When they ask why you want to join, saying “I saw the advert on tv and the opportunities look really exciting along with the career prospects.” Is a perfectly acceptable answer. You don’t need to say you’ve been thinking about it for years. They wouldn’t run TV ads if they didn’t want people to sign up after watching them.

Thank goodness for the Air Cadets. My son was an Air cadet from 13 - 19 Look up what being an Air Cadet involves and if you can fund and motivate yourself to do all those things then you don't need Air Cadets. My son did very well as a Cadet,he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

For the drugs question, if you have previously done them, you can still get in, it depends what drug it was. Anything involving needles is a no. If you had a go with weed and its been at least 2 years, you'll probably be fine

I've always wanted to join the RAF, since I was a kid. My dad did many tours in Afghanistan, and that was the catalyst for wanting to join. However, I never did air cadets, because I was hyper focused on receiving the top grades at school. How do I get through the "BS detector" of wanting to always join if I haven't done air cadets, when I GENUINELY have always wanted to join?

Dan check your previous comment, I have left some advice there for you. Infact I shall copy and paste here. Mark Norville 48 seconds ago (edited) @The life of Dan. Do not say that you want to go to war. Do not say that you want to kill people. If you say crap like that, they will think that you are a looney toon. The best advice that I can give you, is to say something like this. I have always wanted to be in the RAF, but feel that technical is beyond my capabilities, I am more of an outdoors adventurer, and a career as a gunner, gives me the challenge that I need which suits my fitness. I love that as a gunner, you are a more specialized force, rather than being just general infantry. I have spoken to a lot of ex forces, from all branches and the RAF regiment have a brilliant reputation, that I want to be a part of.

Is a toss up between gunner and ligistics ? as a driver with already having my licence and experience would this in any way be advantageous for me if i went to do driving ? Would the RAF recognises this ? Altho im after a carriers change from hgv driving it is the life of the RAF im wanting and would happily carry on driving .Thank you

Hi, one questions I have is on entering the room if it is an officer (I understand I don't salute as i don't have a headdress) but do I come to attention when I come into the room because I was in the cadets would they expect me to do it or not? I think its me overthinking but I want to pass this interview.

NO NO NO I understand this might be a bit late for you but anyone else reading this should know. It doesn’t matter if you were in the cadets or not just be a normal human you don’t salute you are not in uniform (if you are that would give the office staff a laugh that’s about it) and don’t bring yourself to attention the person interviewing will invite you into the office and ask you to sit.

I have applied but I smoked weed for years as soon as I found out about the drugs policy I immediately quit it was one of the hardest things I’ve done and I was vomiting for days after it. I am now 3 weeks gone without touching anything and living a healthy life. Should I say this in my interview when asked about drugs or is there not any point in even going now? Feel like I’ve messed up before even starting.

There’s literally no need to tell an interviewer if you’ve done a drug once or you did it a few times years and years ago. If you’re applying at 30 years old and your only use of drugs was taking pills every now and again on the weekend when you were 18, why do they need to know that? Just don’t tell them. You wouldn’t call a vegetarian of 5 years not a vegetarian because they ate meat as a child.

One thing that you have missed, unless I skipped too much is DEBT! If you have debts, then keep this from them. If you admit to having debt, 99% they will reject you until that debt is paid off. It is a chargeable offense in any force to be in debt. If say for example, you take out a loan of £500 and then default that loan, and get taken to court, you will be charged. Always impress them with money management as well.

You seem to dwell on cadets, alas that is not relevant. The board is more interested in what you know about the military, RAF and aerospace, 85% of cadets never join the military and 75% of direct entrants have never been in the cadets. Your slide at 9.36 should say CAS. You will be expected to know what countries are members of NATO

Cadets is a stepping stone, and I served with a few ex space cadets. Any cadets no matter what they are, shows that you have discipline to do something. It does give a slight advantage, however it is not really needed.
