that on the stack I have a question". Either way doesn't really matter. He would have cast it if she didn't answer.

And you are correct, I wished he said "before the creature resolves" or "with creature spell that on the stack..." but instead asked for a target, and then even said "I am going to respond to that" as if in response to a legal target declaration. It's very muddy and highlights to me the importance of clear language. More crucially, we gotta remember that Ladee couldn't have known what he wants to respond to, while he - as owner of the spell - did. So I see the fault with him and his language. Fortunately it seems we have more of an issue with that, than the playgroup, lol.

Love Damen's deck, I have one pretty similar but looks great when it gets to work well. Only issue I had was Mystic Reflection only works if you do it in response to cast of Shaman of the Pack, not targets being chosen.

@@irishrunner27 I was thinking the same and rewatch the sequence, technically Damen asks Ladee where she will be sending the damage when the Shaman would etb whit it still on the stack, she was under no obligation to choose a tharget at that time but siad she was gonna target him so he used Mystic reflection while Shaman was on the stack, not the etb trigger (it's still a bit weird timing wise but in that way can make sense)

This is technically correct, but in casual multiplayer games it’s very common to ask “if that resolved, would it be targeted at me?” You don’t have to respond but if you don’t, it’s like saying yes.

38:28 Wouldn't [mystic reflection] have to be played while [shaman of the pack] was a spell on the stack? Because once shaman ETBs, the ETB trigger goes on the stack with a target, and theres no longer a creature entering for mystic reflection to affect. Seems like you'd have to play mystic reflection before you knew the target of shaman, as opposed to shaman entering and you being able to react with an unfair knowledge advantage from an ETB trigger, while reflection only applies prior to shaman entering, not after. Help me out.

So he did a sort of meta play which is allowed. He asked, out of the gameplay, what she was "going to choose." She stated she WILL choose him which she did not have to give out that kind of information. It's not really a type of play I like to do but it's sort of intricate politics play when you stop the game and ask for someone's opinion before something resolves. It's technically allowed.

It's not anything rule breaking, but I would like to share some tidbit of information about gameplay regarding Fabled Passage. A lot of people just kind of understand that it has the clause of "if you have 4 or more lands when the fetched land enters, it enters untapped". But that's not exactly how the rules text reads. When you fetch for a basic with Fabled Passage, that land does enter the battlefield tapped, THEN is untapped for you having 4 or more lands on the battlefield at that time. If you have anything that triggers when a tapped land enters the battlefield, such as an Amulet of Vigor or Tiller Engine, those cards see the tapped land enter and you can respond to their ability on the stack by tapping the land for mana. Again, doesn't affect the gameplay here since Damen doesn't have those pieces. The more you know.

Comment with spoilers about the match!: Absolutely amazed by Jimmys turn starting at 39:16. At that point I was 99,5% sure that Damen would win, that the whole match was pretty one sided. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, Jimmy takes him out, while having two terrors of the peaks removed in the process? Unbelievable! I was wondering why, last turn Jimmy didn't attack the battle, and now it makes sense. He could have flipped it over one turn before, but by not doing that, he protected it one turn cycle. By the way, if any of the crew ever reads this post... Im really curious... What did Rachel tutor? Was the skullclamp? We know she loves skullclamp, and that she might have tutored it. Id love to know what card it was! Really fun game, loved it. Congratz to everyone involved.

For people in the comments who didn't understand the Shaman of the Pack interaction, Damen tried to strike a deal with Ladee, with Shaman still on the stack: he lets it resolve unhindered, on the condition that the ETB isn't aimed at him. She refused, so he cast Mystic Reflection before the Shaman resolved.

When I started to watch the match and saw that Jimmy's commander is Sarkhan, Soul Aflame, I was really surprised, because Sarkhan was my commander of choice (and also the only legendary creature with commander potential that I own). I just played my first commander games two weeks ago, and I lost miserably in all of them. Nope. Damen asked where it was going while it was on the stack. You can tell because after the Mystic reflection resolves, Ladee resolved the cast trigger from Beast Whisperer.

Actually, no. Apparition exiled Jimmy's commander, and because it returned to the command zone immediately afterwards, there was no longer an exiled card for the second ability, so no token was created.

His commander wasn't in exile anymore, it went to the command zone, so you don't get a token.

@@Bedni87 yep, they made a rulling on the card to make sure it's clear how that works. 25/09/2020 If there's no exiled card when Skyclave Apparition leaves the battlefield (most likely because its first ability hasn't resolved yet), no player creates a token.

I don't think Damen should've been able to use Mystic Reflection @38:40 like he did. Ladee clearly targeted him with the shamans ability, meaning it should have already entered the battlefield.

Correct me if I’m wrong but when LadeeDanger cast Shaman of the Pack she did not have to tell Damien she was targeting him(38:20). I get annoyed when players ask for verification if a spell resolves that they are being targeted. Either play your spell or let it resolve and find out.😅

The way its handeld it's presumed to be happening before it resolves. They didn't make that very clear. She didn't have to tell him, but if she was gonna target it somewhere else then she would have said so, to avoid shenanigans, so he can ask and if she then doesn't say where it goes he knows enough.

38:40 Shaman of the Pack is an ETB trigger not a casted spell. She did not need to announce her target before that creature was on the battlefield. Damen needed to respond to her casting it, not to the trigger going on the stack, since that means the creature has already entered the battlefield and his Mystic Reflection would have no effect. I know Damen ends up losing, but that's where you need to politic and ask if they are planning on targeting you. And then take an answer of, "I can't say" as a yes, and respond to the cast.

He did respond to her casting it by asking where it's going and she could have just declined to answer. He should have been more clear he was asking before it resolved and not in response to the trigger. But he literally asks her right after she cast it, importantly before she announces the trigger or saying where it's going. Wouldn't have changed how he played it though cus if she declined ro answer he would have know where it was going and still cast it.

for engagement purposes: damon said that the fabled passage led to his land entering the battlefield untapped, but that is not quite correct. it enters tapped; fabled passage’s effect then untaps it
