Run it through a couple of heat up cool down cycles. Then go back and retighten the manifold bolts. If that doesn't work it's time to flatten the mating surfaces

I have owned a few Caddys , a 52 sedan, a 53 convertible, a 60 coupe, a 60 Limo, a 66 limo, a 68 sedan, a 70 coupe. Same problem. Manifolds heat up, rain water splashes up, or cold weather too, so the manifolds actually warp. Some times the warping pops the bold heads off. I removed them, had my exhaust manifolds resurface. One time a machinist just pressed it down on a sanding belt table. Within a few seconds all ports were even again. New gaskets, never had the problem again. Nice job Ben ! and Nice Caddy too ! Peace.

Hope you don't mind having to cup your ear to hear what people are saying years from now, because you played the radio loud to cover up the exhaust manifold leak noise.

I've been doing that for years...courtesy of my Uncle Sam and his M1A1 tanks and such...actually I recently sold the '55 to a gentelman older than me...I don't think he could hear the exhaust leak, even though I told him it was there...or he didn't care...?

An old mechanics trick was to take a short piece of garden hose and put to your ear then down by the exhaust and you will find the leak I am also in agreement with the guy below that you will have to Mill the manifolds flat again if it persists

If they blow out again, keep in mind that it doesn't cost that much to have a machine shop plane the manifolds so you have a flat sealing surface. Cast iron doesn't warp like header flanges often do, but it does happen. You can even check them somewhat with a straight edge.
@michaelcook7685 жыл бұрын
A gasket would solve any deflection in the head, with a straight manifold. A header gasket, while being thicker, works well too.

You can use trans fluid through carb and the smoke will reveal where the leaks are. Also can wrap manifold bolts with teflon tape to help insulate with harmonic vibrations which can cause bolts to back out.

There is a lock washer that is used under the head of socket head capscrews. It is small in diameter and should not show from under the bolt head keeping your stock look. Castiron manifolds are famous for twisting and warping, So give them a good look over with a straight edge.

my '58 Fleetwood had gasket leaks too, esp at the #1 cylinder...sounded like a bad rocker arm on the freeway. debated whether to use gaskets again, but since I didn't want to pull the manifolds this time around to get them planed, I went with the gaskets. the '58 does not have quite the same amount of stuff on the drivers side as your '56, but still hard to get at the bolts...they sure angle towards the ground, and the crossmember blocks access from below. the car does not have the resonators on it now...I love the rumble, but it kinda makes it sound like a not-Cadillac. Yours is pretty quiet and dignified!

Trick to keep nuts or bolts tight. I guess it's like using lock-tight, maybe better? I owned a '79 Caddy 425ci, one day luckily close to home I got a loud clanking noise from the engine and went way down in power like I lost half the motor. I nursed it home slowly. Sounded horrible like it threw a rod! Realized the noise was under the valve cover. Pulled the cover off to see two rocker arms laying sideways and the push rods were banging against the inside top of the valve cover by the marks left on the inside of the cover (that was the horrible noise). Put the one nut that held the pair down back in place (no lock washers on any of them). Tightened it up a lot, took it for a drive, in a mile or two same thing happened. Pulled it apart again added a lock washer to the one, made it extra tight. Took it for a drive, same thing happened again! I did notice there was gooey stuff on the threads of the stud. But I assumed it was just dried oil sludge (as there was some sludge everywhere else on the head). Luckily was able to speak to a Caddy tech on the phone at the dealer. He told me from the factory they coat those studs with brown type form-a-gasket so they won't losen up! Told me to do that and give it 12 hours to dry before starting the engine. He was right! It never came lose again, no lock washers! Might want to give that a try in the future, coat the threads and stick it in. I also noticed it stops the threads from rusting up and seazing, on other things I have since used it on!!!

@stevehill46155 жыл бұрын
dunno if this would help but if the manifold bolts keep loosening it maybe as a first option wise to change the bolts as they may have gone "soft"with age and thermal cycles and also the threads may be worn, if you do decide to replace the bolts if possible try to get some serrated flange locking bolts (in the engine plant where i worked they went by the trade name of Durlok, definitely metric sizes available but not sure on other thread forms) which will lock in place but still allow you to use some anti seizing compound on the threads (we used Fuchs PBC (polybutylcuprisol) but i'm sure others work).

A quick fix..... use high temp rtv..... I got tired of replacing the gaskets on my headers and a old racer taught me that trick.... I’ve never had a problem since then with leaky headers.... just throwing my two cents in.... take it or leave it..... I like your vids!!....
@saranpaafamily5 жыл бұрын
Remove manifolds and have them surfaced at a machine shop. Then when you go to install them, apply a thin smear of high temperature RTV red silicone. For headers, use only copper gaskets with a thin smear of high temperature RTV red silicone. On cast manifolds the bolts don’t require lock washers if they are used. Lock tab washers underneath the head of the bolts can be obtained for new bolts.

I have found that Exhaust manifold bolts tend to stretch, I never reuse them anymore. Put new bolts in unless it's 100% original show car, and you will have fewer leaks in the future. Thats just me though. sounds much better after the gaskets though.

Love that caddy!
@wackowacko89315 жыл бұрын
If you want to run without gaskets, you have to have both the head exhaust flange and the exhaust manifold resurfaced so they are both flat. This is the reason that they were able to run without gaskets from the factory, because both surfaces were flat enough to not need gaskets. Over time (and especially if there are gasket leaks - gasket leaks corrode the surfaces) the surfaces degrade so that they don't allow a perfect seal when bolted together without gaskets.
@andrewkiwi15 жыл бұрын
You will probably find that the manifold is worn or warped which means you have to take it off and get it planed. Give them a couple of weeks and recheck them. Nice old caddy.

@vettekid33265 жыл бұрын
With exhaust gaskets all your trying to do is compensate for an out of flat fit between the manifolds and the heads that's why when taking loose exhaust manifolds they have a tendency to warp from the accumulated hot / cold cycles and should be resurfaced to true them up before re-installing.
@goneshootin615 жыл бұрын
You should re torque the bolts after the engine has cooled down that should help from backing out .
